I was a Software Freedom Day Veteran. --> 2009 Melbourne State Library volunteer. I handed out Linux Gamers and Ubuntu CDs. We had such a massive SFD that year the library put two guards outside the whole time in case anyone tried to steal all the gear we brought. We had someone in LUV [Linux Users of Vic] that year who worked at the library so that was our connect.

If you look at the map of where events are happening, I'm the random dot in the middle of Alaska. I heard about the event because I subscribe to the System 76 RSS feed like it's 2006 or something. When I pitched the idea to my boss (ewaste recycling nonprofit) I was about halfway through the first sentence and he cut me off saying that we were gonna do something for SFD whether or not I was the one to organize it. So that was that. Shout-out for Green Star of Interior Alaska!

HOW have I missed this??: I went to look if there are any relevant events here in Finland, and I just now learned that the FOSS equivalent acronym in Finnish is VALO, standing for (in Finnish): "Vapaa ja avoimen lähdekoodin ohjelma", which is exact same as "free and open-source program", when translated back to English. And the main interest I have with this acronym is that "valo" is the Finnish word for light! "Me tuodaan valoa pimeyteen, joksi nykyinen ohjelmiston maailma on muuttunut!" I let you translate that on your own lol

I love the art event. Finally something to get artists into the Linux space... we have a huge problem with terrible UI. I do dabble in art myself and although I have a Huion (which I pronounce as "who yon"; as in "yonder") tablet I must say I don't really use it anymore ever since I got an Apple tablet.

Assuming Huion is supposed to be written in pinyin (transcription of Mandarin), the first syllable would be read something along the lines of huey (you can paste "hui" into Google translate (from Chinese to whatever) and the TTS there does a pretty decent job)

Speaking of System76, I think they really need to move the kernel in PopOS from the ESP to make it easier for people with existing Windows installations who want to try PopOS/Linux as part of a dual boot to do so, especially when I've seen it recommended in the past. Yes there are workarounds, but messing around with the ESP is not something I'd consider casual friendly.

Not possible with EFISTUB. It's also not necessary because you are allowed to have multiple EFI partitions.

Dualboot only if you have in mind one OS per SSD. Having LinuxOS+WindowsOS partitions on single SSD are a blunder, and will lead to unnecessary issues eventually. Cheaper to have secondary SSD, in summary.

@@vberz4778 I've been dual booting on a single drive for over a decade at this point and I haven't had any real issues. It may also not be an option in the case of say a laptop. The biggest issue was ironically on my Steam Deck where the UEFI for some reason likes to force Windows as the default bootloader, although I use a workaround vis refind.

@@mmstick TIL you can have multiple ESPs, when I looked up the issue whilst trying to install POP, the posts I found said to move/resize the ESP. Although I'm personally not fond of relying on the UEFI as a boot manager depending on the specific implementation, so I would probably still want something like refind, YMMV. edit: That said, Pop could perhaps consider an automatic 'resize and install' option like I've seen on Ubuntu, of course with a massive 'back up your data, don't blame us if something goes wrong you twit' disclaimer. I don't need this but someone more 'casual' might benefit, I do know someone who once wiped a data drive installing Ubuntu.

We need games to directly target Linux and SteamOS platforms. Stuff like OW and many other games run way slower on Linux vs Windows. And even when the FPS is ok they're full of stuttering in so many ways. I say this as a software engineer and professional game dev.
