In this video I fix my ceiling fan switch. The chain broke one day when I pulled on the switch. It is very easy to replace the broken switch with a new one.

Just as a heads up. You can fix the old switch, what happens is over time the spring gets worn out and stretched. So it just needs to be adjusted. Takes only a few minutes to figure out what position works best for the upper leg so that it springs back the chain just one notch. Good video though

Only reason I'm hesitant to take on something like this is because I can get the wires goofed up so easily but thankfully it looks pretty easy. Not like we have to hook up a whole breaker box, which would take me weeks!

For the past couple weeks I've been dealing with my wife complaining that it's too cold in our apartment when the fan light is on because the fan is running as a result of the broken chain. I clicked the link in the description to buy the switcher and got it in a couple days. Matter of fact I was suppose to get it in one day but there was a delay and I end up getting it in two days. The pull chain switch itself(which you said the spring unwinds and is difficult to put back together) Is actually really, really easy. You just gotta make sure the spring is on the right sides of the nubs that keep it in place, and pull the switch.

Good video helped with learning the guts of the fan. I actually lucked out , The previous tenant broke the chain but left inside was a piece of the chain still remaining so I just grabbed a piece of another chain with that clip in piece and took a thin flat head pulled the broken chain out just enough to clip the other chain on and boom it worked

My fan pull broke a while ago and I thought I would have to replace it. Thank you for this!! $8 order from Amazon and literally ten minutes and it's fixed. The hardest part was not falling off my bed while trying to unscrew the light fixture. (Bonus because my fan pull mechanism was housed within my light fixture, so I took the whole thing to a table and connected everything. No more sweating in the middle of the night! 😊

I managed to replace just the chain in the switch. The spring isn't wound at all just compressed down. When you pop it apart hold it together and you might see how it stacks together in there

Thanks for the video, it helped me replace the switch on mine. My chain wasn’t broken, but the switch no longer clicked and didn’t work. Another commenter either here or in a different video suggested squirting a little WD40 into the switch. After I replaced mine I tried a bit of Seafoam Deep Creep in the old switch and sure enough it started working again. I should have tried that first.

I don't know if anyone has noted this already. The slots for the wires are numbered on top of the switch (black side). Before removing the old switch, take a picture or note the slot number and the matching colored wire. A new switch may have the numbers in a different order. I had this issue. I followed the video and inserted the wires in the same order as the old switch. When the fan didn't work, I found a different video that mentioned the numbers. On my new switch, two of the numbers were reversed. The fan worked when I switched the wires to match the slot number. Also, my old switch didn't have tabs to take it apart. I used a mini screwdriver, inserted into the slot to push back the holding pin, and the wires easily came out. Be sure to turn off the circuit breaker and use caution.

I put a like. This video helped me. My bottom portion you reference in the first 20 seconds of the video didnt come out when I removed all 3 screws on my super old ceiling fan. So after verifying with the first video that came up (this one), I tried again with some force, and yanked it off. Replaced my switch in probably 3 min flat and everything was back up and working. @@guitarfreakozzy It has been so long ago I can't quite remember how I did it with absolute certainty but I will give it a go. Once I replaced the chain and snapped it back into the white piece, I think I placed the spring back on the post, placed the white piece on the spring. I gave it about 2 full turns counter clockwise and then ran the chain through the hole. I held the white piece with my finger keeping the tension and placed my precision screwdriver through the center of the black piece sliding it up the shaft of the screwdriver. I then put the end pf the screwdriver on the center part of the white piece while maintaining the tension with the tip of the screwdriver and slid the black piece down the shaft of the screwdriver and then snapped it back in to place never allowing the tension to release. I guess I feel like I needed a challenge that day...or feeling too cheap to buy another one. Who knows. I hope this helps but that is the best I can recall how I did it.

I found this video very helpful to fix a broken pull chain on a Hunter fan. It broke very close to the switch. I was able to get the switch apart & back together. When I took it apart, the trick to getting it back together: the spring is springy BOTH ways. I needed to load (turn) the spring the opposite of what I first thought. Still took some time & patience.

Had to cut my pull chains off the ceiling fans over the beds in the house, about 4 years ago, because my (autistic, cognitively disabled) son became fascinated with blood and started turning on fans and sticking his head up in them. ...if anyone comes along and thinks that they can just pop open the old boxes: You probably can - I did in about 30 minutes (after I finally got a 'F it' attitude on whether I broke the old box in the process) and when the stupid thing opened... IT OPENED! All over my kitchen floor. Spring and chain remnant and some sort of gear that fell under the pantry door and I didn't find until the next day. ***JUST BUY THE NEW BOX***, especially if you hate contributing to the swear jar. It's cheaper.

It's actually possible to rewind the spring when putting pull chain switch back together, I had done it before. Also some people get wrong pull chain switch, and most often, I see two low speeds instead of one medium speed.
