February 12th - 14th, Cedar Cliff High School had their 3rd annual Mini THON! We do lots of stuff for Cedar Cliff, and they're always pretty cool events that we make sure to film. That's why the majority of the gig logs on our channel are Cedar Cliff gigs.
Disclaimer about the rigging: The client hired a rigger separate from us to handle everything which would require a certification, especially the truss suspension. We consulted with them about our ideas, design, objectives, etc. Consultations were also made with an aerial construction specialist, a certified rigging company, two certified independent riggers, a structural engineer, and a mechanical engineer. Last year, the rigging was done very non-conventionally. This year, it is to my understanding that this is virtually as conventional as it gets in the major aspects. Feel free to ask questions or make comments, just know that we are not 100% knowledgeable about this subject and if your question or comment is too complex, we might not answer it. Also note that this video is not a tutorial. If you want to suspend truss at your events, do research, hire a rigger, get certified, etc etc, don't just base off of what was done in this video because there's still the chance that some of the things we did were specific to our production.
As for music during the gig, we don't have a track list for the entire night or a set list or anything like that, so don't bother asking us to give you that in the comments. If you want to know what a specific song is that you hear in the video, check first to see if it was already given somewhere else in the comments. If nobody asked about the song you want to know, then go ahead and make a comment asking for that song. Or try and use Shazam.
Also, in the video, we don't talk about what gear we use. However, there's a gear list in the description. If you have any questions about the equipment we used, feel free to ask us in the comments.
The intro song is Canon by Overwerk.

@SLMEntertainment
@SLMEntertainment 8 жыл бұрын
+A.E.L. Sound & Lighting We use a Canon 60D with the built in mic. And I'm not sure what you're listening to the video on, but the bass in the video is very full, although clear maybe not so much. I mean a full square wave (100% clipped signal) at 40hz doesn't even have 1 harmonic beneath 100hz, so even though the audio is clipped it shouldn't really affect the low frequencies.

Just a quick question. Iv watched a few of your gig logs and was wondering how come you never use anything else than PARs and moving heads. what about strobes and laser etc?
@dougberry4674
@dougberry4674 6 жыл бұрын
there's no reason to use more variety of things if it already looks good. the fewer different kinds of fixtures, the easier it is to work with. fyi, we have strobe-like fixtures on this rig. they're not literally "strobes", but if they're bright like strobes, and they do the same thing as strobes, then there ya go the reason we don't use real strobes is because of electricity requirements the reason we don't use lasers is because we don't have any (yet) and there aren't any to rent in the area

I am guessing you used a massive dmx cable to connect lights to Dylan in control box? And also why don't you use wireless dmx?
@dougberry4674
@dougberry4674 8 жыл бұрын
+Josh Spehar yep, we had two universes so we used two 250ft dmx cables. we use as little wireless as possible just because it causes more issues for us than wiring

AWESOME!!! That light-show looks fantastic 😘 I love the diamond and the idea with the uplit drapes in the background. the only "bad" thing I noticed is, that you should black out those status-leds on the lights on the diamond with electrical tape or something...
@dougberry4674
@dougberry4674 8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Goldmann Yaaaa you're the first one to point it out in the comments! After we put the diamond up, we immediately were all like "Damn, should have taped those off." But it was too late... :( Fortunately, it's only noticeable when the room is blacked out. When there are lights on, you couldn't really see the status LEDs that well anyway, so it wasn't tooooo big of a deal. Still a bummer and real frustrating to look at, especially because it's such an easy fix that we just didn't have time for.
@michaelgoldmann3734
@michaelgoldmann3734 8 жыл бұрын
+Doug Berry it's not that huge of a deal 😄 the rest of the lights balanced out that little issue ;) how long did it take you to program all of this? and how many channels did you use?
@dougberry4674
@dougberry4674 8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Goldmann Took around 10 - 12 hours total, the chases with the slimpars alone took like 5 hours because I have to make them manually. I can get fine results with showxpress, but it takes forever to get the show to a point that I'm satisfied with. Two universes. took up 1014 channels. I wanted to run the pix-ms on 42 channel mode so they could be pixel mapped, but that would have increased our channel count to 1398 and I wasn't confident in my ability to find a third showxpress dongle in time. Also would have added probably an hour or two to programming time.

