It was my first time properly celebrating Pride in the Netherlands! I noticed some differences between how it's done in the US vs the Netherlands, which I share here. Also just a vlog on a weekend in the Netherlands and restaurants in Amsterdam.

I like to share my experiences of an American expat in the Netherlands. I describe both the unique and everyday aspects of Dutch culture, and life in Holland while enjoying every bit of it!

Hi Ava! About the chocolate chips. Just buy a bar of good dark chocolate and 'hack' (lever action) that to pieces with a chef's knive.

I think the best shot you have at chocolate chips is to go to the makro or hanos. you can buy in bulk there which does make it cheaper. I do think there are special melting chocolate drops for melting chocolate and drops for in baking like you see in cookies so you might want to pay attention to that also happy pride

So, you didn't take down the flag the same day. It's so nice to see it reflected during your commentary section. Was that showing done on purpose (very cleverly and subtly done!) or a coincidence? Yes, it's great to celebrate who you are in a place where it used to be celebrated to beat who they are.

Nice video Eva/Ava. We generally won't have the American version of chocolate drops in the Netherlands because we are used to using real chocolate instead of the fake one the US uses. Also a lot of US foods will be forbidden by the European food laws.

@Ava Do you have an opinion on the taste of the chocolate in the US? I understand Europeans generally don't like the taste because of the butyric acid added.

Throwing things to the people is ending up in the canals. That's probably the reason not doing it. When the Tour de France (2010) and the Giro d'Italia (2015) cycling tours started in Utrecht there was a line of cars/trucks driving ahead of the professional cyclists and they throw stuff at the people. In September the Spanish Vuelta starts in Utrecht and then they will throw stuff too.

Throwing things: some years ago, I participated in the Canal Parade in Amsterdam, on a political boat. I may still have one or two of the necklaces of rainbow-colored beads thrown at us. Unfortunately, most things thrown at us were cats and dogs - I mean: we got soaking rained. The Parade is not my (straight) thing, but I'm very glad it exists here: showing who you are and being cheered for it. I'm trying to remember the Dutch comedian (Dolf Jansen?) who imagined that at least the male participants would look forward to going to Hell in an afterlife: hot enough to take your clothes off and have a party. (I would rather join them than be in the cloud - with all these files (including mine).)

You can buy a flag pole and a socket you can screw onto the outside wall underneath a window or so for easy reach at the *W. Pijper tool store at Oudegracht 120* (roughly opposite to the HEMA. ) Every house in the Netherlands had such an easy reachable socket till some forty years ago. And most Dutch people used them to celebrate things like bevrijdingsdag and Koningsdag.

Psychology at work. You can't get to the other side with canals as well, unless you walk a detour to a bridge. Just like in street parades..... sigh. And chocolate chips you can make yourself way cheaper. Buy a bar of choclate and scrub it on a cheese/vegetable scrubber. Way cheaper! That is how Dutchies do it and that is why it is not sold ready made here.

I don't care if someone is gay, straight, bi, or whatever. I do find it strange to celebrate a preference. Why not a straight, bi, or whatever parade? Isn't this kind of discriminatory? All people are different and yet all people are people.
@mistrants2745
@mistrants2745 Жыл бұрын
Bi is included in pride. The reason pride is a thing but straight celebration isnt is because historically (and in some way still) LGBT+ communities have been shamed for their orientation which is why they celebrate it like this. Now some people (who arent straight up homophobic) dont like it because of a multitude of reasons and there are some valid points to be made. But its not that weird we dont celebrate straight pride. Maybe we will one day when true equality is there. Or maybe we wont celebrate any orientation. But for now at least the concept makes sense :)

Pride is all about celebrating a minority group to emphasize they deserve all the same happiness and rights in life as everybody else. It's not to set them apart but to really just celebrate their existence. And remember this: society is judged by the way it treats its minorities. So of course pride is not about straight people because they are the majority and always automatically had their rights purely from cultural convention. Equality among all people can only come from recognizing our differences. That is exactly what pride does.

Because heterosexuals aren't being discriminated against because of the fact they like someone of the opposite sex. No heterosexual child will be abandoned by his or her family because it is indeed heterosexual. A heterosexual couple won't be called at, won't be whistled at or won't be physically attacked because they show public displays of affection. A heterosexual couple won't be bullied out of a neighbourhood by their neighbours because they are heterosexual. Heterosexuality is the norm, it is cultural law even. Heterosexuals don't need a pride, they aren't struggling in society because of their heterosexual identity. A large part of heterosexual children aren't fighting with themselves when they realise they are indeed heterosexuals. Heterosexuals don't grow up feeling ashamed about their heterosexual identity. Heterosexuals being jealous of a pride parade where LGBTQ+ people celebrate their identity is ridiculous. A heterosexual pride isn't necessary. Heterosexuals aren't marginalised world wide. Heterosexuals don't kill themselves because they don't see a way how to live a free and happy life as a heterosexual. The pride is for everyone accept for the heterosexuals. Heterosexuals are invited though, to also celebrate everyone else, to celebrate together with all the LGBTQ+. To be real allies. Pride isn't about celebrating being heterosexual though. You don't need it. It is heterosexual pride every day, at every festival or celebration. If the norm was: equality for all and all people are people and all people are different, then indeed a pride wouldn't be necessary. Unfortunately many LGBTQ+ people are still victims of society. And yes also here in The Netherlands. Tell me when you last saw a gay couple hold hands, showing affection to each other, kissing each other intimately in public. Outside of pride you hardly see it. Not because they aren't around. They are censoring themselves. Because they get pestered by heterosexuals in public, when they do this. While everyday, multiple times per day you see heterosexuals showing public displays of affection. So no, straight pride isn't needed. And it is not strange at all to celebrate a gender or sexual identity. You are wrong also calling it a preference. It is not a preference. It is who people are. It is in their DNA. My advise is to go celebrate together with LGBTQ+ people at as many prides as possible. Get to know many different people. And learn. Learn about the difference between a preference and an identity. Learn about the dire situations many LGBTQ+ people are in, world wide. Learn about the political threats they are still under. How they get killed, imprisoned, abused and discriminated against. Pride is fun in Utrecht and also in Amsterdam. It should probably become much more political so that clueless people don't make clueless remarks.
@Pfooh

Is a football celebration discriminatory against non-fans? Is kings day discriminatory against republicans? Is Chrismas discriminatory against Muslims, Hindu's and atheists? A wedding discriminating singles? There's a group, there's a party, you can join in and enjoy, or you can ignore. What else do you need?

You wear something nice to a wedding because OTHER people are getting married and they probably spent a lot of money on that wedding. Not everything is about YOU.
