Funny you say that it was so hard to sharpen or to remove material because I've got the stretch in zdp and I'm almost shocked with how easily it sharpens and how incredibly the edge comes up! I've noticed that using a higher grit might even remove material faster and it is less work in the end...

Sypderco went higher for their "mule team" steel-testing blade run, and a bunch of them cracked after delivery. 63 is a good compromise that keeps everyone happy. When did ZDP come out? Seems like I've had my green Dragonfly's and Caly3's for 10+ years? I discovered way back then how excellent ZDP is and I bought spares... sort of.. I liked the zdp enough that I bought 3 green Dragonfly's and one G10 Dragonfly, took them all apart hoping for a zdp blade that fit the G10 handle and lock in open/closed positions nearly perfect and I got lucky. So now I have a nice G10/ZDP Dragonfly, 1 edc frn/zdp, 1 spare frn/zdp Dragonfly, 1 edc cf/zdp Caly, 1 spare Caly.. and my little bro got a free bastardized green frn/vg10 Dragonfly. I still sharpen with a old clamping Gatco diamond system, the zdp does really well on it, especially following my worn almost smooth fine hone... I dunno about mirror polished, but I end up with a slightly toothy 19deg razor that falls through anything fiberous, holds that edge a very long time, and is easily touched up with 2-3 very light forward freehand passes across the fine hone (I use oil btw). But your right... zdp is tiresome to sharpen, and its also hard on hones/stones.

Use your vast resources to acquire a Rockstead in ZDP with a factory convex edge. Love to see how that extra material behind the edge helps things. Take the Nurf Lurb to the next level. Edit: I also believe ambient humidity should be noted with each test. Soggy paper makes Jake a dull boy.

I always thought that steeper angles were more sharp but more short lived. I guess they last longer because of the geometry but more delicate in terms of chipping/rolling
@acid6urns
@acid6urns 11 ай бұрын
correct. thinner angle edges will be sharper and cut for longer, dropping from 20 dps to 15 dps can almost double edge retention of some steels. but thin edges are obviously more delicate. acute angles aren’t good on low toughness knives, they’re better to use on knives w good edge stability such as cruwear, magnacut, 4v, 3v etc

Hey Big Shooter if you have the time a new avenue of testing could be the micro bevel. Say a 17 degree mirror polished edge with a toothy or mirror polished 19 degree micro bevel or a toothy edge with mirrored micro bevel. I know the micro bevel will stabilize an edge but will it last longer. Anyway have a great week buddy.
@JustPorcupines
@JustPorcupines 5 жыл бұрын
Micro bevels always blunt faster. 17 dps is narrower than 19(obviously), but this actually puts less strain on the apex, unless the knife is used for chopping or hits something hard. Micro bevels are good for edge strength and ease of sharpening, but again, at the cost of edge retention.

We of course know a lot about steels at this point, but have you ever considered cutting a different kind of similar-thickness rope or even a different brand of it with a well-tested steel to see how the results differ? Maybe not as good #content(tm) as testing the steels themselves but I think it'd be interesting to see how widely other test variables can vary
