--THE GIG ITSELF STARTS AT 6:00 IN THE VIDEO.--
Here's the link to part one! • Cedar Cliff High Schoo...
Apologies for the mic noise in the first 5 minutes. Premiere (of course) for some reason didn't apply the noise reduction while rendering the video.
This is the 2nd part to our Cedar Cliff High School Homecoming 2014 gig log! In this video, you see the gig itself, and then clean up. There's not as much behind-the-scenes-stuff in this video, there's more of that in part one.
As usual, this was a gig for our former high school, Cedar Cliff. So of course it's a big setup. We do lots of really big stuff for Cedar Cliff... They're cool. That's why you see so many Cedar Cliff gig logs on our channel.
Also, in the video, we don't go into detail about what gear we use. Here's an equipment list:
Sound:
4 - JBL 4873 (tops) [rented]
4 - JBL SR4719X (subs) [rented]
4 - EV ZLX-12P (2 monitors, 2 front fills)
7 - QSC PLX3402 amplifiers (5 in use) [rented]
Ashley Crossover and Limiter [rented]
Behringer ULTRAGRAPH PRO FBQ3102 EQ (system EQ)
Behringer XENYX 802
Shure PGXD24/Beta58A [rented]
Lighting, Trussing & Staging:
6 - Chauvet Intimidator Spot 350 LED [4 rented, 2 owned]
6 - LuxFixtures LUXWash LED [rented]
4 - Chauvet COLORband PiX-M [owned]
24 - Chauvet SlimPar 38 [owned]
2 - American DJ Haze Generator [owned]
3 - 4'x8' pieces of Wenger Versalite Staging with 24" risers [rented]
10 - 8'6" Bike Rack Crowd Barriers [rented]
2 - SQ-4115 F34 Global Truss [owned]
2 - DT-PRO4000 [owned]
We use Chauvet Show Express with an Xpress 512 and an AKAI APC Mini to control the lights.
We're not going to put a track list of all the random songs heard in this video in the description and we're not going to give it to you, so don't bother asking. If you want to know what a specific song is, check to see if it's already been asked in the comments. If it hasn't, then ask and we'll most likely get back to you.
As usual, we don't take credit for any of the songs heard in this video. All rights for all songs go to their respective owners.
We're equipment dealers for 200+ brands!

Mad respect guys. As a DJ in college, I have the fortunate upside of tons of people liking EDM. I know that feel as a high school DJ, because the lack of people, but you guys went off and made an incredible light show to the audience there. The effort of production that goes into every gig you get is incredible. If I had a chance to collaborate with you guys, I would honestly take up that opportunity. Keep it up guys.

now that you know more about lights and stuff... i'm trying to start building my own like lighting set up, I really like the one you got here, what should i invest on first? i was thinking the 24 Chauvet SlimPar 38 but id appreciate your opinion

Invest in whatever lights you will use at most of your events. For this example, if you're going to use slim pars at all of your events, get them. If you would use colorbars or 350s more often, get those instead.

Wow. This is one of the best gig log videos I have ever seen. You guys are awesome. I see that you used the ADJ haze generators, and I was wondering if you've ever had a problem with fire alarms or clients not wanting you to use haze or fog. I'm looking in to purchasing a haze machine and was wondering how often you ran into problems with them. Thanks.
@SLMEntertainment
@SLMEntertainment 9 жыл бұрын
Isaac Parks Thanks! We haven't had a problem with fire alarms with these haze machines yet, but there have been plenty of times when a client doesn't want to use fog either because the fire system doesn't allow it, or because they think a fire system that can't be triggered by fog still will somehow be triggered by it.

You guys are great! My brother in law and I are attempting to start up our own thing. We've been sound techs and musicians for a long time so we're not totally green to some of this. I don't feel so bad now that 2 of us show up to gigs instead of 1 guy. I have my job and he has his. Anyway, one of my big questions is, what did you guys do to start getting gigs in the beginning? Right now, we've mainly done this for people we know and by word of mouth, but we'd like to go farther.

