love this so much! i would say one of the best gifts i’ve ever gotten is actually a subscription box honestly. it is called universal yums where once a month a box of snacks from a different country come to your door. my partner got this for me and we take time to sit and go through each snack together i love it so much i renewed it for a whole year for us
@nandayane21 күн бұрын
Any gift with a scent is risky, you need to know that: 1: They aren’t allergic, if not you could be gifting a rash or hay fever. 2: They will definitely like it, often people are extremely specific about what they like, so the smell may piss them off if it isn’t perfect for them. 3: You need to pick something their partner will like, and isn’t allergic to as well. Scents transfer so they won’t be the only one stuck with it.

My parents give us a zoo membership every year which is great because we can go as many times as we want and don’t feel pressure to see the whole thing just stroll around for the afternoon enjoying the animals. We couldn’t afford it otherwise and it reminds me of when they’d take us as kids. 10/10 gift!

The subscription boxes of edibles are actually nice. For example my sis bought my dad a snacks around the world box. He really liked it. Each month a box arrives with locally popular or unique crisps, bonbons, etc, from Pakistan, Spain, Thailand, Korea, Brazil,… It’s cool, because the receivers are fully allowed to hate, or really enjoy them. And since it’s something anyone eats, they’re usually eaten, eventually. Also, if someone is interested in learning about something like wine whiskey or cheese, these boxes can kinda be a low stakes education on them.

Gotta agree with Pete on the 'putting in effort' concept. "Having to" read a book, ticket to go somewhere to do/see a thing _is_ physical effort, on top of emotional baggage lol; free time really is the thing I want the most, but impossible to come get... The exception in the books category might be some sort of functional book like a cocktail recipe book, or a art/photography/images book or anthology of a topic they like. A quality food item usually can't 'fail' in my opinion, since it's splurging that you'd most likely wouldn't do yourself (not frequently at least). Another safe item is probably a small cat trinket/accessory/shelf item for a cat person, or the equivalent for a dog person. T-shirts and anything to do with 'design' is likely too risky, since taste is far too subjective to pinpoint, generally. Drinkware tableware probably a tad cumbersome for most, since again, apartment life lol.

I have over 80 geek t-shirts with funny and pop-culture references. Worn them as go-to attire for the best part of 35 years. Used public transport for a lot of that time. And Pete, I can count on one hand how many people have ever commented or said anything in passing. Maybe it's because I look like Lurch, but I'm gonna say that most people just don't pay that much attention. They make me smile, and that's what counts. Teresa wins that idea. Any gift that is focused on your 'likes' is a massive win. Not only is the gift great, but it also shows that the person giving it actually knows you and actually gives a sh!t. I hate it when people give me gifts for things that they think I should like - jam it. Give me something that I will actually watch/read/use. Take care all.

for me, the thought behind getting a gift is what's important. if I receive a gift that seems like any amount of thought or effort has been put into it, I'm thrilled no matter what it is, from a card to a PS5. which is why I think gift cards are the ultimate sh*t gift. I would much rather someone keep the money and just get me a card, or nothing at all, than a gift card. a gift card says "I can't be arsed to figure out something to get you but I feel obligated to so here's something." I also won't participate in a gift exchange unless one of the rules is no gift cards.

Bath bombs? That's a secret Santa gift for that random worker in accounts at best. Good quality chocolates sound good but not really expensive if giving to a loved one. Hate to see my wife's reaction if I gave just a box of chocolates. I have done up photo collage boards for my wife for both Christmas and her birthday, she loves them to the point I need to find more photos and room in the house to put them up. Sorry to say Pete, but my wife and I went to the Perth Zoo in Sept and we left saying "That really sucked, not worth the money or time". I always loved going to the zoo but the Perth Zoo really dropped the ball, bugger all animals, so much space which was nice but might as well go to gardens somewhere for free.

I agree with you Pete and my girlfriend agrees with Mrs. Pete (sorry afraid to spell her name wrong). So many gifts are a burden to receive to me. “Great, now I’m required to…”. Side note: why are women so into hydration and carrying around trendy hydration containers? Guys don’t insist on toting hydration containers everywhere. Women act like they will die if they don’t have the latest, greatest hydration device 24/7. Men are certain they will not dehydrate on a trip to run a couple errands.

the problem with books is, to be able to pick a really good niche book, you need to be knowledgeable about that topic. so for example: as a knife nut i'd probably pick a good book for another knife nut, but would i pick a good book for a car nut, or a bike nut? sure, i could go look up some reviews but i'd probably still miss the mark. i'm saying this because it happened to me multiple times, at this time i probably have at least 10+ "mmh nah" books, collecting dust in the bookshelf😂
@adx44216 күн бұрын
I don't take baths ... just vastly prefer very hot showers. I also hate strongly scented anything. Bath bomb is a 1/10 for me, I probably wouldn't keep it in the house long enough to re-gift it. A strong smell in my house someone else chose for me? No thank you. Your wife and mine have about the same ideas on gift giving. I give the list 2/10 for buying for me. That said, my wife and I have kinda gone post-consumerism on gifts for each other. We generally have enough "stuff". We do gifts for friends and family and especially our son, but we generally just get each other one thing that shows we've been paying attention.

Edit, you can’t get a scent for a gift. Way too personal. Also I agree with Pete on books, I’ve been given lots, never read one through.

I disagree. Maybe it's the fat ass in me, but when someone gets me chocolate I might act like it's a 4 or 5 out of 10 but secretly, I'm waiting for everyone to leave the room so I can devour it. Especially if it's new interesting chocolate or candy in general. Also, Pete was right though, American chocolate(Hershey's, mars) they are fucking gross.

From my perspective: Bath bombs and shower gels aren't something I (a man) would want, but most women I know like them. I like chocolate, but I can't tell the difference between expensive ones and regular ones. Books can be good, but my tastes are too specific (and I have too many) for most people to be able to pick on that I don't already have and will like. My allergies keep me from using colognes and such. Streaming subscriptions are a good idea if you know the types of movies the person likes. Subscription boxes don't tend to be very good, in my experience. I'm not into videogames, but I know a lot of people who would love to get a Switch. Photo stuff can be good. T-shirts are good, as long as they fit (better to get too big than too small). I'm not into spa stuff, but massage gift certificates are good. I already have too many drinking vessels.
