Ceiling Fan Direction Winter vs Summer

A fool proof way to know ceiling fan direction for use during the winter months, versus warm weather usage.
Most people understand the difference between clockwise and counter-clockwise, but when looking up at a ceiling fan and from a side view angle, sometimes the two directions get confused. This is because our minds are used to looking downward at our watches, or from viewing a wall-clock at a vertical angle, and this causes an optical illusion to some when viewing a ceiling fan's rotation. This illusion goes away if we get directly under the fan and look straight upward at the blade rotation.

You can also stand under the fan with a lit candle. In summer the flame should blow down and in the winter the flame should stand straight.

You misspoke at the 3:14 mark. Counterclockwise is for Summer and clockwise is Winter. You said it right at 1:17 mark. And for those that don’t know the directions, clockwise is the direction of the hand of a clock (like 12 to 1 to 2 o’clock) and counterclockwise is the other way.

There's two people that live here. When we stand and look at the fan as you say, it's like an optical illusion, it looks clockwise to both. When we get under it and look up, counterclockwise. Thanks, you resolved why we kept saying it's clockwise, when in fact looking up at it was counterclockwise. Weird, but true!

If you have bubbles, like blowing bubbles in the summer time you want those bubbles to float down, in the winter they should go up... the reason every one on youtube here has it wrong is because it also has todo with with BLADE ANGLE... in summer time the air should be pushed down or infront of the angle. in the winter time the air should be scouped up by the angle of the blade... but just stick to the bubble method

I did this wrong for YEARS and now that I get it, my friends/family STILL get totally confused when I try to explain it. The best way I can say it is that when you tilt your head back, or are laying on your bed, or floor as he demo'd, the 12, or top of the clock, is closer to your eyes, and the bottom, or 6, is down towards your chin. Looking across the room and making that the 12, which seems correct, is NOT, per all the ceiling fan companies.

I wish you had not published this using specified directions of clockwise or counterclockwise. It turns out that the fan you used to illustrate this has the blades angled the opposite of every fan in my house (and I suspect most fans that people buy). The way to determine direction is whether the fan blows upward or downward, period. Forget the clockwise/counterclockwise designation.
@ModernFanOutletcom
@ModernFanOutletcom 5 жыл бұрын
While you are correct that a good way to know winter vs summer fan direction would be whether the fan is blowing upwards or downwards, what you don't tell everyone is whether it is downwards in the summer, or upwards direction in the summer??? So, to clear it up, it is downwards in the summer and upwards during the winter (with a few odd individual scenarios that could reverse this fact) . HOWEVER, being in the fan business since the early 1990's, I've been around it long into to know that people have an easier time remembering CLOCKWISE for winter and COUNTER-CLOCKWISE for summer. All fans that I've seen are the exact same and if you were to look straight at the outer tips of a fan blade, the blade pitch is always with the higher side of the blade tip facing left, and the lower side on the right, which is exactly as the fan is in the video. I apologize if your fans are different, but if they are I'm not sure what off brand you have that is different from every other name brand fan on the market made over at least the past 30 or 40+ years. I don't know, maybe you're in Europe or somewhere? I know they drive on the opposite side of the road from us here in North America, so maybe they sell their fans with opposite direction blade pitches from ours here. I just know I have not seen any, not even cheap Chinese off brands that have the blades tilted the opposite way. I've seen photos where the image is reversed, but only because for some odd reason it creates an illusion of a steeper blade pitch, but never an actual fan that is any different.

Great video thank you! We have a vaulted ceiling where the height is 24’. The fan is in the centre. Should this still be clockwise for winter?
@ModernFanOutletcom
@ModernFanOutletcom Жыл бұрын
Honestly, with a ceiling the height of yours, and depending upon the fan you have, you may have to do a little trial and error. How high your fan is off floor level can also make a difference. If it's still 15 feet or so from the floor I would try forward (counter clockwise) and on the lowest speed. Many of our new fans at www.modernfanoutlet.com use DC motors and have 6 speeds or more. This will mean the lowest speed is much slower than a normal fan. With one of these DC motor fans, and having a fan that is still high form the floor level, I don't think there would be enough breeze felt below to produce a wind-chill factor. This would mean leaving it going in the forward direction will keep heat from rising to the ceiling more efficiently than the typical reverse setting would do. That said, if you try that and still feel wind chill below the fan in winter, then most definitely reverse the fan direction to winter mode (clockwise). From there, because of your ceiling height, you may need to experiment with the fan to see if the low or a medium speed ends up doing the best to most efficiently bring the heat back down to the living level. Hope this helps.

