Nice video showing the use of manual tools - for many it's a lost art. The past three years I've carve several dozen hiking sticks and staff and gift them to people. I expanded those skills to a canoe paddle repurposing one of our red oak trees felled by an ice storm. 29 hours later over a three week period and her beauty is unmatched. I did shortcut the effort with a hand jigsaw, electric planer and power sander.

I made mine from a tree too, a tree I used to swing on the branches hanging down. I went from our barn over the fence onto the neighbor's shed when I was a kid. My old neighbor had it taken down a few years ago and I got some logs from him. Mine is laminated from 30 some pieces.

New to this, but could you run through a list of the tools you’re using? From the types of axes and saws to fell the tree, to the planes to level the wood, to what I think were a drawknife and a spokeshave? Thanks in advance, just trying to understand the collection I need to start building

@TrustinTimber6 жыл бұрын
Kd G. If you do don’t make the same mistakes I did. Choose wood that is very dry, and without knots. Also avoid hard woods like ash for your first one if you’re doing it with hand tools.
@kdg.22916 жыл бұрын
@@TrustinTimber thanks for the tips👍🏽

Awesome build, and great video editing too. What kind of wood was that? Also, what are the other wood options for canoe paddles? I'm thinking it would make a good winter project.
@TrustinTimber7 жыл бұрын
cwy31 this is Cedar. Ash, Cherry, maple, spruce, birch.... I know people who have made paddles will all those with great success. Spruce would be a good first paddle wood just to practice since it's soft and cheap.

Hi mate i like that you have made this and you are right about the knots in the wood, but you have missed something i would like to point out "to be helpful" for future timber selection. As you can see the branch is not that wide you have lighter coloured wood on the edge of the finished paddle, this wood is called sap wood and it is full of sugars and is prone to rotting. As the wood is knotty you and you have said you don't mind if it fails on you then its not so important but for a longer lasting plan aim for a wood that you have cut the lighter edge wood off. Meant nicely and constructively :)

Emanuel B I’ve been getting lots of requests but no, not yet. There are plenty of better paddle makers out there, that can make them a lot faster then I can. Maybe after I make another 20 I’ll consider selling them if I still enjoy making them at that point.

I think you got the Master/Apprentice relationship kinda backwards. He's supposed to bust a gut building the paddle and you're supposed to break it then blame it on him.;)
@TrustinTimber7 жыл бұрын
haha well one day. I'll go easy on him at first.
@Nomadboatbuilding7 жыл бұрын
Spare the hickory switch and spoil the flunky. Just for fun you should ask him sign one of those 17th century apprenticeship agreements that indentures him to you for the next 7-10 years.