Cool setup, it looks amazing! Is the Xpress 512 with ShowXpress and AKAI APC Mini easy to configure and use on a Windows 7 laptop? We're doing a fairly large UK NYE party and we will be using DMX lighting only. We currently use the KAM Standalone DMX Controller with Chromateq software which I hate, so looking to replace it with the Xpress 512, or maybe even ADJ MyDMX 2.0, then link up either the AKAI APC Mini or the Novation LaunchPad. We're struggling to decide which way to go and would appreciate your input. Also, what's the song at 21.03? Thanks!
@SLMEntertainment
@SLMEntertainment 10 жыл бұрын
Yeah its pretty easy. I've never used ADJ, but I'm real comfortable with show express. If you're going to be using more Chauvet fixtures, go with show express. If you're going to be using more ADJ fixtures, go with them. We use basically only Chauvet. Also, the song is: Elènne - Ruthless Bloom
@kmw365
@kmw365 10 жыл бұрын
SLM Entertainment Many thanks for your advice and the song ID. We have a mixture of fixtures from Chauvet, ADJ and Acme. Anyway, We've gone for the Xpress 512 and AKAI APC Mini. It appears the ADJ MyDMX 2.0 is too basic and lacks features.

Nice gig log, just a few tips maybe, even thought my setup is way smaller: - dj booth seems very low, like u guys bending to touch the controller and so. -those 2 stage lights in front of yor faces.. idk how bright in real life they are but maybe placig them on top of you would hurt less your eyes cos my pars that close and facing my face would hurt as hell(maybe u got them dimmed idk) - dancefloor fills a bit dark most of the times, before the gig started with all white it seemed like pars were only pointing down in front of you... feels like with moving heads later light was bouncing around and filling a bit more.. - thought of doing rgb matrix with those bars? Would be a nice effect of filling or bouncing or so Said that, new subscriber, loved your log

How many different DMX addresses did you use for the Slimpars?
@SLMEntertainment
@SLMEntertainment 9 жыл бұрын
Not really sure what you're asking. There's 24 slimpars, and they each are assigned seperate channels, therefore we used 24 different channels. I think you're asking how many channels they all took up collectively out of the 512. Each slimpar uses 7 dmx channels, and we had 24. If you do the math, it ended up taking 162 channels for all the slimpars.

W bins? What are you talking about? We didn't use any W bins. The subs we used, as listed in the description, were JBL SR4719X front loaded, bass reflex, dual 18" subs. We were using 5-6 20A 120V circuits close to their full potential. And not really, the music really wasn't all that loud. It especially was nowhere near concert levels.

TimmeH Gone Riden Ohh, those lol. They're poop, like just crap. They're Peavey FH2's. They only go down to 60hz, are super heavey, and aren't very loud. I've been watching so many of your videos, all the way through, I enjoy watching the set up and the gig. So, one question, how much have you spent on these gigs, it must be thousands! Living in the UK, we don't have these kind of parties over here, it kinda sucks, but your gigs are always successful, they look like great, exhausting fun! How old are you guys? When did you start? There are so many questions, but I am truly impressed, your gigs would definitely become a huge hit at larger parties than high schools and proms, I would think you could go into adult parties, such as New Year or Christmas in large communities/cities! You would be very successful! I wish the best of luck to you all! Aaron

Fantastic setup! Some really nice programming there lighting wise, some audience blinders would be good for your rig, showtec sunstrips or some standard molefays, would add a nice bit of tungsten look to your show to give it bit of contrast, plus on drops and stuff in songs to give a really big impact couple blinders would be epic
@SLMEntertainment
@SLMEntertainment 9 жыл бұрын
Totally agree, but those Showtec fixtures use a ton of power, and are 230V only. We never have access to that voltage, and in general at these types of events we're very short on power. So we probably won't be getting any of those until we have ample amounts of power.
@lifeboats1
@lifeboats1 9 жыл бұрын
SLM Entertainment Yeah that is very true, I've got sunstrips sadly limited to how much I can take them out due to power, they are LED versions available however don't get as much as a punch from them however still quite bright!! are you getting anymore fixtures for your rig?

Christian Gibbard We'd like to upgrade to the 355z, and move away from the 350s. We'd also like to get some 350 washes, and maybe some dedicated strobes. As long as we're doing "mobile" gigs, I'm really comfortable with out inventory. If we were to start doing small concerts, then I would want to upgrade either to some gear form Chauvet Professional, Robe, or Elation.
@dougberry4674
@dougberry4674 9 жыл бұрын
Christian Gibbard I would say that 350s can comfortable handle things around the size of 500 people in a hotel ballroom. The event in this video, 750 people in a high school gym, is really the absolute max for them and I would have much preferred having the 355zs instead for this event.

+Mike Lipinski LOVE THEM. Wish they made a version with RGBW, or RGBAW, or hex! I also really like the effect from ADJ Sweeper Beams, but I find them less reliable and less versatile. It would be cool if someone made a colorbar with tilt which could switch back and forth between beam and wash optics, and also used RGBAW-UV LEDs.

