I don't understand those who denigrate Garfunkle because he "only sang" while Simon did that as well as wrote the songs and accompanied the duo on guitar. How many songs did Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Nat Cole, Tony Bennett, and Elvis write? Great artists all, and who but a few fans can name their song writers, arrangers, and back-up musicians? Art Garfunkel's gifted singing gave the team its angelic sound and he should be given all due credit for his contribution.

I wish that artists would not let egos get in the way, and could better appreciate each other's talents and the special chemistry that they have when together. The stress of success, living in a noisy fishbowl, trying to meet high expectations, having little rest or privacy, all seems after a while to make them irritable and quarreling, like a couple getting lost on a long drive, and arguing about directions or whose fault. The audience sometimes appreciates the different talents and contributions of all members more the performers themselves do,

I saw that concert in New York on video and Paul Simon was talking about them singing together and Art Garfunkel retorted "Yeah, two part harmony. It's great." And then that dig about Paul Simon's height by saying he'd always be taller than Simon whatever else happened. He had one of the great voices, but what a little girl! Good riddance. It's clear from their level of success where the real talent was.

People do forget, or don't know that, though Simon wrote the songs, Garfunkel help arrange many. For example, the song "Bridge Over Troubled Water" had ideas and contributions from Garfunkel that made it even better like the heightened ending. In the end, they were great when the chemistry was working. Definitely one of the greatest duo vocalists ever. They both deserve credit and respect.

Paul Simon would have won 10 Grammys w/out Garfunkel. Talk about riding the coattails of someone. That's known as a jagoff in the industry and AG certainly fits the bill.

I've seen Art perform solo many times, and I even saw his rehearsal of his solo show at Humprey's outdoor venue in San Diego. I was watching by the sound mixer, and Art was displeased with the sound; he left the stage, and suddenly here he was up with me and the sound guy, and he then re-adjusted the audio mix to what he needed. When I saw him in Vancouver, BC, I didn't know he was touring...I just found out when reading the paper while in Seattle; so I went up to B.C..to see the show with orchestra. It had just been post the Dem. convention when Al Gore was nominated, and Art seemed a bit miffed at the big circus show of party nominations, and he commented on it and said: "you know, I don't know what it is we stand for, anymore....."

@@busterbiloxi3833 Conversely, would Simon have had a career without Garfunkel? Simon only gained ground as a solo artist because he was a big name as one half of Simon and Garfunkel. It's arguable that Simon's early songs that he performed with Garfunkel may never have seen the light of day had Simon and Garfunkel never formed their duo and Paul had been forced to make a name for himself as a solo artist right from the get-go. I've worked with both of them and they are not the easiest people to work with, mostly because they are perfectionists. Paul is a workaholic and I spent over a year watching him work, it was inspirational. I was able to see how he vocalizes the melody (in a doo wop style) and constantly edits the music until he feels it is right (that takes a long time!) I still love listening to Bookends and their other 60's albums.

You left out their brief reunion in 1975 when they got together to record “My Little Town”. This was the only song they recorded then, which is why the B side of the 45 RPM record has two songs instead of just one (one by Paul Simon, the other by Art Garfunkel). The song was also included in both of their solo albums, for they felt that whichever album had the song would be the album that fans would buy. So in fairness they placed it on both. This is an important part of S & G history that shouldn’t be overlooked!!

End of (useless) discussions on them :)) Ps. edit: when you listen and watch them better, closer, as here: "Simon & Garfunkel - The Boxer (from The Concert in Central Park)" kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHu4k3mgZad8mZY ...you realize that no matter what, these songs came out of love, of friendship, of a special harmony, connection, tuning between them... A special bond that started when they were just two small kids. And it resonates in their voices singing together, truly pure bliss. As music, and life, love never perish, it's just transformed- and still, its "always the same" :))
