I personally, hated the ergos on this knife, but I seem to be the only person in the universe who does. This is probably the only SpydieChef video that merits the title of a review. Keep up the good work.

I always think of handles like shoes, very tricky to make one that fits every hand/foot. I find it a hard thing to comment on in reviews, too, as unless theres garishly sharp surfaces or jagged edges, even the most awkward seeming knife might be a perfect fit for someone else

I have wanted a Spydiechef since I seen your first video on it. I was always out of money when they were available. The last run of them Spyderco made the planets lined up perfectly and I bought one. Before the Spydiechef I carried the titanium military ever since it first came out. It was in my pocket all day every day until the Spydiechef came along. The Spydiechef hasn't left my pocket since the day I got it. I have reprofiled the edge to my taste. It is so sharp I am afraid if I slice through the air I might split an atom which would be a bad thing. I live near the coast so having a folder that doesn't rust is such a big plus for me. Also you mentioned in your first video on the Spydiechef that it would make a good hunting knife. You are spot one with that statement. It is perfect in my opinion for such task along with everyday task from the field to the kitchen. I would like to say thank you for your videos on this knife. If not for them I probably would of never payed any attention to the spydiechef. I want to get a Waterway next so it would be a perfect folder/fixed combo set. Again thank you Sir!

It has Evangelion aesthetics. The handle does, at least. The way it combines curved angles with straight lines. It’s hard to explain, but there’s a stylization in everything from the wall panels in NERV HQ to the computer displays, and the spydie handle really brings those kinds of shapes. Which I enjoy immensely.

This was a grail knife for me for a long time, and I finally got one recently (the CQI version). I agree about having an acute point on an EDC knife. I don't go around stabbing things, and I always carry a multi-tool with me (usually a Victorinox Tinker), so I have a point if needed (which it rarely is). I really like this knife, but I do have 2 nitpicks; For ME personally, it's a bit painful to one hand close this knife because the tang of the blade is sharp, and it rubs my finger on it's way closed (again, only when I one-hand close it). Second, I find the hole placement to be a little awkward, and I also find it to be a bit small. Overall, I think this knife is quite beautiful, and it's definitely one of my favorite carry knives. As a side note, while I really like the black hardware on the CQI version, I would LOVE to find some blue accent hardware for this.

This one interests me. My Kapara (CQI revision) has been my EDC for four years now. Whether I'm in jeans or suit and tie, unless I have to go through one of those annoying metal detectors, it's usually on me. If I'm in the backcountry, my Matt Lesniewski Kephart (fixed blade) is my primary. A SAK rides in my left pocket--a Tinker around town, a Bundeswehr model in the woods. I use the Kapara for nearly everything (the Tinker handles cutting through packing tape, to avoid gumming up the primary blade). Last Thanksgiving, I carved our family's turkey with it: it was a bit below peak sharpness but still buzzed effortlessly through the big bird, including joints and cartilage. The Kapara has the fine point. I can't think of a time I've really needed that, and I suspect it's a bit more fragile than the Spydiechef's point. That's not to say that I don't have occasional use for a fine, sharp point, but the Kapara's size makes that ungainly: it's hard to control by the handle, it's unbalanced if you hold it near the end of the blade--you know, with your fingers near the edge--and the point may yet be a bit thick. Big thanks from California! Love your channel!

Obviously I can only speak for my own experiences and preferences, but as a leftie (slash semi-ambidextrous) with a Slysz Bowie, the recessed Spydie hole isn't an issue at all in the left hand. The knife spydie-flicks nicely with the middle finger, which is actually something that can't really be done in the right hand. Disengaging the lock with the left hand, yeah that's a bit more of a problem. Still doable.

Thanks for your review on this and overall approach! Over the past year, you’ve helped me navigate folding knife brands and features (most notably blade steels) and help understand what is and isn’t important in making buying decisions. The sense of humor is appreciated as well. After trying Benchmade, CRK, and GiantMouse I’ve actually ended up on a company I swore I’d never touch in Spyderco. The Spydiechef, Shaman, Para 3 (S110V) and Native 5 (S110V) are more value and enjoyable for me than the other brands. I love the blade steels they use and focus on functionality (fellow nerd and attention to detail lover here). Their QC shows they care, too. I feel good knowing I’ve made fully educated decisions. Nothing wrong with any other brand but with your and other KZbinrs help I’ve learned and continue to learn so much. Can’t thank you enough...keep it up!

