After James Young rode the Raptor Roller Coaster at Cedar Point he made a momentary bad decision that would cost him his life. The incident highlighted the need to follow park safety rules and always be aware of one's surroundings.

I’m not denying it’s tragic or trying to say he deserved it or anything, but scaling two fences marked “danger” under an active rollercoaster is not a “lapse in judgement” it’s a series of intentional, yet terrible, choices he made actively ignoring danger warnings he had to know was there for a reason. It’s awful what happened, and we’ve all made dumb choices, but a momentary lapse in judgement is more akin to letting go of a safety railing or leaning over something a little too far, not scaling two fences

Roller coasters are loud as hell as is but I’ve been going to Cedar Point for years and Raptor has developed a bit of a reputation for being especially loud. Idk if that’s a B&M invert thing or a Raptor thing, but Raptor is by far the loudest roller coaster in the park. You hear it roar when you walk through the midway and you know exactly which ride it is.

At some point they started filling the track and supports with sand, which caused the rides to run quieter. I'm glad they haven't retrofitted Raptor though, it's roar is iconic.

He was told that for safety reasons he shouldn't have his phone on him, and for why he would have to wait until the end of the day. He then disregarded that information, climbed the fence and was struck. He knew what he was doing was unsafe, the ride operators literally told him it was unsafe to climb the fence and head into the ride area. Blaming it on the height of the fence is ridiculous when he was already told the area was unsafe. Also Rollercoasters are loud af, unless it was at a point that it whipped around particularly fast how could he not be that aware of his surroundings? This was a guy about to work in a school...words mean things... It sucks it happened, I just feel his dad's words are really stretching it.

For those of you that dont know, the raptor is loud. And I mean REALLY LOUD, at least when you're not on it. If you're in the vicinity, you can hear it. Ive heard it been called "the dinosaur" even though its technically based on the aviary term raptor, but i just want those of you who havent rode it to get a good idea of what its like. How could you not hear it coming? Screaming, the roar of the coaster, the sounds the riding train makes? And to say "the fence shouldn't be so easy to climb over." WHAT DO YOU MEAN?!?! There was sinage, there were two fences. The staff told you to wait, you didn't, and it cost you your life based on poor decisions. You're an adult who decided that your phone and wallet, which would have been safe inside the fence, meant more than your life. Cedar point is super strict about not going over the fence, and if you get caught I think you're banned from the park for a while. They're even more strict about phones and such on coasters to avoid this type of problem. I have sympathy, but stupidity kills.

I'd never enter a restricted area beneath a roller coaster track because I don't want to be decapitated, but if I did I wouldn't rely on sound as a warning. I'd figure out the frequency of the trains passing the point I needed to access and time my foolishness based on observational data. You know, do the dumb thing the smart way.

I'm like super sympathetic and stuff but yeah every point that this person makes is so true and to top it off this person was just hired to work their dream job of being a guidance counselor and then makes the poorest decision of his entire life.. a guidance counselor. I'm sorry, its awful he died but someone who can make that decision, especially sober, should NEVER be a guidance counselor. I've been to cedar point and am going back just next week. Those fences are high enough. You can't simply hip hop in and out in a couple seconds. It would probably take a good few to get over each. Even so, people forget this guy was 45. He wasn't old enough for his brain to be failing him and he was more than old enough to know better.

There's literally a fence there. If you went through the effort to jump it, which isn't easy for most Americans then it's your fault not the fence height. Imagine someone opening a door on a plane and jumping out dying then blaming it on the door.

While it’s tragic that someone died, the blame falls solely on the victim. The amusement park did everything right here and bears no blame in this accident. People need to take responsibility for their own actions. The surviving family has no right to blame the amusement park for this incident. This incident would be slightly more understandable if the victim was an immature and impulsive child or teenager and not a grown, middle-aged man who ironically wanted to be a guidance counselor to teenagers.

He knew the risk when climbing the fence. When a ride op tells you they can't get your stuff until the end of the day, that means it is not safe for a person to go into the track area until the end of the day. Many people don't realize the protocols we have to go through in order to enter the track area, and even then we're usually only limited to the catwalks. So for a guest who 1) has not followed those protocols, and 2) does not know the ride as well as a ride operator does, to go deliberately go into the track area despite warning signs as well as ignoring staff, is it 100% his fault and nobody else's.

Or wait until the ride is down, as it is with almost every roller coaster at some point every day when Cedar Point is operating... and when the ride is "Delayed due to maintenance" then that's the time you can ask them to retrieve your phone and wallet early

The main point is I worked at cedar point this season and yes depending on what they say we can usually retrieve it during the day when we're open if our managers let us so we would cycle out empty then closed down temporarily then retrieve the item problem solved I get some people can't wait but I agree with the comments it's not worth your life and the one girls phone we got her back was an iPhone 15 I think let's see it's smashed but hey she's still alive she can replace her phone but if she died jumping the fence like these people over an iPhone not worth it and I thanked her for asking us to get it for her

I was in the park the day this happened. The man had lost his phone. He scaled at least one fence to get it. When you look at the coaster tracks, it appears you would have enough room to walk under it, but you don’t- because the coaster is inverted. I’m not finding any excuses for him, and scaling any fence where it clearly is marked danger us of course wrong thing to do, I’m just trying to explain why he might have done it. Very sad story.