Can’t believe that some people don’t know CW from CCW direction of rotation. However, it is actually more complicated than the simplistic ClockWise vs Counter-ClockWise answer to the question: “Which direction should the ceiling fan go in Winter versus Summer?” “Why is this answer insufficient?”, you may ask... The problem becomes apparent when you consider the angling of the fan blades! The other hidden details are: where are your ventilation system vents located? Floor vents vs ceiling vents can affect the distribution of cold or hot air in the home. Also, what is the indoor humidity level, and are the occupants sweating a lot or not? Do you have AC or a swamp cooler? It’s maybe less of an effect than the overall thermostat setting and whether your intention is heating or cooling depending on the season. However, there are these other factors like this that come into play given that the problem is one of gaining the optimal heat or cooling effect. Also, to make matters more confusing as to the directional rotation of a fan blade: Are you observing a fan at a high enough speed or with a camera that has a lower frame sampling rate? This physics phenomenon actually can give the illusion of a fan, wheel, or other rotating object appear as if it is rotating in the opposite direction than it truly is! It’s called “aliasing” and has to do with the relative speeds / frequencies of the rotating object versus the observer’s data sampling rate.

Just a FYI: We are all different and learn in different ways. As individuals we look and see things happening in a different light! So depending on which angle you are looking at the fan trying to determine clockwise or counterclockwise, this man’s explanation has help some of us clarify the difference looking at a clock 🕰 on the wall, then looking at a clock upside down from the point of laying on the floor to visualize clockwise 🕰 or counterclockwise 🔄 . Have you heard of those that are dyslexic! It’s a real handicap for some. I’ve also been taught to never be afraid to ask questions! But then there are those that make fun of you for asking questions that come easy for them and not others. So let’s try to be open minded that we all learn in different ways. Thank you ☺️

@@user-je5jq1xp5q In the context of neurodiversity it does make sense why some might struggle with clockwise vs counterclockwise. I also didn't mention the other complicating factor: Which direction are you observing the fan from? From the top, or from the bottom? Depending on the direction you're observing the plane of rotation from, the fan could look like it's moving either way. The concept of direction is relative to the observer.

Pav W In that case you may want to reverse the fan in what is usually the winter mode, or clockwise. Only, in your case run the fan on high or medium speeds to really pull the cool air up there. Depending on how powerful your fan is, doing so should really help. Just remember, with any fan, the higher the cubic feet per minute rating the better it’ll be for doing what you’re trying to accomplish. If using a normal size fan of say 56”, you’ll probably need something that moves around 7,000 CFMs or better to truly benefit from this.

You are so wrong. A ceiling fan moves the warm air down and the cooler air from the floor up in both directions. Don’t think so? When the air moves into the other location where does the air that is there go? In either case, unless your ceiling is quite high (12ft and up) you are more than likely just mixing the air into the total room being 1 or possibly 2 degrees, difference. I think places that sell fans just try to make them into something more than they are.

brady robertson Why is that? Reversing the fan direction, and using the low speed gets rid of the windchill and keeps the heat from staying trapped against the ceiling. With standard 8’ ceilings there isn’t much of a benefit, but in rooms with high ceilings they help keep the room a lot warmer feeling. If you ever own a home with two story ceiling heights, and use a fan in the winter, you’ll become a believer real quick.

Chris Brigham Switch? Don’t tell me you have one of those old fashioned fans with a pull chain and reverse switch? LOL. You need an upgrade to at least a remote controlled fan. New smart fans from Modern Forms are even better. www.modernfanoutlet.com/best-ceiling-fans/modern-forms-ceilingfans.html With those you just say, “Summer direction” and boom, it’s spinning counter-clockwise. Plus, they’ll move more airflow while using 1/4 the electricity. Give us a call and we will be glad to help you when you’re ready for that upgrade. 😉

xEbola Come on now, don’t insult the TroposAir Titan ceiling fan like that... LOL. At least compare it to the real Fanimation fans such as the Odyn or Stellar, which is in the high end grouping of Showroom Collection fans that Fanimation is famous for, and not the low end Studio Collection stuff they make for Lowe’s to sell as more affordable items, cutting corners to help keep cost down. I hope you know I’m just picking with you. But the Blitz is only a $229 fan. You’re gonna make the Titan upset, because it’s a $600 fan and moves nearly twice the airflow volume.

Nope. The key operative: ALWAYS have fan blowing DOWN, all seasons. For some fans this is CW, others CCW. But DOWN does the trick. Winter warm air with the fan blowing UP won't mix into the occupied area of the room because the entry side of the fan operates at a relatively low velocity, and low velocity does not penetrate very far.
@ModernFanOutletcom
@ModernFanOutletcom Жыл бұрын
Would depend upon the fan and the ceiling height. Most of our fans at ModernFanOutlet.com blow a lot more airflow than the typical low end fans found at the home improvement stores. I have a 96" TroposAir Liberator fan in a 22' by 38' space whith a 12' ceiling. Trust me, you do not want that thing blowing forward during the winter, not even on speed 1 of 6. However, in the winter, I have the airflow pattern going up, which pushes the heat out to and down the walls, ultimately getting back down to the floor level where the room is cozy. So, in some cases you are correct. In others, test after test shows reverse works best.