Great long term review Cedric! I bought one about two months ago and was worried about some other reviews that said it had lock stick. Mine came with absolutely no lock stick, smooth to open and I have no problems opening it with my left hand (I’m ambidextrous). Very thin in the pocket. The handle and blade shape looks a little weird but once you handle it for cutting makes perfect sense. Your prior cutting test made me decide to give it a try. You’re the only one on KZbin that does consistent and reliable blade steel tests. Good job! ⚔️

I really like the titanium wire clip - it doesn't catch on things or scratch things you rub against. Goes in smoothly. I've quit buying clip knives without the wire clip, just because it's so user friendly and no more catching/scratching things I lean against. Caly 3 has been my favorite, but since I use my knife a lot in the kitchen, I'm thinking of getting one of these to be my edc. Thanks for the review.

Would be great if you could test CTS-BD1N steel (used in Apogee Dragon chef's knives, among other uses) - anecdotally it supposedly holds an edge SIGNIFICANTLY longer than plain BD1, and like LC200N, it's nitrogen-enriched - so it should be extra stainless, too.

Just a quick additional in terms of rust resistance. I've let my Opinel No10 Inox sit in salted bait while fishing, and have rinsed it in the salt water and haven't seen (so far) any rust at all. Pretty good for a circa $30 knife. The only real care I've taken is to wipe it down and spray it with Lanolin after I get home. Well, there was that one time when I left it for a week...but still no rust.

Nice review, Pete. The follow up is very welcome. Too bad about the lack of adventuresome steels in the upcoming Mantra 3, BTW. Yet, this: A 3.8mm, 90mm long D2 bladed, titanium 4.11 ounce 'poor man's Spydiechef': The Two Sun Knives TS51. Mine came flawless in execution & operation, save for an overly stiff titanium pocket clip. You trade the corrosion resistance for a much larger, but slimmer camp & kitchen knife with a superior KVT ceramic ball bearing system. Mine was 1/5 the cost of a Spydiechef, sent direct from Two Sun (19-24 days shipping) -- that is not really the main point, n.b. -- and it comes absent the little design flaws of varying importance on all of my Spydercos, to be honest about 'em. A better flipper long term with an effective, comfortable *small area* finger choil, too, which beats the similarly small ones on my well-liked Stretch and Factor Iconic Compact hands down. So far, so good! For very high grade corrosion resistance with more EDC practicality than that afforded by H1: My recently arrived (and now discontinued?) Spyderco N690 Spy-DK... a Camillus Carbonitride Titanium (tm) "coated/infused" VG-10 marlin spike knife (noteworthy for better ergos in *my hand* than any of my Spydercos-- a true sleeper, wicked sharp right out of the clamshell -- I bought 3 to be "safe")... and a just arrived 2.8 ounce 6114 alloy C.S. Finn Bear for no fuss, featherweight 4" EDC beater/back-up in my everyday packs & bags (mixed feelings so far). I bought all of these with some salt water kayaking & sailing in mind. All bargains, for sure. FWIW & FYI.

I just picked up one second hand. Im the 3rd owner.... There is ABSOLUTELY ZERO WEAR ON THE LOCK FACE... Because it looks carbonized... Mine has a clean line where the titanium changes color. The only wear i see is a slight polishing on the blade tang where the lock face and tang touch. I do not see this lock wearing out... Lol like ever
@ringbadingbingrading1181
@ringbadingbingrading1181 3 жыл бұрын
How is the wear nowadays? Any more? I tend to idly open and close my knives when they're around and all the fuss about titanium on steel has given me some worry with this design. I'll add that the change in color isn't from carbonization. The heat treatment process Taichung uses to harden the titanium discolors it, and they cover that area of the lockface during finishing to keep things tight and proper.