+Doug Berry that's an awful lot of dmx channels 😵 "I can get fine results..." does that mean you would rather recommend an other interface/lighting desk? excuse me if it is too much to ask, but how much did you charge for the gig? I don't think, that all this rented gear is that affordable. you can pn me if that makes you feel more confident :) thanks ^^

How do you guys set the volume? Are you slightly increasing it during the gig? Just like most party's?
@alexberry3833
@alexberry3833 8 жыл бұрын
+TheGamesBond-007 Kind of, although not really. For homecomings and other normal events or concerts my answer would be yes to increasing the volume over time, but for this event because it was so long, I did it differently. This is kind of weird to explain, but if you take the floor space between the crowd barriers and the wall of the room with the doors that people enter into the gym, divide it into thirds, and think of where the dividing line would be between the first and second sections, around that point is generally where I would aim for around 100dBA for the majority of the dancing sessions. I chose that point because that's generally where the center of the crowds of people were. That's about the lowest you can comfortably go in a school gym at that distance and still have the rest of the gym sounding good and not having the crowd noise overpowering the music. During the dancing session after the rave I had the volume louder than that, probably around I'd say 103dBA, but for almost all of the dancing parts it was around 100dBA at around that specified distance. I didn't want it to be too loud for those long dancing stretches, because that would eventually just turn into the music being obnoxious over time. However for the rave, at that same previously specified distance, I ran the system at around 105-107dBA. The rave was only for 30 mins, and the rave is pretty much the only part of the night that's really supposed to be really loud. Even at that volume though, nothing was painful, it sounded amazing (IMO), and the music just fully enveloped you. It was like a nice, warm cocoon of music, which is exactly what you want for something like a "rave".

@thegamesbond-0073 8 жыл бұрын
+Alex Berry Thanks for the explanation! I often think that music on party's is comfortable in the beginning, when it sounds the best and isn't to loud. I also agree that it shouldn't be turned up to much throughout the evening. (Wich they do a lot in party's here in Belgium) Music should be nice to listen to, and I think that you guys have everything covered and are doing a very nice job! Although I think it's not that healthy to sit in front of a sub array like that ;)
@alexberry3833
@alexberry3833 8 жыл бұрын
No problem, and thanks for the compliment! I work really hard to do the best job I can with the sound at our events and it's nice when other people can appreciate it! For your average 3 hour dance however, we usually do turn up the volume gradually throughout the night. I'll usually do a 5dB or so increase from the start of the event to the end. Starting with around 98-100dBA somewhere towards the center of the crowd area, and ending with around 103-105dBA for the last 30mins or so. I'll also NEVER push the front row (rail riding) past 110dBA, and I've been to shows at clubs where the front row ends up WELL beyond that towards the end of the night. Even with the volume increase I normally do, it never gets excessive IMO, because I normally don't like it when it's just excessive and painful. As for sitting in front of the sub array, bass actually doesn't really cause much hearing damage. I've never sat in a REALLY loud car or in front of a sub array with 150+db of bass and gone away with my ears ringing. The only time my ears ring is when the mid/high's are too loud, or the speakers are scratchy as hell in the 2khz region. And bass doesn't generally do any physical harm until you're up above 170db.

+SLM Entertainment why don't you use line-array speakers?
@SLMEntertainment
@SLMEntertainment 8 жыл бұрын
+dj costumize Because we don't like line arrays. But beyond that, we already own Danley SM80s which are WAY more than enough mid/high for this venue, line array rentals are really expensive, they don't sound as good as our SM80s, they weigh too much, take too much power, and don't provide any benefits over the SM80s. The only thing that line arrays have over our SM80s is variable vertical coverage, but they lose out in every other category.

@dougberry4674 8 жыл бұрын
+DecGames nothing happened, we were never "partnered". they hire us for gigs sometimes when they need us to run a production, or bring us on as extra crew if needed for like a busy weekend of theirs, etc etc. they hired us to do all the productions for their proms last year, and alex and i worked as crew for some weddings of theirs during the summer, but they have like 20+ employees so they only really need us during their busiest months or if they want some extra production work done. last year was a weird situation for us because we didn't have any proms of our own, but that's complicated. this year, we do have our own proms again like normal, but we unfortunately only have time to work with klock on one of their proms, not all of them like last year. stay tuned!
