Love their work but I have been waiting 3 whole years for a 7/7 from them. Great knives if you can get them.....but yeah 3 years wait on a production fixed blade is a joke. Anyone who does research into the company will see it. Once I get my gear from them - never again.

Herne0011 I got my gso 5 in about 2 months. And I absolutely love it to death. It's my favourite mid sized knife that I own. Now with that said I did pre order and this was also like 4-5 years ago. So maybe production got overwhelmed and not it's crazy slow. 3 years is crazy but the knives are great.

Thx for the replies and a bit of sympathy ey? I have been waiting so long now for a 3.5 and 7/7 I can't cancel and waste the time waited. I have a 4.1 and and a 2.7 and both are good knives. I know that survive has had building fires and lineup changes but their team is tiny and have issues filling orders. I was part of their "starter program" where people paid up front with no date of delivery (though we were not given the impression of years wait). Honestly as one knife guy to a few others - they ARE good knives but make sure you got proof they exist before you buy one. I hope I see my hardware before I get much older :P.

Go for the secondary market - you wont have the wait time but the price might be a little higher. The big American forums and even some Aussie forums have them from time to time. Best of luck getting one :).

Sad that the updates are all lies. Not one model done in 2years of inhouse manufacturing. GSO 5.1 orders are still outstanding when he said a few months to ship. Shane even said that now he is gone too. New orders after new orders and nothing but vaporware.

The main fixed blade I have is a 1st Gen GSO 4.1 in 3V. Amazing knife, awesome value IMO. Saying that they really need to sort the joke of a delay for orders. I feel so sorry for everyone that's waited so long. I've three on preorder though, shows how much I like the actual knives once they arrive. One has nearly been a year on a marked "90 day" delivery factory second GSO 2.7 in 20CV.

New wait time will be over five years. Now they say that 6 or 7 years is not bad because of the Randall wait time. Their issue is the lies and the end product will not be what you ordered. No Delta 3V , then magnacut issue, elmax, 20CV, anf you can be assured that they will change your order.

I live about 12 minutes from Survive Knives facility. Called them up, went over and picked up a GSL 3.5 and got a tour of the shop. Guy was fabulous he treated me and my dog like kings. Doctor I’ve been meaning to stop in and see how they’re doing. Reading the comment section is fairly disturbing. Like I said, I thought he was awesome. Spent an hour and a half with him and felt like one of the family by the time I left👍🏻

Great review. Ton of detail. Those bad boys sell from $300-$350+ here in the states, I'd love to find one for under $200 haha. One of my favorite features that S!K & other companies like Miller Bros Blades gets right is the hammer pommels. I am not a fan of spikes or weird rounded ones, extended tang hammer pommels are actually usable and I appreciate when companies think of that.

Short diamond stone is all you really need , doesn’t take up much room in your pack , if you have chipped your knife so bad you can’t get it right with a Diamond steel , atleast the rest of the blade will still cut 🙌

I ordered my GSO 5.1 back on September 21st 2022, and it arrived at my house on Feb 16th 2023. so that's not to bad even though the website said within 90 days. The knife and sheath that arrived was custom quality with an edge that could cut space/time. I was very happy with what I got and now want a GSO 12. If you don't mind the wait, it's basically a custom knife in quality and you can 100% trust your life with that blade.

Don’t give your money to survive knives ! I bought a Gso6 in June 2017 , paid $250 for it, it’s now March 2021 and I still havn’t received my knife and after refusing a refund I had to file a complaint with the Better business bureau , which Btw survive knives has a D+ rating with!

I really don't understand their logic. They build some of the best quality knives of that category, if not THE best. However, they ask to pay full price BEFORE, you get the knife and in the same time, you have to wait 5 years at least??? That being said, TRC knives , make a similar knife with even better materials and overall quality, at similar price BUT you don't have to wait! I speak about the Mille Cuori (What a knife!!!) You simply pay and you have it! IMO they make the best fixed blade knives at the moment.

