Wow, I must agree with other commentators, it is a profoundly researched video, as an Ethiopian whenever we mention the Devine intervention was with us during the battle of Adwa, we get ridiculed. It was the ark of Saint George which was held by one of the high priests, upon return of the victory the king built Saint George's church, which is now located in the capital city Addis Ababa, Emperor Menelik's statue is also erected in front of the church. We celebrate every year this victory day by gathering from all corners of Addis on March 2 in this area. Wow thanks for the extra insight that you gave me.🤙

In Ethiopia, particularly in Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, each day of the month is dedicated to a saint. Emperor Minilik took the ark of St. George (Kidus Giyorgis) to the battle and miraculously the battle also took place on the day dedicated to St. George, on Yekatit 23 !

@afk zkl I'm a white guy and I like all history including African and there is too much focus on Egypt I think. So much more African history than Egypt.

I am so reminded of many pieces in the ancient art playlist. Really wasn't expecting to see this aesthetic here. I'm also reminded of a lovely women from Eritrea who somehow wound up in Nashville working at the university I attended. Her and her daughter were two of the sweetest people I've ever met, so I appreciate the rare reminder of pleasant interactions in TN (not my favorite state). Empress Taytu cracked my black - she is bad and bougie with her revolver. Talk about a ride or die, wow. 😂 Her trusty steed doesn't look nearly as confident as she does. Dr. Zucker's "there is a real reverence for the dead" caught me off-guard too, lol. And I loved the detail about front-facing good versus evil in profile. How interesting. The boss was amazing too. I never thought of leather being used in shields - just strong metals. So many unexpected elements to this video - I loved it! Just the right energy for the near-end of a long workday. 🥰

The explanation of the historical event portrayed in this painting is very interesting. Highlighting the cultural references provide much-needed context to a non-Ethiopian viewer, too. However, I wonder how a painting that is not particularly old - 1968 - ended up at the Smithsonian and why the artist is 'unknown'.
@smarthistory-art-historyАй бұрын
According to the museum it was a gift from a couple that owned it since 1968, the year the museum thinks it may have been painted. Unfortunately, there is a long history of works of art exported from Africa where the artist's name has been lost, or was never recorded in the first place.
