Sir, please continue to make videos! I value experience and the patience to teach over a pay for play school any day! If you keep teaching I'll keep watching that's for sure! To many of these techniques are lost to time.

do you really need help putting on tung oil?

bryan nonya Do you really feel the need to say something negative for absolutely no reason? Does it make you feel good about yourself? He was just expressing his appreciation for recording and sharing this video. If you don’t like it, why after you watching this video? Or reading the comments?! Get a hobby.

Don't chuck a foam brush when you are done. Keep it, let it dry out and then use the handles as dowels.

Great idea. My home was built in the 1940s the whole roof is red cedar. I went into the attic and found huge boards of red cedar left over that I am going to cut down and use them over my front door entryway. 80 year old new oldstock!

I bet they turned out beautiful Lewis! Do you find that the poly bonds stronger to the tung oil versus directly to the wood? I wish you made more videos!

Yes Tung Oil produces a great finish BUT is probably the most difficult finish to apply - which is one reason the stores sell finishes with SOME (often very little) actual Tung Oil! First thing is to get 100% pure Tung Oil. I usually thin it with 50% paint thinner for the first coat or two - because pure T O is like painting with Molasses - just won’t spread easily. Second, buff each coat AFTER letting it dry overnight with Steel Wool never sandpaper which scratches. Use tack cloth or rag dampened with paint thinner to wipe off dust. Apply minimum 4 coats - one per day. Sometimes (wet environment like Teak seat in shower) I seal with Waterlox - the BEST varnish - a 1910 recipe made with…Tung Oil! Forget plastic poly stuff. Clean up with paint thinner. T O dries VERY slowly. It - and Waterlox have a limited shelf life though despite that. Maybe a year. Can’t open it after using 5 years later. Hardens up. I just heard there is a gaseous substance to inject to drive out Oxygen in container to preserve it. Bloxygen or something.

Did you eventually use shellac?
@daviddionne82963 жыл бұрын
You don't want to seal cedar with shellac. It's an aroma you don't want to seal in... hence it's used in cedar chests to repel moths. Great color, nice aroma....

@richardk61963 жыл бұрын
@@TucoJames-qn3iv James, you're so ignorant. How much do you think Biden had to do with gas prices? As for "broken promises" the only one I'm aware of is that slightly oversold the amount of people who would be vaccinated by now. Hence his much higher approval then the dumbass before him.
@TucoJames-qn3iv3 жыл бұрын
@@richardk6196 Calm down, Dick. They said the same thing, about the 4.50 gas prices, during the obama administration. So how is it prices dropped during Trumps 4 yrs? Avg prices here/my whole state were 1.79 prior to pandemic. So you voted for a racist fossil bc the promise to vaccinate...but yet Dick, I'm the ignorant one?