You should invest in a proper lighting console like a Chamsys mq40 or a mq60, makes programming so much easier.
@SLMEntertainment
@SLMEntertainment 9 жыл бұрын
Yea but those are really expensive, and we're already pretty comfortable with our current workflow. Plus we'd much rather put that money towards something more lights or new and bigger speakers so we don't have to rent for big gigs.
@RyanMakesLight
@RyanMakesLight 9 жыл бұрын
SLM Entertainment Even if you dont want to buy a full console you should try chamsys' software, it is amazing. you can get a limited dongle for only $15. Pair it with a touch screen and you will be surprised how much easier programming becomes.
@SLMEntertainment
@SLMEntertainment 9 жыл бұрын
Tech_Geek97 We'll look into it, but the thing is we already bought a $500 dongle for ShowXpress, and we can't use it with other software. So until we outgrow this software, we'll probably be sticking with it.
@RyanMakesLight

That's cool. I am not trying to call ShowXpress bad per se, just letting you know that there are more powerful options. Though a touchscreen would probably make programming with Xpress easier too.

Pass on Showcad, and pass on midi keyboard. I don't know enough about Showcad to say if it is or isn't the club standard, but I know that a midi keyboard is not. There isn't really a club standard for midi controllers for lighting. The Akai APC products are probably the most popular, but I really like LividInstruments.

@SLMEntertainment
@SLMEntertainment 10 жыл бұрын
People tell us that a lot, and our response is very similar to when someone tells us to get CDJ's. They're not really worth it as they're not versatile at all, and we could put that money towards something else that is much higher on our "need to buy" list. Such as speakers big enough to handle a homecoming without renting, or more lighting, or a whole ton of things. Not to mention lasers are really dangerous, and you need special permits and stuff to even use the nice ones. That fact alone would leave a terrible taste in the mouth of our clients, with them thinking we would bring lasers into a school that could potentially blind the kids. It's just not gonna happen, lol.
@bumlover1167
@bumlover1167 10 жыл бұрын
Fair enough lol and I think those EV's would do just fine holding a homecoming :)
@SLMEntertainment
@SLMEntertainment 10 жыл бұрын
Daniel Graves Lol, not for our homecomings. For stuff like this where we want it to be as close to a concert as possible, we like to go as loud as we practically can. ZLX's would just be complete poop for a homecoming. There would be no midrange punch further than like 15 feet away, and they would be nowhere near loud enough. IMO, those JBL stacks weren't even that loud. We're currently looking into the ETX-35P for tops, and hopefully those are loud enough. When we invest in big speakers, we wanna buy something that we can use if we do a party that isn't affiliated with a school and we can start to approach real concert sound levels.

everything looks great, my only suggestion for the controllers is to get coffins. I have used CDJ's and an assortment of controllers, controllers are great and i won't go back to cdj's besides clubs which have them, but coffins for the controllers are a necessity in the mobile dj business. Well worth the investment. but like you said in the comments below, it may not be in your best interest just yet but in the near future definitely.
@SLMEntertainment
@SLMEntertainment 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks! And what, you mean like a flight case? We have one for one of our controllers for transportation, but quite frankly, we hate the way they look as a platform. We think it looks WAY cleaner having the controller and the laptop just on the table by themselves. Otherwise leaving the controller in the case while using it, in our opinion, gives you a very tacky, typical mobile DJ look.
@Bsuth72
@Bsuth72 10 жыл бұрын
I see where you are coming from. I use mine to hide the wires coming out of the back and to hide the rest of the wires. I actually have a flight case but i took the laptop stand off and use my old stanton laptop stand that slides between the top of the case and the actual controller part. I recently have been using my cdj's more often which i use the case for most definitely. most of my gigs are a micro setup (top system, 2 top speakers and 1-2 subs), so having the ability to setup in 10 and tear down in 5 because of the ability to already have the cables plugged into the back of my djm-900 really makes it helpful. everyone has their own ways to setup, and preferred ways. I love the way the cases look whether they are generic or not. Goodluck on the business growth, hope to see more from you guys.