Cold Steel Master Hunter in 3V is a good budget option for comparison. Can be had for between $90 and $120 USD, depending on seller and timing. Shorter blade, slightly thicker at the edge, but can be thinned out (it's 3V) to be very slicey. Also doesn't have an exposed tang and the rubber handle is less durable than G-10, but will definitely do just about anything else the GSO can. Also has a DLC coating which is better than the bead blast.

Great review, thanks!! GSO = Guy Seifort Original. The Outback blade is 4.34" and the 4.7 blade is about 4.5". It's a good comparison. I'd love to see a head to head of these two knives. If you like a choil you should try my favorite knife the GSO 5.1.

15:25 I have a Benchmade Field sharpener. It's my go-to sharpener now that I've moved and ghaven't set up my Smith's kit again yet. Actually, I may not bother with the Smith's because I pretty much destroyed the original stones when I reprofiled that MT-5. The Benchade Field is way bigger than that stone though, so may not suit some lightweight hiking officianados.

Outstanding and comprehensive review as always! The older I get, the smaller and more importantly thinner my blade preferences tend to get. Maybe it has something to do with being more comfortable in understanding how much abuse a knife steel will actually take, but I think it has more to do with just not wanting to carry anything that is hard to use to actually slice with or use......I carry a knive now for the other 99.9999 percent of the time when I'm not in a survival situation ;). Of course, as a wise reviewer said " different grinds for different kinds".

Interesting that the Woksharp and Lansky cut tests yielded similar results. I read somewhere about Cruwear (which is 3.5V ish) taking a toothy or polished edge and performing well. As opposed to the high vanadium Steels where toothy does much better. I could be way off But that convex edge performance is particularly encouraging.

Spot on review, Pete. They are great knives and a superb value at the original price. They are too hard to obtain: If Survive! could figure out how to maintain this level of quality and value and deliver in a more timely fashion, they'd take over the knife world. I guess the old axiom of 'cheap, fast, good -- pick two' is correct. It seems that Survive! chooses cheap (in the sense of not overpriced) and good, and sacrifices fast. If you want one faster, you can try the secondary market ... and pay much more. The handle scales on the 4.7 are, in my opinion, the best around. I wish every knife had these ergonomics ... it is so comfortable in the hand. It is even better than the most recent 5.1, which was awfully good. They are an improvement on the earlier models (like that 4.1) which had a much straighter handle shape.

If you do order from them it will be years before you see it. They have no intention of fulfilling orders. There are outstanding orders from 2016 and they are not going to finish them by making them. They say canceled orders are fulfilled orders.

Yeah hey Pete great video. I have been waiting on my survive gso 4.1 for 2 years now I will never buy from them again I read the other comments. Looks like I am in total agreement with some other people about SURVIVE! Not having there production level together correctly therefore I will never ever order another from them. I canceled an order from 3 years ago that I never got and they have an excuse every single time I call why it's not done. Ive t spoke directly to Guy. While being very respectful and pleasant over the phone he dodged a lot of questions and I am a knife nut.....

Love my Survive! Knives! Wait time does suck, but product is 2nd to none. I currently have the new spec 5.1, old spec GSO 10, old spec 3.5 (all in 3v)and old spec 4.1 (this one in m390, though I used limited run s90v for years till I traded it to a collector for the one I have now)

They didn't do the cool US military vehicle thing with the stars and stripes in reverse on one side so it streams back as the knife travels forward. I guess it is a knife not a helicopter. Although I have seen one knife at least with this detail, can't remember what brand it was though.

