I have been making this pattern for years but with a few changes. I make them 12x12” inside so that a round greenhouse pot will fit in and the lip of the pot will just hang over the frame. I make the frame about 2 1/2” wide and it is more pleasing to the eye than the narrow boards. Four of the leg boards are cut 1/2” wider than the other 4 so that all sides look equal in the end.

Great job on the video. Great Quality and easy to understand. I make mine almost the same. I use a cleat at the bottom for better strength and less external nail hole. . I also make my trim frame on top a little larger and let it overhang a bit. You might like that look a little better. Thanks for taking the time to make the video.

I like to use the paint stir sticks to create the space between the panels. Benefit is they are longer and wider which makes them easier to use than an allen wrench.

Exactly what I use too! Home Depot hates me for walkin out with 20 of em when I buy 1 small can of paint lol. They’re also great for using for staining in between tight spaces a brush or rag can’t get. Just glue a small cut of sponge on the end, dip it in stain and rub rub rub!

Pro Tip: To prevent brad nail blowout, the brad nails have a bevel at the point, and will only curve in the direction of the bevel, so hold your gun perpendicular to the piece your and not parallel.

I've probably made a few dozen of these over the last few years lol, I put little edges on the insides so you can set the base plates in at either full depth or half depth depending on what people want to plant in it

With his you can still do the sides secured together with brads and glue, but those cross pieces are pretty difficult to do without pocket holes.

When you Brad nail and it pops out, what is the best way to fix that? I don’t use mine very often for that reason. I can’t cut the nails short enough and have sharp ends sticking out.

Good question. first work on getting the nailer so that it puts them in parallel with the board and not at an angle. Also the brads are flat on one side, make sure that is not towards the edge of the board. I will try to explain that better in an upcoming video.

That sounds like the case many places. You could use pressure treated pickets too.

If you are wanting a 12” inside measurement, your narrower side pieces should be 12”. The wider ones should then be 13 1/2”, or twice the thickness of the boards more. If that makes sense…. In other words, if you’re using 3/4” boards, make your wide sides 1 1/2” bigger than the opposite sides.

I wouldn't trust the bottom boards holding up with just brads and glue. Especially if you're using wet wood. The glue doesn't stick to wet wood very well. You definitely want cleats for those bottom boards and you should wait until the wood is under 13% moisture content before doing anything.

My boards have been sitting for almost 2 years at this point and I havent had any issues. I will try with some brand new pickets and see if anything weird happens.

If the inside measurement of the planter is 12x12, your frame should be made with12” on the narrow side. I have made dozens of this style out of barnwood and shiplap so it’s hard to make them perfectly square. But I just make the frame separately at 12x12 inside measurement and center it on the planter and secure it.

18 gauge 18v Brad nailer by DeWalt. By far the worst tool in my shop. Completely unusable and DeWalt customer service essentially told me to shut up and go away.
