On Wednesday, July 19, 2023, guests gathered at Aliʻiōlani Hale to discuss civic engagement with Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea 2023 honoree, Dennis “Bumpy” Kanahele. Bumpy (President of the Nation of Hawaiʻi) and other representatives, share moments of their advocacy for sovereignty, the Nation of Hawaiʻi’s vibrancy today, and legal efforts to acquire land in Waimānalo.

Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea (Sovereignty Restoration Day) was declared by the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1843 following the five-month occupation of the Kingdom by Great Britain. In 2022, the Hawaiʻi State Legislature passed House Bill 2475, which Governor David Ige signed into law as Act 82, establishing July 31 as Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea.
