Yes there are plans to run some main line tours and visits to preserved railways. I was told the reason for being dragged was because some paperwork authorising movement under it's own power had not been one

It is yes but to me a poor decision to make York a secondary place to visit unless your interest is in activities for kids and cups of tea rather than see restoration of a locomotive and being able to walk all around the exhibits to look at every detail. Shildon looks to have lines of stock you can only walk along one side of

Flying Scotsman is heading back to Shildon, the home of railways for the summer. I’m reading m a lot of ill-informed comment. It’s not being tucked away, Locomotion is Europes largest indoor railway museum, it’s bigger than NRM York. Although not permitted on the mainline due to not having a maintenance contract in place (that’s a whole other question) she will be doing passenger rides while at Shildon, they have been advertising it for months! Loads more at Shildon too.

It is now the biggest collection in one place, yes, what puzzles me is why they did not expand York but reduced the amount of space there, the place where every tourist around the world knows. We know Shildon because we know more about our railway history than the average tourist who just wants to spend some of their day at NRM and go to other places in the city.
@HighFell
@HighFell Ай бұрын
@@cedarcam perhaps the National Science Museum has decided it should educate tourists to where railways came from? I know County Durham Council is supporting activities at Locomotion and the we are proud in the county of our railway history and the increasing acknowledgment. Shildon isn’t a pretty cute town blessed with chic bars and restaurants. Exactly the place that needs a leg up. York is lovely and has many attractions. So does County Durham but it gets less publicity. As I understand, NRM York is undergoing quite a bit of renovation too so hopefully it will soon expand again as works are completed.

@@HighFell It's great to hear the council is supporting Locomotion. I went to Shildon wagon works open day a couple of times and like other railway works there was a lot of pride in what was made there. They were building Merry Go Round coal hoppers and had all the parts of one laid out on a floor like a giant kit. It is many years since I went in town I imagine it is not the town it used to be since so much industry went, it will be good if the locals get more visitors to the town buying things. There are many places to visit in County Durham yes My Father worked in that area and we have been around there but York always gets a lot of publicity the next place Edinburgh. I have met people even from London who think there is nothing in between and told them there is a huge amount. At the moment NRM is undergoing a huge reorganisation but it seems the things moved to Shildon are there to stay the new hall is not even rail connected. I hope in time the NRM will get some of their huge collection of railway items they have in the other building which is full of signalling equipment signs and models.
@tooleyheadbang4239

@@cedarcam The New Hall is a disappointment. It resembles storage space, not a museum, and the fact that it isn't rail-connected only emphasises this.

@@tooleyheadbang4239 Thats the impression I got seeing it on a video just after it opened. The tracks are too close together so you can only walk along one side and not enough space between pairs of track, the old hall there has a lot more, so it is not going to be easy to take photos, and worst of all as you say not rail connected so all the stock in there looks like being there for ever.

@@cedarcam a lot of people from abroad are just visiting York for one or two days are seeing parts of Europe. Very popular with the Japanese, french and Italians to name a few. They will get to York and say Shildon. Where's that ?
@cedarcam
@cedarcam Ай бұрын
@@axldelticwalton1238 Exactly. I have been asked a few times where the museum is and is Flying Scostman there, it's all a lot of visitors to or country know about our trains and want to see. Telling them she is in Shildon an hour away by fast intercity express then a change to a local train they are not going to have time to do it. In York once in the museum and seen Scotsman they would probably look round other things and spend money there.
@axldelticwalton1238
@axldelticwalton1238 Ай бұрын
@@cedarcam with how the museum is now it's probably busier and the gift shops doing better because of kids but how long will it last ? Once word gets round it's not got as many exhibits as it used to and what are they spending the extra money on ? It's not to drum up more enthusiasts. The NRM is free to visit there's just a donation box at the exit and if they seen to be making too much money weather they spend it or not the government are going to say grant ? You don't need one. What they should be doing is every year budgeting for two diesel and two steam in main line service, it's good advertising. FS can't run for ever and every few years rotate them I'm not saying they can run everything more than half can't run again we know that. Look at some of the vintage carriages some railways look after. They might only come out twice a year like at the KWVR but they manage to run them keep everything in good condition.
@cedarcam
@cedarcam Ай бұрын
@@axldelticwalton1238 It probably is busy now with kids but like you say word will get round there is not much for rail enthusiasts to go for and it will end up with hardly any visitors like us who want to see and learn about things. They used to have great events years ago bringing out exhibits and running locos around or those they could not run open the cab and you could get an explanation of everything. Seems now there are not many staff who know much about trains they just work there. They should also let some locos out on the main again but that is not so easy these days with all the cost of TPWS and Radio having to be fitted, they do not need that on heritage lines though so why not loan things to them It would be great to see some in steam again like they did with Scotsman at KWVR pay £6 to cab them so even if unable to run they could do that, sadly I have a feeling that nothing will be put in steam again and once Scotsman has had it's 10 years I would not be surprised if she was just an indoor exhibit

Thank you Phil. I don't know what the NRM is thinking moving Scotsman just at the start of school holidays when many will visit York and expect to see her, if they think people will then travel all the way to Shildon rather than visit Yorks other attractions I think they are mistaken. @cedarcam in my ignorance, I wondered why FS had to be fired up. Does it actually contribute drive power during the move or is it the only way to provide its own braking and maybe that for the attached rolling stock?
@cedarcam
@cedarcam Ай бұрын
@@MrMWRMWR The main reason they are in steam is because the lubrication of cylinders is done with thick steam oil Steam enables the oil to flow around and prevent damage. Locos can be moved slowly for a short distance cold but for long journeys the piston rods would need removing so it is best to steam the engine and keep everything warm. As well as that yes the steam brake could be used if needed but the diesel controls the brakes on every vehicle normally.

I would say she is our most famous locomotive been over there years ago and did two tours of the country also toured Australia. Wherever she goes crowds flock to the trackside to watch her pass, so moves like this are done on the quiet to stop trespassers going on the track for a closer look, which has happened a few times. even so a couple of US tourists were on the platform asking us when she was coming. So now our National museum has sent her to their other lesser known place just at the start of summer when many would want to see her on display.