When I talk about field sharpen-ability I usually refer to like sharpening with a flat stone you got out of a creek somewhere and using tree bark as a strop, because that`s the most "field like" you can get. While this might fall under "survival fantasy" I still think it`s valuable to have the ability to sharpen your knife that way because a DC4 can break or get lost. That`s where my opinion comes from that something like 3V or S35VN is a bad survival knife steel, and I would much prefer lower end steels like 12c27, 1095, etc. in my survival knife, maybe something like M390 (havn`t sharpened that yet, how bad is it?). There`s definitily a bit of a disagreement in the "survival community" about steel choice, I just happen to be of the old style "you have to be able to do everything with just stuff you find on the ground" mentality xD

Yes, I agree with the statement that in a short term survival/wrol situation a supersteel like 3V would probably perform better than a more standard steel. This is what I meant with the disagreement in the "survival community". "Long term situation believers" say they want the old school steels for field maintainability, it`s a difference in outlook really.

Survive Knives is no longer a company. Guy shut Survive down, and did a liquidation sale of everything related to the company. That sucks in two ways. Most important is the people who will definitely never get their knives now. We also lost another American manufacturer. One more American company gone. As much hate as Guy gets he deserves but the man can make one hell of a knife. I’ve owned & tested several.

Survive just got their forum shut down on BladeForums due to their bad business practices. The general belief is that they've been selling correctly manufactured knives as factory 2nds so they can generate new revenue instead of fulfilling prepaid orders.

They told me my knife was finished two years ago yet they sold like 10 batches of the 7/7. I don't trust them. I had to cancel my order. There are people waiting three years for their knives and now their draw a concept knife and so you can upgrade to that knife for an additional cost and wait many more years for it to be produced

But when a knife is advertised as a survival knife, it must be able handle almost ANYTHING, m390 will simply not stand up to that kind of abuse..no need to get offended. When i'm talking about toughness i mean: hold up to prying, breaching, throwing, batonning seasoned max span hardwood, hitting rocks etc etc. I'm not trying to trash talk M390, it is a good steel! But for a survival knife steel, there are better steels out there

@@TheGfhicks I sold three of my GSO knives (that are bascially unused shelf queens) on Ebay for $1,200 to buy top of the line Dewalt Table and 12" sliding miter saws... which look way more cool and actually get used. Now in retrospect it was absurd to have 3 slabs of BASICALLY just simple machined small slabs of steel when I could have entire garage full of Shop saws. There is nothing special about these knives to even remotely justify the price much less the wait. Basically just mass produced single piece of steel. Big freaken deal..

GSO stands for Guy Seiferd Original, just FYI... Also, on the GSO Handle/Scales - the handle is not 'ruff' or 'unfinished', it is actually machined micro-textured, a process that adds an extra step to finishing the scales. Again, and I gave you this advice before, go register on Bladeforums and start reading. You have a lot to learn... good thing is that you're a smart guy and can learn fast. But only if you want to...

Good review! These are great knives but the companies' business model is flawed in so many ways, which for me is a reason not to buy them. Kinda sad since these were my introduction to a higher quality of knives than I'd been using before then. But I just can't bring myself to support a company that operates the way they do and I suspect it won't be too long before they go out of business altogether. Cheers!

Now the 4 year wait on the 7/7 is still ongoing. The GSO 5.1 that took place in May 2016 has not even started. To anyone that ordered a 2nd you are really getting the 1st order from someone else then they make the people that preordered wait even longer. Who has a whole year of 2nd sales but not one 1st ordered delivered? They just took orders again on all the cancelled orders that were placed so they say. They tried to introduce a new line of knives even though they had already done that with the new SK line. I can't do business with someone who lies about everything. Nobody from Jan 2016 has received their knife in under 2.5 years and that was only if you were lucky or knew somebody. Fanboys will get their pound of steel for beating down others when they never order yet they keep getting a knife in record time without being a preorder or presale or starter order. They can't finish two models in 4 years and they got a dozen of them out there. The ones that ordered the SK line were suppose to get them in 8 months but 3 years later they have not started.

How did you get one? (Oh from your friend ) I would never support this company. They lied to many people. I have friends who own this knife and the quality is top notch but the performance is jack of all trades master of none. They do not use their survive knives. The best alternative is Carothers Knives. Trust me , do not “pre order” anything from them. Don’t promote them please.

