The Tora-san Summit, held in Shibamata, northern Tokyo, drew 20,000 film fans over the course of a weekend in November, including some who even dressed up as the legendary traveling salesman.

It's so sad to think with each passing year, fewer people remember Tora-san. For more than 20 years, my family would get together to watch Otoko-wa Tsurai-yo, even when we grew up and worked in other cities, we would always go home and watch the new movies with family. With it's end, we felt as if a family member had passed away. The series was so well made the characters became so much part of our lives as if they were real people.

The fact that he's making new fans is a testament to his legacy. I only just discovered him a few weeks ago and it's started me on a journey watching the films. There will always be people who will treasure hunt for the icons of a previous generation and discover their incredible worth, just like I have with Tora San, even if they're never as popular as they used to be.

Atsumi Kyoshi passed away in 1996. But Tora-san is immortal.
