I don't understand those who denigrate Garfunkle because he "only sang" while Simon did that as well as wrote the songs and accompanied the duo on guitar. How many songs did Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Nat Cole, Tony Bennett, and Elvis write? Great artists all, and who but a few fans can name their song writers, arrangers, and back-up musicians? Art Garfunkel's gifted singing gave the team its angelic sound and he should be given all due credit for his contribution.

Paul may be a sneaky back stabbing mouse of a Man but he's a good singer and a great song writer, one of the best of his time. Art Garfunkel was a great Singer and so-so Songwriter and this led to his obvious jealousy towards Simon.

I’ve just read “Homeward Bound” an excellent Paul Simon biography and they had a pretty strange relationship indeed. Paul was in awe of Artie’s looks and height. Once Simon went solo he still confided in Artie at certain times. While Simon is one of the best singer songwriters of the last 60 years and didn’t really need Artie, just listen to their S&G albums and you’ll be often amazed at the harmonies. I think being in a duo with Artie in the 60s was an essential thing for Simon before he went solo and made even better music.

Went to see Art Garfunkel in Feb. 2014. after the music he held a question & answer session. He was asked what everyone wanted to know," Why the breakup?" His answer was that in one of the films, both he and Paul had appearances & lines. Eventually all of Paul's were cut from the film and Paul went home. The film director kept Art for a long time. It was during this time period that Paul wrote the song," The Only Living Boy in New York". This really hurt Paul's feelings and was the start of the breakup according to Artie.
@SweetThing2 жыл бұрын
And so Paul's lines being cut were Artie's fault? Did Paul think Artie should just quit the film because Simon's lines and appearances were cut? Sounds like Paul Simon needs to grow up, what a baby.

Paul Simon is one of the few 'COMPLETE' songwriters in rock and roll history! What do I mean by 'complete'. He wrote the lyrics AND the music! Off the top of my head I can only think of a few others who did that. BILLY JOEL is one. BOB DYLAN is another and JEFF LYNNE. Now in the group The Police, they all 3 wrote songs for the albums, but ALL THE HITS were written by STING. Every other major star collaborated on songwriting. The Beatles: Lennon and McCartney, although GEORGE HARRISON wrote his own songs. The Stones: Jagger and Richards, Elton John had Bernie Taupin, The Eagles collaborated as did The Bee Gees. Even The Beach Boys collaborated. Hey so did Crosby, Stills and Nash. Although Neil Young by himself is a complete songwriter. Hey even Richard Rodgers had Lorenz Hart and then Oscar Hammerstein II. But Paul Simon, a COMPLETE songwriter with probably the best lyrics ever and the most beautiful melodies. He could have made it with anyone with a higher voice than him. Art Garfunkel had a beautiful voice but he should have kissed the ground Simon walked on for making him a multi- millionaire for just standing there and singing. Didn't even play an instrument. It always seemed to me Garfunkel had a bigger ego and had a more dominating personality whereas Simon is much more laid-back and insecure. Hell, The greatest song Simon ever wrote 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' he gave to Garfunkel to sing! Love you Paul, you were and are the best! Art, you're an asswipe.

You forgot to mention that they recorded the album Hearts and Bones and Simon subsequently had Artie's vocals erased. That must have stung. Also, I think writing songs suitable for both of them must have felt limiting when Paul wanted to try new things. There was no room for Artie's vocals on the brilliant Graceland album.

The FACT IS = Paul was natural for Musical talent .... he PLAYED, WROTE and Sang Music ..... his ideas, harmonic sense of it all .... the only thing Art brought ( other than ego ... was Tenor Vocal competency ! He wanted more than his due. He wanted to do things for his ego .... he needed the limelight and some thing Paul did not do .... Acting .... he left Paul in the studio with an obligation to complete the tracks .... Art cared for only his wants ..... he deserved to be cast off and never allowed to sing another song with the real performer = Paul Simon. Paul should have gotten a good Tenor to cover Art's material .... Paul had the rights to the songs HE WROTE them all .... he did the music, played arranged and needed only a harmonic counterpart ! jj

You left out their brief reunion in 1975 when they got together to record “My Little Town”. This was the only song they recorded then, which is why the B side of the 45 RPM record has two songs instead of just one (one by Paul Simon, the other by Art Garfunkel). The song was also included in both of their solo albums, for they felt that whichever album had the song would be the album that fans would buy. So in fairness they placed it on both.