@@ModernFanOutletcom The typical consumer 36~48" ceiling fan doesn't produce enough air flow (in the "typical" room) to overcome the thermocline separation of cold and warm air. The upthrust air hits the ceiling, moves to the sides of the room, and then moves down, but with such diffused velocity that it does not penetrate vertically in the room, instead heading back to the inlet of the fan. Because the inlet of the fan is essentially zero velocity (measured at the thermocline) the only motive force remaining is temperature, which then dictates upward force. Remember too that the objection to downward winter flow is discomfort (due to evaporative skin effect), and by the time you generate enough air flow to force circulation down to the floor level, you have the velocity condition you didn't want in the first place. Another factor: most people in the winter are wearing long sleeves, and this reduces skin evaporative cooling so that downward flow isn't quite the problem one might think. But most people would just be better off leaving the fan off in the winter.

@@petem6503 Not trying to argue with you, but you began this with a flawed statement by wrongly assuming the typical fan size being so small. If you look at ceiling fan sizes, 36” to 48” fan sizes are in the minority. We sell way more 60” ceiling fans and larger, and rarely sell fans below 50”. That is why if you shop all fans you’re going to find way more selections in the larger sizes than that of those under 50 inches. Smaller fans just aren’t big sellers nationwide. Maybe they are in your area, but overall larger fans take up 90% of the market share these days. Anyway, you have lots of good scientific thoughts, but in reality does that mean all ceiling fan manufacturer’s are completely incorrect on why they have all added a reverse setting for winter? Possibly. I’ll forward this to some of them and maybe they’ll rethink it if testing shows they’ve been wrong all along. Thanks for your input and careful thought process. From all of us here at www.modernfanoutlet.com.

@@ModernFanOutletcom Arguing is the best way to arrive at practicality! :-) Looking at HD and Lowes, 52" seems more the average for residential. But the real performance of a room fan should fall back to 1/2 cfm/sq ft @ low speed. Why? Below 1/2 csf people complain about "stuffy"; this is their best interpretation of insufficient air velocity across the skin. [Regional differences: Southwest prefers higher csf; Europe has lots of building with NO venting] Low speed so you can't hear it, and it's pretty good for energy. I looked at one of your 54", and it's rated 6800 cfm. I'm not sure where your 6-speed RPM breaks are....maybe lowest is 1/3 RPM, or 2200 cfm? My biggest room is about 500 SF, so less is fine, and most people (residential app) would find the same. I think I used 48's in the bedrooms and a 60" in the LR. I pretty much run them at low. The fan genre I'm waiting for is the office modular ceiling drop-in that has a VAV terminal built in. Commercial design factors (reduced loads due to better glass, LED lighting, lower computer loads) are driving air flows below the 1/2 csf critical point. I think ceiling fans will be the Big New Thing, creating primary/secondary air distribution inexpensively. I saw one building (decade ago) that tried this, but used evaporative cooling [and BAFans] which is difficult to control. Oh, and your installation dimensions A-B-C for that fan don't look consistent.

How is this even being questioned? Why are people asking about the direction? Can't they see by the angle of the blades if it's going to blow down or up? Or if even that is confusing for some reason, just stand under it and see if the air is blowing down on you or not! This video is like an explanation for infants.

Clockwise, counterclockwise... Summer blow down. Winter blow up. Summer the fan blows on you and cools you. Winter it blows to the ceiling to move the warm air because heat rises.

You are exactly right, but if you don't work at a ceiling fan company then you wouldn't realize how many people still question whether a fan is blowing down or up. I guess if you have higher quality fans you'll easily feel the downdraft and it's a no brainer. For those with cheaper quality fans, where the motors are smaller and do not move as much airflow, like those found for the most part at Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart, etc... it is harder to distinguish, since the airflow is not as noticeable in either directly. Therefore, the #1 question asked by customers, "Counterclockwise or clockwise?"
@cedardog764

clockwise vs counter is not the best explanation for most. The clearest and most simple is in the summer the high side of the blade should be moving forward; in winter the low side.

@@ModernFanOutletcom Well, nothing, besides the "obvious mistake". But to ppl trying to learn this process, it may not be so "obvious" without some correction appearing on the screen. As for many ppl, this is something that can be quite difficult to grasp. And when someone who is searching for clear and concise explanations, watching your video and following along with the audio can only create further frustration and confusion. Why not just mute that part of the video and add a text layover with the corrected info? Or, better yet... just re-do that part of the video and re-upload? Something that would only take you only a few minutes of your time, could greatly reduce the frustration of others.
