We flew back to Indonesia to celebrate the end of Ramadan also known as Eid Al Fitur! I've never shared a KZbin Live on my phone but we are in Alan's hometown Padang and will go to one of the most beautiful mosques - Masjid Al Hakim. I am so excited to celebrate Eid with locals and to share the experience with you.

You look beautiful, thanks for sharing 🙏 Also noticed many came in simple hijab but then put another longer one overtop for praying. They all look beautiful standing together ✨

Yes it’s interesting to see how much it can vary but I think it shows you the diversity. Alan told me as we were outside there was no expectation for me to cover my hair but it’s a holy day so of course I don’t mind. Afterwards when I put the camera down as people were leaving so many people said hello and wished me a happy Eid, it was really so lovely. Indonesians are really welcoming to foreigners this way.

It’s part of our culture in western countries to clean up our garbage. Our taxes pay towards regular beach + park clean up. It’s just not part of the culture in Asia. You don’t see as many hired to clean garbage in public spaces or as many areas with garbage bin service. You do see hired street sweepers mostly cleaning leaves on streets, but not many hired to clean the beaches, unless it’s provided by hotels. It’s something that needs to change in Asia, the respect for environment, the care to not leave one’s garbage behind.

Yes I think on a micro level that does need to change and you do see it happening in some cities. When I walk early in the morning people do clean the beach, although so much comes in from the water it’s a disaster a few hours later. But I also think westerners are too smug because we put it in the trash or recycling and think our job is done when a lot of is gets packaged and shipped to other countries like Indonesia. We may not see it in Canada, us and Europe but we could do a much better job with garbage too.

I don’t see any women without headscarves. But I see so many men at your mosque without head coverings. Seems like a double standard… when i travel, especially in Malaysia, most Muslim women wear long shirts/bottoms + hijab while men just wear Tshirts + even shorts no covering hair or neck and are not expected to dress modest. It’s all so interesting to me, thank you for sharing 🙏

The expectation for women to cover more than men is definitely there. It’s true men can dress in basically western clothes where you don’t see that with women unless they are Christian - which is usually the Chinese community. Or I’ve found if women aren’t in their own community or on vacation they may dress differently. And in the cities like Jakarta it’s completely different. But as I’m Canadian and grew up knowing little about Islam I wanted to share that women in Indonesia aren’t forced to wear a headscarf and believe it’s a choice. What I like about Indonesians is that they are really open about talking about it and their feelings. So if I see a woman wearing a headscarf one day and not the next I’ll ask. And even in Padang which is considered a conservative community I can see things changing with young women. While most of them continue to wear a headscarf it’s very fashionable and their clothing isn’t long and draping but fitted jeans and tshirts unless they are going to formal events or a mosque.

@@ayngelina I’m Canadian too, and also had no exposure to Muslim community growing up so now I find it so interesting learning all of this when I travel. It’s so true, I noticed sooo many women in Lombok + Gilis without head coverings, while in Kampung Baru KL-every local female was covered. But in Pudu a Chinese area, so many women in tanks + shorts. If it was both genders I would respect it so much more. So interesting our changes in clothing in each country. So many beautiful + unique clothing. I guess I feel for Muslim women in the heat bc the double standard with expectations of modesty, that women have to dress so warm bc of men’s nature…as to not tempt or distract them. But I also see that so many Muslim women enjoy the modesty + the fashion + femininity of the clothing. I also find myself wondering about non gender conforming individuals, what a world to be born into. We are more open minded + accepting in Canada but in asia there is sooo much emphasis on gender. In the way you look + in Thailand even the way you speak emphasizes your gender. All so interesting. Again, thks for sharing, I enjoyed seeing the community at their mosque.

Honestly there are times I get annoyed because Alan can wear whatever he wants. He always tells me that I can wear shorts and a t-shirt and no one will say anything but I continue to dress modestly when visiting out of respect, especially as we visit markets and local places and older women there have commented that they appreciate my dress. My biggest issue isn't covering up because I don't want to burn but in India the material is made from cotton and breathable fabrics, actually the pink dress I was wearing is from India. But in Indonesia a lot of it is synthetics and it's like wearing a sweat bag - I just can't do it. Next up we're heading to Bandung in the mountains where it will be a delightful 27C. Interesting point about gender in language in Thailand, we have that in French too, and Spanish but not to the same extent of how we say thank you etc.

@@ayngelina I feel the same way+ try to dress respectful as a visitor but what really gets me is the squat toilets with long pants …it’s a game of hiking up the pants before they get pee stained 😬😂

There is a lot of changing of skirts... or adding an outer skirt. What is the meaning of this?
@ayngelina

The addition of clothing is to cover to the ankles. So if men are wearing shorts they will change, Alan travels with what I call a sarong but that isn’t its name, when he prays he washes, changes into a clean shirt and a sarong to pray.
