Hey Andy, I'm here in North East Texas and just wanted to thank you for the build instructions, took a shot at it and the 54° star today too and after about 3.5hrs and some miter saw calibration (didn't realized I was half a degree out of wack and it definitely showed up in my star) I had it done, used a 6ft aluminum Empire ruler for my circular saw to make the taper cuts. You've been a big inspiration for me as a beginner woodworker!

Nice job , not sure is I am willing to drop $80 on such a small amount of product when we can make wipeon poly in the shop .Great demonstration. Cheers

What if I want to make like a 6 foot one can I just double the measurements. Everyone copied each other and did 3’ but I want a tall one to put outside
@cedarriverwoodworking15 сағат бұрын
Yes as long as the measurements are all multiplied by the same amount it should scale like that.
@kenlong175818 сағат бұрын
I plan to paint mine white. Thank you so much. This is great. Question, if I wanted to make them taller yet not as wide, what modifications would you make. I’m sure I need to change the angle, but I’m not sure without experimenting the best way to do it, but you may already know. Also, what size boards did you end up using, and what is the final height of the tree?
@cedarriverwoodworking18 сағат бұрын
I can come up with a version of that. I have been meaning to remake these videos in a better quality. I've seen them made with 22.5 degree angles and that will make it a bit taller. This tree is about 15" tall.

it will be from the long point on the parallelogram when I say flip i mean roll it and keep that same point into the stop block.

Great tutorial on these stars. The 45 is nicer in my opinion. The pocket screws seems a bit overkill. One screw per piece would be plenty. Alternative. An easy glue up is to use a combination of wood glue and some spots of CA to hold the pieces together while the wood glue cures. I have a bandsaw and would resaw those 2x4s at least in 3 to get 3 times as many stars in the same amount of wood as they are quite bulky. Being overly analytical here. Sorry. Great informative video and I believe I will be making a few of these tomorrow as I’m retired and can do whatever I want in my shop. These are in my queue! Thanks for sharing! Take care
@cedarriverwoodworkingКүн бұрын
Yes you can make them out of however thick of wood you want. I do mention in one of the videos that I like to use 2 because I've had them rotate out of the way with just one screw before. Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed comment. I appreciate your support.

I was curious if you felt like the 2 inch brad nails with glue are strong enough to hold the 2x4 together???
@cedarriverwoodworking2 күн бұрын
Easily. The glue is the strong part. The brad nails just hold everything together so that the glue can dry.

You are looking at 54 degrees wrong. think 36 with a fixture
@cedarriverwoodworking2 күн бұрын
I'm not sure what you mean.
@robertbridgen29502 күн бұрын
To make a cut larger then 45 degrees is all you have to do is first cut a spare timber at 45 degrees put that back on the saw put your new cut on the 45 degrees cut then change the saw to 9 degrees making a cut of 54 degrees or what ever the difference between 45 degrees and your target cut Example to cut 60 degrees. put your cut on the 45 degrees change cut to 15 you have 60 degrees. simple as that.

How do you like your Hercules miter saw?
@cedarriverwoodworking3 күн бұрын
It's been great. My only complaint is the rails that stick out of the back, it would be nice to be able to slid it back against the wall.
@zeejimi40443 күн бұрын
Hi Andy, Another great project ! As an experienced hobby woodworker, I would advise against using pocketholes to join up the segments of the star : wood glue would fully suffice, and you don’t have the ugly holes on the rear side either. Also, accuracy in cutting the angles is critical, otherwise there is going to be some spacing between the segments. After cutting the angles on a test piece, the actual angle should be measured on the testpiece, and the miter saw should then be adjusted accordingly (to avoid frustration after a lot of work). Considering the amount of work that goes into this star, 20 to 25 bucks doesn’t sound like a lot of money to me..💵🤷🏼♂️
@cedarriverwoodworking3 күн бұрын
I appreciate the time that you took to write your comment and you can build them however you would like. With the cost of one of these boards around $3.50 and the fact I can build one under 30 min, a person can make over $40/hr selling these. When I batch them out I can make about 4 an hour and thay makes it about $85/hr. That sounds like you're making some really big bucks if you're scoffing at that. 🤷🏽♂️
@zeejimi40443 күн бұрын
@ I agree that when the star is produced in batches then the (for me, low) costs you mentioned could be justified. I was not scoffing in any way at the price you mentioned, indeed on the contrary, I intended my comment to be a compliment and a justification for a fine piece of workmanship and art. 👍👍👍

An extreme angle jig for the miter saw will let any miter saw cut just about any angle. It basically makes 0° a 45° angle.

Just ran across your channel and watched a vid from a year ago, saw something, and decided to look at the most recent to see if you were still doing it... you are. Turn your camera around so that you're not watching yourself on the screen. Your eyes naturally look to the side when shot like that. Look into the camera lens instead. It makes a huge difference.

I have absolutely caught myself doing that. I will fold the screen out of the way from now on.
