As a woman, I find your perspective on what qualifies as a 'good knife' and an every day carry, differs from mine. On your recommendation, I bought the Spyderco Stretch 2 in K390 and its way too big for my medium sized female hand and I already cut myself. I much prefer a Spyderdco Native 5, Delica 4, and Spyderco Para 3 as an everyday carries. The Para 2 is too big for my hand, as is the Manix. I also own the Civivi Sokoke, which is a poor man's copy of the Neutron and I love it. I also don't live on a farm or ranch in Australia and have no need of such heavy use knives. My knife collection now stands at 250 knives. Hand size DOES matter.
@bmljenny Жыл бұрын
Hand size does matter, and purse carry vs pocket carry makes a difference as well. I avoid things that could get bumped open easily.

250 knives! I thought I had a problem. Just kidding of course. The only thing preventing me from purchasing more knives, is the need to oil them once everty 4-6 months! You are correct about hand size. My palm has a circumference of 10.75_in. There are many mainstream, quality knives, that I cannot use, because my hands are way too big. The Gerber Strongarm is a good example. BTW, knife guys like this, love to talk a big game about knives that cost $350-$600. I have practical knives that will put them all to shame, and I've never paid over $150 for a knife. Civivi is a quality, affordable folding knife manufacturer. If I could find a folder that fits my hands, I'd buy one.

It may sound lame, but I carry the blue buggy all summer on the cricks fishin. It's thin, light, and great pocket clip. I can EASILY use it one handed. Pull it, open it, make the cut, close it, and back into the pocket..... all one hand. It will only rust if you want it to. I have a Native Salt, but the pocket clip sucks on it, so I rarely carry it. During morel season, or any other shroom hiking, I like to carry a fixed blade. If it's rainy, I'll carry the Waterway in LC200N. If it's grown over a lot, I'll carry the Benchy 119 to hack branches out of my face. My Deka 2 in MagnaCut is so easily forgettable, it's what I have most of the time. Over a year of ownership, an attempt at sawing through a painted brass staple, using it harder than most lightweight knives ... it's never taken more than a 1000 grit stone and a strop to bring it back. I have yet to actually properly sharpen it. Magnacut is my magic steel, and the thin blade stock just works, no matter what.

Do the handle mods on the strongarm and you might go back to it, plus , at least with the 420hc , you won’t break it even if you totally beat on it! The other knife , no one talks about, is the gerber prodigy. I think is a s good as it’s brethren knife but possibly more comfortable. It is also full tang, thick 420hc steel. I have both… I used the prodigy in the garden all day and at the end I threw it at a board for fun, took it in and it still cut paper. After all that use ,it did not have a blemish on the blade or handle. Cedric I’ve notice one thing about you. You are a fan boy of Spyderco and of “super steel” edge retention. First, I’ve snapped tips on three Spyderco s so I’m not a fan, that why I turned to the “dark side” and pretty much just use cold steel. Plus I’ve never broken a cold steel knife. Second, I’ve found out with heavy use most “super steels” don’t hold a candle to lower end steels in durability. Elmax, magnacut , m4, s20v etc. have great edge retention, but are brittle in the long run. Your cheap steels like aus8,aus10a, 14c28n and 8Cr13MoV (cold steel heat treat) don’t have great edge retention, but take a licking and keep on ticking! On top of that, with just a stone you can bring them back to life in short order. This is not ridicule, this is observation, I still really like and go to your channel because of your knife testing , we just have different tastes in knives.😁 if I had to pick “one knife” and my survival depends on it , this includes fixed and folder, I’d choose the 4 max scout! It’s a folder, it’s concealable ,its as durable or more durable that’s most fixed blades and it can be used for everyday task , even food prep.
@TheScotchaholic Жыл бұрын
Absolutely agreed! I use my super steels for their higher edge retention on highly repetitive cutting of "soft" materials and less abusive tasks/materials, whereas my simpler steels like the ones you mentioned, are my choices for all around and hard use duties. Also, the "dark side" has the most robust and dependable locking mechanism on the market - the Tri-ad back lock. Just chopped some 3/4" - 1/8" branches off of some really tall overgrown weeds with my portable folding pocket hatchet aka the 4 Max Scout, and the AUS10A held up just fine. Cleaned off the blade and tested the edge on newspaper, and it still sliced nicely. Just about a dozen alternating strop passes on each side, and the edge is easily once again very keen. There's definitely something to be said about simpler robust stainless steels, that are properly heat treated and given all-around and hard use blade/edge geometries, that are easier to maintain. I carry an easily pocketable DMT fine/course duofold for touch ups on extensive work - otherwise I strop at home when the edge doesn't need diamond honing.