Yes they do that I was getting trained on blue streak and we asked a lady to put her phone away more than twice and she didn't so we stopped it on the lift and we took it from her and handed it to security and we keep doing that to this day

@@monarchmeow9256 The Raptor has different bins at the station for each train which is secured by an employee until the matching train returns. This is true for many of their other rides, and not just the coasters. Your phone, shades and even wallet or purse are far safer in the bin than on your person. Also, lockers at CP are everywhere and, as of my last visit 2 yrs ago, were rented by time so you could reopen it as much as you'd like. There really aren't any valid excuses for guests like our "victim" here. If someone is too cheap to rent a locker AND too afraid to use the free bins, they need therapy to get over their sociopathic tendencies or risk losing their head.

A similar accident happened this year in the famous Vienna Prater amusement park in Vienna/Austria. A young woman, an employee (!), went to recover a smartphone a passenger just lost during the ride, and get hit by the same kind of roller coaster like this and was killed instantly. You can train people, write warnings on signs, but sometimes the brain of a person seem to stop working for a moment and than such misjudgments can happen. It can happen to everyone. So always watch out and think twice if this is a good idea before doing ist.

Thank you for pointing out that the victim in this instance isn't innocent in this incident. There have been a few channels who've treated these kinds of tragedies as though the park itself was entirely to blame instead of acknowledging the victim's agency or autonomy.

@@doesntmatter4477 car accidents aren’t a result of stupidity all the time…they certainly can be, but they’re largely caused by the fact that cars are metal death machines travelling at extremely high speeds that we get in as casually as getting out of bed because they’re necessary for modern life, they’re inherently unsafe. Telling yourself all accidents are only a result of stupidity is pure self delusion in an attempt to deny your own susceptibility to these kinds of accidents. Humans are weak and fragile, and every second we’re alive we risk ending up in an accident which could do us serious damage or kill us, it’s a fact of life that more people need to face. It’s hard, but it’s a lot easier than going out of your way to desperately attempt morally high ground everyone who ever gets into a fatal accident.

I remember riding the Raptor shortly after it first opened. There are a couple places where my feet were only a few feet from the ground. People's feet would be pretty hard to avoid if you were down there. So even if he ducked, he still would have been struck by the train. It is a tragedy, but it's hard to claim negligence on Cedar Point's part when you scale two fences marked with warning signs.

Regarding the no loose items (no glasses, phones, jewlery, etc) I was at Canada's wonderland a couple weeks ago and on (I believe its biggest) Coaster "Behemoth" shortly after the coaster reached the crest of its first and biggest drop, someones phone went flying over head as the coaster dropped nearly vertically. Probably got ripped out of someones hand by the wind.

I was there that day and saw the body. I was waiting in the back of the line for The Wicked Twister and I noticed police headed toward The Raptor. Instinctively, I went out of the line and ran toward where they were going. I looked through through the fence and saw his body. I also was greatly shaken because I remember seeing him eating lunch two picnic tables down from us earlier in the day at a chicken restaurant. Everybody was shaken. It was devastating to see someone who died like this. May he rest in peace.

Just went to Cedar Point yesterday, the Raptor was the first roller coaster I’ve ever ridden in my life, there is obviously sympathy I feel for this man, but when people say you can hear this ride coming from a hell of a far away distance they aren’t lying, this guys death was entirely his fault and his stupidly allowed him to value his phone over his own life, and it killed him, it’s sad, but I find it hard to feel bad for him

I don't know if it's feasible but if you don't want to use a taller fence, then go with one you wanna use but also dig an eight foot deep ditch around the outside of it with the vertical side being where the fence is and leave the other side on a 45 degree angle so at least that way if you fall into the ditch, you roll safely down into it on a 45 degree angle.

I live in Sandusky and have my whole life. I’m about 4 blocks from the lake. You can hear the coasters, people screaming on the rides, and the train whistle across the lake. There’s no mistaking the sound of the coaster. It’s horrible the guy lost his life. I wish people would pause and think their next step through before trying a stunt like that. There are fences around all of the coasters with plenty of danger signs. People will do things no matter how many warnings they get because they assume “it will never be me”.

Actions have consequences. We as a society have been moving away from accepting this and instead are often looking for someone else to blame. There is no scenario where someone is perfectly safe. You are always in danger of something. Instead of looking for someone else to blame more people need to hold themselves accountable.

now if you have your phone out on a ride at cedar point and they see it they will immediately stop the ride and you will be removed from the ride and the park. I watched it happen to a lady on the magnum. They stopped the ride on the incline and then made the decision to let the riders finish, but then security guards escorted the lady off the ride when it ended. I’m glad they do this because it saves lives.