This knife would have been perfect with a hardened steel insert. Why oh why would Spyderco not have used one? The bare titanium lock bar will just wear away on the blade when locked up. I wish they at least would have coated the face of the lock bar with tungsten carbide.
@Smaug1
@Smaug1 5 жыл бұрын
Also, I'm not sure I believe your choice of 3 knives, if you had to pare them down to that. You'd REALLY take three single-bladed locking folders? No tools at all, ala SAK? No fixed blade? What would I take? 1) Victorinox CyberTool M (belt pouch or shoulder bag carry) 2) Benchmade 940 (heavy duty) 3) Victorinox Manager (pocket carry) I'd miss a Mora fixed blade, but since it would only be used occasionally, I gotta go with everyday practicality with the SAKs and just "suffer". I assume I can still have a hatchet. ;)

Specifically it's edge holding ability. However, those worries have been put to bed. It keeps up with all of my s35vn blades, no problem. Also, they are over $200 in the U.S. about $215 since Spyderco increased their prices. I got lucky and picked mine up for $170 used. I've actually thought about buying a 2nd just to have as a back up. Because I'm sure they (Spyderco) will discontinue it just like everything else that I like. Lol.

I just bought a Chef and am awaiting its delivery. I think I will like it; I better because it was fairly expensive, lol. I hope it becomes my EDC. Mayo on cheese is a disgusting sandwich. I tried one by accident when ordering a grilled cheese. Just looking at the thing makes me want to gag.

I'm struggling. Really interested in this, but I have the Drunken and feel the two have very similar blade shapes. On the other hand, I might be prone to use the Spydiechef, more regularly...

Modular clips.. lol was the word you were looking for. Man it would be sweet if they made a compression lock version of the spydie chef.

The more than somewhat Spydiechef-like Two Sun TS51 has a KVT ball bearing system which simply drops shut smoothly under gravity with none of the out of control, swinging gate chaotic* action and clunky, disconcerting bounce on closing that the compression lock blade has. No unsightly & fiddly tab to pinch (👎, IMO), just effortless, painless, un-sticky operation on demand. The titanium-and-steel frame lock's engagement here is as robust as I can imagine needing short of what is sturdy fixed blade territory. This knife just embarrassed the Para 3 I had here on these points before the latter exited in shame. FYI. Check it out on a certain auction site. Cheers. * That's chaotic in the mathematical, physics sense.

I wonder how this favorite of yours, the SpydieChef would compare to the budget Spyderco Resilience for serious kitchen use. Years ago, I bought both the Resilience, and it's smaller brethren, the Persistence. The Resilience immediately became my camping knife of choice, and I ended up just using it a lot in my home kitchen - really nice! The Persistence, however, because of its much smaller size, became one of my few most used EDC's. The SpydieChef really does look like a small chef knife. Do you EDC it much?

I'm sure you put Vegemite on that sandwich at the end, so thank you for not putting that in the video so I can imagine you didn't use that nasty stuff. Lol jk, thanks for the video and everything you do, good sir! I've been in a cycle of hemming and hawing over getting a Spydiechef on and off for a few years now. Just never seems to be the right time to drop the $180-200ish for a used knife, when I'm... Well I'm not sure if it'd be the hemming or the hawing that would prompt me *to* get one, but whichever, you catch my drift. My only real reservation is that I feel like the plain, flat Ti handle is going to be rather slick/slippery, sort of like the ZT0450 or the Cold Steel Code 4. Any thoughts/opinions on that? Cheers!

How do you think this would perform as a camp/tramp knife? My uses would mostly be cutting packaging, rope, food, branches less than an inch, and dressing game occasionally. This seems like a good fit because it is a simple, durable construction and completely rust proof, so in the rain, rivers, and dirt I wouldn't have to baby it. The only thing I'm concerned with is that it may be a bit weak at cutting the heavier duty stuff like wood, so maybe another knife like the Caribbean would be better? My concern isn't the lock because I know that will suffice, but the thin-ish blade stock might chip or bend.

Your instincts are correct, go with the Caribbean. And depending on how much wood, you may want the serrated sheepsfoot version.

Thank you for this video. If you can take a moment to please help me out, I would really appreciate it. I am about ready to purchase my first "expensive" knife, and I am completely torn between the Spydiechef and the Benchmade 940. Which, in your expert opinion, would you choose if you could have only one? Why? If it helps at all, my favorite knife over the past year and a half had been the Ruike P801. Thanks for your help!
