We were drowning in electronica, rap and new wave at the time, then here comes this simple beautiful song with a stripped down mostly acoustic arrangement and lyrics every poor small town person can identify with. It took the charts by storm and in heavy play rotation on every station. Maybe one day the record labels will get it...Folks will always want this kind of real music by artists like Chapman over today's garbage.

Your face and reaction is everything we ALL felt the 1st time most of us heard this way back in 1988 and (at least for me) I still do every single time it comes on. Getting older (almost 50 now) with children of my own, this song means so much more than it did back then.

@@Nitelite1974 2004 was the first for me. I was 16 at the time. My music teacher showed it to me and it was part of the music she listened to when she was growing up. I fell in love with the song on first listen. I’m in my mid thirties now and listening to it now has a new dimension. Tracey is describing the dream of an ordinary couple working their way out of poverty to some sort of prosperity. That dream is more and more difficult to attain now than it was in the late 80s.

I'm 49, and when this song came out, it was everywhere. I loved it so much that it became sacrosanct to me. Still love it just as much today as I did when I was 14. Her first album is worth every penny. I listened to the cassette tape so much I destroyed it.

She’s as beautiful now as she was in the 80’s when this song first knocked me to me knees. Such pure, raw sonic emotion. Forever one of my favorite songs. Leave tonight or live and die this way.

You got me again, Sarah, tears flowed on this one. 😢 I watched your reaction once, and when I saw you singing along, I had to grab one of my guitars and accompany you and Tracy. My hands are still injured from a couple of falls, and my playing is compromised, but accompanying you and Tracy was an unstoppable compulsion. It took me back many years, and I felt privileged to, (so to speak), play for you. Thank you for a magical morning 😂😇😊🌹

I've been a fan of Tracy's and this song the moment I first heard it in 1988. Even as a 15 year old teenager, I could feel its power and message. So raw, beautiful, and strong. I am a forever fan, and teared up again when I watched this with you. Thank you for your review of this amazing song.

Great reaction Sarah!! Such a beautiful song - I've loved it since it first came out in 1988. I was 10 years old, and was struck by Tracy's storytelling, which is pure perfection!! Her voice & simple rhythmic guitar is so powerful. This live version is wonderful. Cheers!

This is in my faves. OK - I have an outrageous number of faves (over 300) - but it is. And it's possibly the purest song in there. She could sing it entirely solo acapella and it would be epic. It demands minimalism and it's superb in this version. The chord progressions are superb and her vocals are just beyond pure technique. You feel it. I'm a strong believer of the ideal that if the singer doesn't feel the song everyone may as well go home. All vocal gymnastics in the world won't save it. Example? Bob Dylan. Singer he is not. Vocalist? Oh yes. When you get both a singer and a vocalist... And here we are.

Sarah: As good as this is, another of Tracy Chapman's hits, "Baby Can I Hold You," will give you tears of joy and make the hair on your arms stand up. I actually prefer her solo version, but there is a breathtakig duet of her singing this song with opera superstar Luciano Pavoratti. You ought to treat yourself to it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oanGdGWBjdmonNUsi=G5lkhhpwnWaaGTMP And while we're on the subject of Luciano, he has several duets on KZbin with pop music stars. None better than his duet with the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, doing "It's A Man's Man's Man's World." This is must-listen stuff: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZKlanlph56Wf7ssi=IWx2PXC3GfL9jx8W

Im not kidding. Fast Car is not that great a song, but its repetiveness is perfect for the Radio waves of the 80's, so they played it so much that now i cant stand it. Do yourselg a Great favour and listen to the album the song came from and i bet you will think that compared to all the other songs its the least of them all. And that the way its been since a very long time. The tackiest most radio worthy song gets played, meanwhile the genius of the other songs dont even get heard. Its always really shitted me off. And because its the only song most people know, 30+ years later you are still playing it as if she never wrote and sang another song, which might mean the rest of them must be shit. Christ its so annoying and i bet it has annoyed Tracy for decades.