Unfortunately i own several of these knives and after discovering way better steel I'm going to sell them all.. great design for sure but sharpening this steel is a nightmare .. A2 or D2 zero issues sharpening cpmv3 is garbage IMHO

Weird. I’ve learn to sharpen on cheap wet stones. My second good knife i’ve ever sharpened is a BRK aurora in cpm 3v. I’ve never found it a nightmare to sharpen. It’s actually not that bad at all! Maybe you just need to practice a little more? Or change your method?

Honestly, what is the point of even reviewing the 4.7? You can't actually buy these knives.. you have to try to find them on a secondary (like ebay) market to pay inflated prices.

This company is terrible... I placed an order, and it took 2 + years to be delivered. I was stupid enough to place another order and give them a second chance, and I deeply regret it. I am still waiting after 1.5 years. They always have an excuse. It is a scam 😒

Whispy Woods spear point, dull bead blast, dull micarta, dull sabre grind. Not really a relevant criticism for a survival knife. Not meant to be pretty. It's supposed to be versatile & durable. But at least say a falkniven or even srk has a clip point. Just personal taste. I'm sure it works fine

Damn really wanted to like this video, you clearly put a lot of time into it, but you just had so much wrong information. Spending 5 minutes on their website or 15 minutes watching a a review from someone who knows what they're talking about would have helped you out tremendously.

apart from the names of a couple of things, what was wrong? Would like a list of things. Not even kidding. I’ll put them in a correction video. I guess I figured if the review contained the measurements, dimensions and my experiences with the knife and the thoughts I had after then tbat would make for an enjoyable, useful review. But yeah, the specifics of things, particulalry terms, definitely elude me, sometimes. I guess I always put more work into the actual use, such as testing the steel three ways, sharpening and whatnot. I’ve seen you as a commentor before, I know you don’t mean too badly but I’ve had a couple folks come at me in emails about this, all generally focussed on me saying its ‘rough micarta’ instead of the finished correct name (although it does feel rough...?), and saying ‘Guy Seiferd Ordinance’ instead of ‘Guy Seiferd Original.’ Sure, its annoying hearing someone say the wrong thing from a position of instruction, but im also thinking, its not like i got the steel wrong, or didnt show it can baton or get resharpened in the field, or incorrectly say the Micarta is G10 or whatever. and kinda don’t get the issues some folks have had. I shoot pretty loose takes, focus more on the practical use in most of my reviews. I know I get heaps of things wrong in terms of nomenclature. I guess the fanbase of these knives takes those things a bit more seriously. The reaction is definitely different than usual. Then the people with the super negative stories jumping on me for giving the knife a good review when they have some weird business model. Its just not been fun at all.

Cedric & Ada Gear and Outdoors you're right. I'm getting a little too worked up over these details. This should be fun and if it's not, then what's the point of trying to create a community? From my stand point I felt I knew more of the fine points from very minimal effort online. I thought you would have wanted to be sure on your points before presenting the video to the public, but like you said the major points and real use was on point. The knives do not come with leather drop loops, but rather a kydex G clip. Guy takes a lot of pride in his factory edges, I'm surprised your experience was so underwhelming. Some other were corrected by others. There's a lot of hate circling around the company, sorry you attracted some of the negative attention. Sorry to come at you from the other direction. Can I blame it on a bad day at work?

A factory edge is for idiot who's going to chops a tree (13.10). This coming from a guy who broke the tip of a Bark River knife by baton.... is ironic. Where's the lanyard hole? I don't wrap the lanyard around my wrist. I use s shorter lanyard and wrap it at my pinky finger and uses a loose 2 finger and thumb grip. I convert my 4 inch bushcraft knife into a 5.5 inch. Not for heavy chopping, but too lazy to grab a Parang to de limb a brunch.