SLM Entertainment controllers sux ass (in my opinion) gimmi my 2000s n 900nxs all day. i did the controller ting for a while cos it was easier to grab trax on the fly, but youll find ya self falling into the trap of mixen useing the visual cues more then actule audio. and lets be honest software never gets the beatgrids wright. and software crashes. at the end of the day your either in it for the tune or the fame...
@SLMEntertainment
@SLMEntertainment 10 жыл бұрын
TimmeH Gone Riden We've been pretty lucky with software for the most part. No crashes, and only very very rare situations where the beatgrid was incorrect. To be fair, there are a few decent controllers out there. But yeah, basically 95% of them are all terrible. Still, we can't afford CDJs and really appreciate the mobility of a controller. Not sure what you mean about being in it for the tune or the fame, we just do this because it's fun. We're not pretending to be some master DJs like Qbert or A.M., that style of DJing has fallen out of popularity anyway. We DJ the same way someone like Zedd does these days, and we use sync often. These days, people just want to hear songs. If you're able to mix basic transitions, then they enjoy that too. Even live mashups are rare these days. People just play songs, and do basic transitions. If they have a mashup, it's almost certainly prerecorded. If you call that "not DJing" or "fake DJing", that's fine but it's totally your opinion. It's not up to us to decide if we're "real" DJs. We're just doing this to make it fun for the crowd, to make the client happy, and to have fun during the night ourselves as well as have fun while setting up/planning the production. For now, we can achieve our goals with the controllers we have, and we wouldn't be able to afford CDJs anyway.

You guys are right up there with the big boys...Arnoldo Offermann/Master School Dances, John Caniford/Strictly 4 Schools plus the other big KZbin DJ's..DJ Mikey Mike, DJ Briansredd, Paul Eddy/Magic light and Sound, Stewards Productions, DJ Mike Sanchez. Here's what I think can very inexpensively add a whole new professionalism to your show...Custom pro voice drops for each DJ..."your in the mix with dj(yada yada)...these are identical to the voice over artists that you would hear on KISS radio and can custom produced for as little as $27.each. Truss warmers/toners...this could add a whole new dimension to your light show, and be done very inexpensively. You should check out the, "Spaceship", by Briansredd here on youtube, and made out of GlobalTruss...something similar to that as the stage centerpiece would give you an edge over the competition. If you want something way over the top looking for a backdrop, but done on a bare bones budget, look at churchstagedesignideas.com, I know someone that had an incredible uplit structure made for both sides of their stage for $120. plus the cost of a few uplights. This combined with the truss warmers alone, can give you numerous different looks. Please, I encorage you to look through the entire site...you'll be amazed at how little it could cost you to make a BIG impact. Finally you should look into expanding through crowdsourcing and sponsorship...especially if you could pull off the above stuff and bring in maybe possibly 2 other investor DJs...to do a multiple DJ set, EDM style with the afforementioned stuff. Let me know what you think of this.

Lots of stuff brought up in this comment! I'll go through each point. 1: That's pretty crazy to be compared with those guys. While I don't agree with a lot of their style/ideas, there's no question that they're some pretty big names. So that's a serious compliment dude. 2: For the voice drops, we've worked with people who wanted to have us do them/do them for us. They're just not really our style, so we pass on them at our gigs. If we had some oddball event that wanted us to do that kind of thing, we'd look into it further. 3: Truss warming. For a long time, I (Doug) have wanted to do truss warming. I've basically abandoned the idea for two reasons. First, it only really looks cool on a huge truss structure. We don't do those thaaaat often, and when you have trussing like we did at this gig, truss warming isn't even that noticeable. Second reason, our cable management is terrible. Actually, I would just say that we don't even have cable management at all. We basically just throw all the loose cable inside the trussing. Nobody notices it during the show because of all the other bright lights making it hard to see the trussing in the first place. If we were to light up the insides of the trussing, all anyone would see would be a ridiculous nest of DMX and IEC cables. It wouldn't be truss warming, it would be loose cable warming. We don't want that hahahaha. 4: Dislike the spaceship. I've seen it, don't like it. Period. Too claustrophobic of a design in every aspect. Although, it would be cool to take that design and just stretch it out wider... 5: Crowd sourcing and sponsorship. This is a pretty complex topic, but the basic idea of why we're not doing it is because we like to have 100% control over our growth speed. Money is nice, but we didn't get into the mobile DJ industry to make money. Overall, those are my thoughts on your points. Feel free to add me on Facebook if you wanna talk more. And by the way, I'm not sure why your comment was marked as spam. Oh well.

Hmmmm... putting roughly $10,000 towards CDJs... or putting that same $10,000 towards lights and speakers... A lot of people tell us that we should get CDJs. We basically have the same response each time. We would rather use that money on other gear. Not to mention, setting up CDJs isn't worth any pennies. We all DJ just fine using controllers, and CDJs take up a lot of space + add setup time. Plus, the client isn't going to have a better event just because we got CDJs, but they would potentially have a better event if we had nicer speakers, or lights, or can setup faster.
