Your fan should have two pull switches on it. One controls the fan; the other controls the light. Ceiling fans are ideally suited to have power to them all the time. Wall switches are completely optional.

My son's bedroom appeared to have a ceiling fan mount because it was wired with a light switch and then also a 3 speed wall mounted speed controller. So I took down the rather industrial florescent light and sure enough 3 wires coming in, white, black and red with the red connected to the florescent light and the black just capped. The box also appeared to be mounted by 4 metal screws heading up, and a check with a stud finder showed the box was not attached to a stud so it must have a metal fan support. But then Doh! The mounting bolts did not fit the holes on this 25 year old box! So I found some that did, found a washer that could bridge the smaller bolts to the mounting bracket, and voilà! But being a somewhat nervous guy I also put in a lag hook to one of the joists and hung the safety cable. So far so good. Wiring red to blue, black to black, and white to white resulted in the wall controls performing as expected. Since most new fans do not have a cable for reverse but instead just a little switch on the side nobody ever uses, it works great. I suppose I could have got a new box and attempted to attach it to the brace, but I bet the hole pattern and bolts are all different for that too, so I just chanced using the bolts that fit even though they were smaller. They must have supported a fan at some point, or were at least intended to. And the fan I got was a "small room" size so it isn't super heavy. Pro tip: Some fans, including the one I put in, have an "access hole" inside the switch casing for mounting the fan blades. The bolts for the packing rubbers and fan blades cannot be accessed any other way.

Most apartments I've rented over the years come with nothing on the ceilings, and the wall switches are usually hooked up to the worst electrical outlet in the room's top outlet, so the renter can plug in a floor / desk lamp. Just less stuff a bad renter can break or steal, I guess.

How'd you know the ceiling box was one that's able to support a fan and not just a light fixture
@handydadtv5 жыл бұрын
Technically, I didn't. But if it was meant only for a light fixture, the apartment would have come with a light fixture installed. Having no fixture there was justification, in my mind, that the box was intended for a ceiling fan. Plus it was common knowledge that other renters did the same thing.

Generally adding or upgrading your own lighting isn't a problem. I have had some rentals that "request" that they have their maintenance person assist you... but again, request is the word. Many people make apartments their homes for many years and also enjoy decorating and upgrading them, just be sure to reinstall the originals when you leave in the same condition with "reasonable wear and tear", providing you have lived in the house for 12 months or more. ~end note.. so Black is the power.. check.

Thanks so much! I have had good luck with Hunter and Hampton Bay fans. Expect them to be SILENT, especially in bedrooms. If you hear a hum, maybe loosen it so it’s not too tight against the ceiling. You can tell your outlet box is not setup to support a ceiling fan. When you hook up the fan unit the outlet box is slightly lopsided which indicates the box is only screwed onto the joist on one side like for a standard lightweight fixture.
@handydadtv4 жыл бұрын
Then that’s a negligent owner. If it was meant for a light fixture, one should have been installed. If I owned that apartment complex, I would make sure those boxes are fan-safe, or I would make sure tenants know (and sign in the lease) that the boxes are NOT fan-safe.

Great help here 👍🏻 But I have all wires plus a RED coming from ceiling ???? What is the red ??? Where dose it go on fan ?? Thank you sir
@handydadtv5 жыл бұрын
Use a voltage tester to verify, but typically the red wire will be controlled by a wall switch. If this is the case, you can connect the fan’s light wire (usually blue) to the red wire from the ceiling, and the motor to the black wire from the ceiling. That way, the fan will run even if the light switch is off.

With an old 1960 appartment, can I assume the light box is secure enough to hold a small fan? And can it vibrate floor above?
@handydadtv5 жыл бұрын
If your fan hums or vibrates, return it. You can tug on the box to see if it’s secure. Back then, they only had metal boxes usually nailed to wood. But occasionally they used metal tabs to hold boxes in plaster. Those metal tabs will NOT hold a fan.
