The Silent Genocide: India's War Against the Naga People The Nagas originally came from Mongolia, migrating to the present Nagalim (Naga Hills) as early as 150 BC. The British colonial regime invaded the western part of the Naga Hills (now the Indian part of Nagalim) in 1832. By 1881, it was declared a British District. It is believed that the British never reached the eastern part of Nagalim (now the Burmese part of Nagalim) until 1930. A memorandum was submitted to the British government (Simon Commission) in 1929 by representatives of the Nagas, known as the “Naga Club,” which was formed in 1918 for constitutional reform. The Nagas clearly asserted their sovereignty to the British in 1929 and again in 1946-47. They unequivocally stated that the Nagas would remain an independent nation and did not wish to join the Dominion of India. The Naga National Council (NNC), founded in 1946, claimed an independent and sovereign state for Nagalim and declared independence on August 14, 1947, as the British withdrew from their territory, one day before India became independent. Nagalim was not part of the Indian Union at the time of India’s independence. Therefore, Nagalim is not part of India. However, India invaded Nagalim shortly after its own independence. India fought against British colonialism but soon became a colonial state itself after being liberated from British rule. An agreement was signed by the NNC with the Government of India called "The Nine-Point Agreement." This agreement recognized the right of self-determination for the Naga people, stating that "The right of the Nagas to develop themselves according to their freely expressed wishes is recognized." The Government of India was to have a special responsibility for a period of ten years to ensure the due observance of the agreement. At the end of that period, the Nagas would be free to decide whether they wanted to join the Union of India or remain independent. However, on November 9, 1949, India unilaterally revoked the agreement, declaring that the Indian Government no longer considered the agreement valid. U Nu (the first prime minister of Burma) and Jawaharlal Nehru (the first prime minister of India) visited Nagaland on March 30, 1953, on their own initiative without being invited. In protest against this disrespect for Naga sovereignty, the Naga people walked out of the meeting en masse, leaving not a single person behind. Nehru was deeply humiliated and disappointed by this action, and in April 1953, the Government of India began ruthless political persecution, including mass arrests, torture, and terrorizing the Nagas. On April 13, 1953, the Indian Government even gave instructions to the Indian Armed Forces in the Naga Hills to rape Naga women. A letter of protest was subsequently sent to the Prime Minister of India against this abominable order. Nehru and U Nu agreed to divide control over Nagalim-Burma would control the eastern part of Nagalim, and India the western part. The border crossed right through the middle of many Naga villages, even dividing houses so that people could eat in the Indian part of the house and sleep in the Burmese part. One house, two nations. Jawaharlal Nehru, the Indian historian and author of "Glimpses of World History", had stated that “By the tribal areas, we mean those long stretches of land between Burma and India which belong neither to India, Burma, nor any other foreign power.” However, after India’s independence, realizing the advantages of an enlarged territory, he made a complete turnabout and insisted that all British territories were now Indian Territory. Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the Indian nation, had stated that “The Nagas have every right to be independent.” In 1956, the NNC formed the Federal Republic of Nagalim. In response, the Government of India enacted the Armed Forces Act and conducted military operations in all Naga-inhabited areas. Gandhi’s doctrine of non-violence was no longer upheld after India’s independence. Thousands of houses, churches, and schools were burned down and dismantled. Innocent civilians were reportedly tortured by high-ranking army officers, even buried alive after third-degree torture. Pregnant women were kicked and abused, and some were reportedly forced to give birth in front of soldiers. Hundreds of villages were burned down. Nearly the entire population was driven into the jungles, where they survived on roots and leaves without medical care. Thousands died of starvation and disease. Village headmen were blindfolded and executed with their hands tied behind their backs. Many strong men were hanged upside down to death or even roasted alive. Many were locked up and left to die of hunger. Many women were raped on the pulpit inside holy churches. Many men were tied up and forced to watch as their wives and daughters were raped by the Indian army. Even men were sexually abused at gunpoint. Many innocent young men were brutally executed, their heads chopped off mercilessly one after another. Lt. Pogholo of Matikhrii village was one such victim, beheaded along with eight other villagers on September 6, 1960. Young women were raped in front of their village elders. A beautiful young lady named Rose from the Tangkhul Naga community was among the victims. The brutalities and horrific executions by the Indian army were beyond human imagination or pardon. Eventually, the state of Nagaland, a small part of the Indian portion of Nagalim (Naga Hills), was created in 1963. Today, the Nagas are divided as Myanmar Nagas and Indian Nagas. The Nagas in India are further divided into Nagaland Nagas, Manipur Nagas, Arunachal Nagas, and Assam Nagas. Unlike the Nagas, the Meitei, through Maharaja Bodha Chandra Singh, ceded “full and exclusive authority, jurisdiction, and powers for and in relation to the governance of the State” to the Dominion Government of India through the Manipur Merger Agreement, signed on September 21, 1949. The actual size of the area agreed upon to merge with India was less than 2,000 square kilometers. However, today, Manipur has an area of 22,327 km², of which more than 20,000 km² belongs to the Nagas. It is believed that the Maharaja was forced to sign the agreement. Dividing the Nagas into pieces was India’s policy to weaken them. But the birthrights of the Nagas can never be taken away by any mighty power on earth as long as the Nagas stand united in heart and blood. More than 200,000 Naga lives have been lost. However, all the atrocities and killings have been kept hidden from the outside world until today. It is time for the world to come and save the Nagas from the heinousness of India terrorizing a weaker nation. The Nagas can no longer bear the brutalities of the Indian army. In the eyes of the Nagas, the Indian army is the real terrorist and the greatest threat to peaceful co-existence. God Bless Nagalim! KUKNALIM!

Yes true but unfortunately even public are not united. Always this tribe, that tribe, our people, your people, our church, your church etc etc. India got Independenc not only because of Hindustan Republic Association, INA, Azad Hind Fauj, INC etc but people from all walks of life contributed and upholds the spirit of Nationalism. India showed Unity but we Nagas only play a blame game. I am not supporting factionism at all but to achieve our goal we all need to stand United and not only Freedom fighters.
