In Scotland our big, evil supermarkets are Asda (which is ((or was?)) part of the US evil megacorp Walmart) and then Morrisons, Tesco, Sainsbury's etc then the posh ones (read: pretentious and overpriced) like Waitrose or Marks & Spencer. I usually shop at Lidl or Aldi when possible. I want to see a supermarket evilness tier list. Where the big megacorp ones are compared to pull through carbide sharpeners.

4 years ago a New Zealand supermarket chain ran a SMEG knife give away. It was their most successful giveaway ever. Being kiwis we went slightly crazy over it….. I managed to get the whole set. Best thing was the knife stand. They are ok knives. Great with the tidy knife stand. Still got the whole set in my kitchen and use them daily. So pretty good use overall. Even passed the kiwifruit cutting test 🇳🇿 🇦🇺

I have three of them now, the one you feature (Utility), paring and smaller utility, so I am pretty happy with them. Edge retention is good, just touching up on the steel is necessary.

those stones could use a bit of a dress with an atoma. IME lower grit synthetics especially can clog and lose their effectiveness. I have also found maintaining flatness helps a lot, even if it maybe nominally lowers the life of the stone.

Just 2 recommendations. Depending on the task the recommended universal finish is about 1-3k, to have more bite, but still glide. This steel is usually maxed at about 55-6 range in production knives, so I would finish at about 2-3k. Don't put stones with water on/in them directly in the cases, it wouldn't harm them to clean them occasionally or flatten. nagura will also help.

Coles is a bookstore in Ontario Canada under the Chapters/Indigo corporation. Sobey's, The Super store, Freschco, food Basics, Longos are grocery chains. Canadian Tire and Princes auto are our versions of Supercheap Auto, though Canadian Tire sells everything but food. Walmart and Giant Tiger for groceries and clothing and anything in between.
@tombrown4683Ай бұрын
Hi Pete, Walmart has a lock for most here. Winn-Dixie - higher prices with discounts if you sign up. Publix is the high end- best meat, produce (in store), seafood, bakery but have great buy one get another deals. I'm in the southeast U.S.
@freestatefellowАй бұрын
Fair variety of grocery options here in the upper Midwest USA. Costco is the best balance of value and quality, but requires a subscription and everything is in large packages. Sam's club, Cub foods, Hyvee, Kowalskis all have varying levels of quality and value. Local food coop is actually the best place for top quality produce and often their bulk section prices out better than conventional stores. Wife prefers if all the Kitchen knives match. I'm slowly piece by piece converting us over from Wusthoff to Shun.

While I don't particularly like the welded on, all metal handles they are pretty bomb proof and it'll survive being dropped on tiles, subjected to abuse cranking open your milo tin lid and probably dragged through one of those pull-through sharpeners like the inquisition getting a confession out of someone. I presumably have more than 20 outdoors knifes. Many more thenI will need in my life. However the knifes I use every day are my kitchen knifes. I like cooking so my kitchen knifes are used much more than any of my fällkniven, Casström or my custom handmade knifes. I have 2 knifes are presumably close to 50 years old. One is a carbon steel Sabatier chef knife. It is the knife I will use for cutting up a chicken. It is sharpened like a Japanese chef knife. It is a tough steel that never rolls or get any damage. However it dulls faster. My most used knifes come from Hattori. A famous japanese knife that also maker that also happen to act himself in the cult film Kill Bill. My first knife Bought from them was the Chef knife, Since then I have bought 3 more of them. I could only get them when the USD was weak. They are the best knifes I aver owned.and since the first one I bought I have only stropped them sharp. Mr Hattori have signed all my knifes and he is over 80 years old. I you want to test the best kitchen knifes available you have to get your hands off one of his nifes. My kitchen knifes are presumably among the first damascus knifes he produced. If you compare that to any of his knives you will understand why his knifes are sou famous. You learn more here: hattoricollector.com

It's not necessary to start on a Shapton pro (kuromaku) 320# or a Shapton Rockstar 500#, you can perfectly start on Shapton Pro 1000# to fix the edge on such a soft steel, but it gives you great experience. I would finish off on a 5000, on a Naniwa Pro series, a Shapton Glass or a Suheiro Rika 5000#. Then move on to a 2 micron Jende nano cloth strop in whetstone size, so you don't round your edge on a padel strop. Just my opinion based on 30 years of Whetstone sharpening.