It's been years since I've been to Cedar Point, and would like to go maybe next year to ride Steel Vengeance (it was still Mean Streak when I last went). Even though it has been years since I went there are always two things I make sure of before I go. First is to have a strap for my glasses as not all rides are going to have bins to place loose articles. Second is to wear cargo shorts with pockets that zip up to secure any loose articles. If something is lost and they tell me to wait until the ride closes, then I am waiting until the ride closes. I am not going to climb a fence that has a danger sign on it no matter the height of the fence.

As someone who loves this coaster and worked front gate during the incident, it is freaking LOUD! It's one of the loudest, if not, the loudest, coaster in the park. There is no way he couldn't hear how close it was and how much power that thing had. Thank goodness there were only testing dummies on it, or I'd feel terrible for the poor people who would have rode front. And the poor James family... I hope they were able to tell their kids not to be like him. Items are replaceable. Your life is not.

I hate to be that guy but if he REALLY needed his stuff that badly why would he climb the section of the fence where you can clearly see the track over passes??? In most of these cases its just people not using basic common sense that get killed in these situations. That's outside the fact he didn't follow the "no loose items" on the ride signs which is why he lost his items in the first place, or the fence warning signs clearly showing that area was a potential danger zone. You would think a grown adult would understand the dangers/risks of entering a restricted area and when deciding to not listen to the warning sign would exercise caution and understand that a FAST moving metal object passes by the immediate vicinity nearby and over the fence, that he would want to maybe assure he was not anywhere close enough to said metal object when crossing the fence to retrieve his things.

I forgot to stow my phone at Cedar Point once, and lost it. You know what I did? I waited until closing time. I was annoyed, I was irritated, I was frankly furious with myself. But I knew better than to climb a fence covered with warnings. I apologized to staff for the inconvenience when they returned my broken phone, and learned a valuable lesson. Sad as his story is, he had to know better.

Wonder if there was a lawsuit and settlement as with most (all?) other cases. I really hate our overly litigious society. We sue over everything, for ridiculous amounts and juries are quick to hand out the verdicts because they think the same way. Either that or it's a settlement because it's easier and cheaper than fighting in court.

Definitely not besides it being common sense defenses had warnings on them and was at the required height limits that is required by law not to mention he was an adult and was even told no, and told that it wasn’t safe by staff and still chose to do it anyways literally 100% unequivocally his own fault he pay the ultimate price sucks he died but I don’t feel bad. I believe they attempted. I seem to remember hearing about a statement from the family’s lawyer that CP was at fault because the victim could see his property and that they should have privacy type fences because “out of sight, out of mind” 🤦‍♀️

See this one is almost more understandable than the Banshee incident because this was presumably not towards the end of the work day, and his wallet was also lost, so there wasn’t any way for him to spend the time. But then, the solution is you go find a desk worker, bug them about making a phone call, citing your lost phone and wallet as a reason you can’t get a pay phone or call yourself, be patient, and call someone to go pick you up or accompany you for the day. I even understand the temptation when you can literally see your items laying there, and to the layman it seems to easy to just run over quick to grab it. But many people don’t seem to understand that this isn’t about timing. Going in the lockdown zone while a coaster is active is like playing Frogger in high traffic with a semi headed your way. The inverted coasters are even more dangerous as clearly demonstrated, but even the normal upright coasters are dangerous to be around while operating.

Depending on the ride, the place I work at is similar. They'll typically tell an operator, the operator makes a call and then a maintance guy or a manager retrieves the item if visible.

There are so many dumb mistakes here. Don’t bring your phone on a ride that goes upside down 6 times. And then don’t hop over 2 fences to get it. And if you’re going to go that far, at least be careful enough to not get hit by a train. You’ll get kicked out but you won’t die. I don’t understand how he couldn’t see or hear the ride coming. Anybody who’s ever been to Cedar Point knows just exactly how Raptor is. Roller coasters are loud but but you can hear Raptor clearly over everything else. It’s obviously sad that this happened but it’s just so stupidly avoidable

this is terrible accident and tragedy, my condolences to any families who have suffered the same, but that being said it is the consensus that this will usually always end up getting you killed, it is these unfortunate situations which stain the parks reputation and can damage/shame rollercoasters and rides alike, in most cases a true coaster or ride death that is not human error is far far more rare than most would think. its sad but a lot of people will write a ride, park, or company off for situations like this. i hope the industry can with the public work on these issues of safety and human behavior. maybe barb wire up? on the fences? i dont know but i do know these tragedies should never happen.

Now that this happened a year later on Banshee at Kings Island, which is in the same amusement park chain, just shows the easy mistakes and stupid decisions people make only to get them injured or killed, people should just wait for the park to retrieve the lost item if such thing happened to them again. I'm not being disrespectful or anything, but it seems like this is happening more especially with inverted rollercoasters, the first being Six Flags Over Georgias Batman. I wish the families of Nelson, Young, and Guyton very well after these incidents.