Scotch, I just got in today a SR1 lite tanto, I already had the clip point version. This thing is a beast. I can flick open it without the thumb studs. The stock is so heavy and robust! Don’t get me wrong I own a Spyderco manix 2 and it is a great knife with semi high end s30v. But as robust as it is, it’s tip is the weak point. I do love this knife too, just can’t be as care free as with the cold steels!
@shinedown394 Жыл бұрын
Uncle Randy, is that you? 😅
@TheScotchaholic Жыл бұрын
@lymedog3176 Yep, I've got the SR1 Lite tanto as well - so awesome! As a matter of fact, Joe X torture tested both versions of the SR1, and the "budget" 8cr14mov steel held up longer to the abuse than the premium S35VN. Obviously, if using the the S35VN version, one would concentrate more on edge retention uses, than straight up abusive tasks. Definitely, edge retention steels have their place, which is why I carry a Maxamet PM2 for repetitive cutting needs, and a beefy Cold Steel folder for harder use situations - alternating between the 4 Max Scout, Recon 1 tanto, SR1 Lite tanto, or Code 4 drop point.
@lymedog3176 Жыл бұрын
Scotch, it’s funny …I got all those Cold steel knives too…like I said if I need slicy knife then it’s a Spyderco or Kizer with s30v or 154cm or even my drop point code 4 also with s35v steel… but hard use I’m the same as you or go to fixed blades like my Terava puukko 140 or strongarm/ prodigy. I’m an avid follower of Joe X , he’s the benchmark man for most knives and his ONLY folders are cold steel and his favorite fixed is survivor Lilly’s APO1s knife. The APO1s is only aus8 which is joes favorite steel for abuse, second is cold steel’s 8Cr14MoV . The 4max scout is only folder Joe didn’t break even vs el bricka, the steel pole or his chopped up volks gti. The knife is a virtual Tank!

That and it's a bit more unassuming than most of my previous main carries, at least in a warehouse setting. Doesn't stand out too much among the box cutters. I picked it up before the Magnacut version was available. I did get a Magnacut version of it for my brother for Christmas last year, since he kayaks a lot. He seems happy with it. Do you think your daily carry is bigger in handle size and blade length than before? I bought many knives based on your recommendations and other KZbin knife celebrities. Thank you! Many are budget-ish office acceptable types, but some were on the expensive-ish end of the scale and most of those were Spyderco. I still love them all, they have that mechanical feel that is so perfect. However, it quickly became obvious the large robust knives have more performance....and axes even more so! Don't get me started on power tools! So, we come full circle, what should I consider for edc carry? It depends on what you are doing....

what happened to the laconico keen? One of my favorite knives and you were the only one who really gave it credit.

Funny. I’ve had my spydie chef for years. I think it’s a great knife, probably a “never sell”. But I just don’t carry it much.

HOLY HELL, i didn't know that you had gotten ahold of a 15V spydie i myself have the manix2, the pm2 and two of the shamans only missing the mule team in the 15V series but i am very curious to see you do your standard testing and review of the 15V!!! Please do if you have already 🤷♂️

Suggestion. I have the same garage walls as you, chip board, and I should have painted my walls prior to filling the garage with "stuff." A regret or regert lol.

Wow just realized the Civivi Sokoke looks very similar to the TRM. Almost too similar 😅 even down to the scales

I got the Hogue Deka in Magnacut a while back, didn't care for the polymer scales. So I got aluminum scales from OG. HUGE Improvement, now has a far more solid feel. What a transformation, highly recommended!

I hated the ergos of the deka, do the more rigid scales improve that?

@@nandayane Almost like a totally different knife. It's now one of my faves.

I liked the Benchmade Bailout as soon as i saw it , so i bought the First Run in 3v , the one that Benchmade felt like lowering the HRC for some stupid reason and didn't tell anyone , because of that i never really connected with it , such a shame .... Anyone want to buy it ?? 👍🖖

I don't carry knives. Just 3 guns. If I can't open a package with one, I use the second. Usually the AR gets it open.
