Does anyone else bake tomatoes? Our local Veterans Nursing home has a garden the Vets tend. The Chef slices off the tops of their tomatoes and sprinkles olive oil, salt, pepper and Italian seasoning on top then bake them with a little mozzarella cheese melted on. They are delicious. It’s a wonderful side dish.

It's so satisfying to watch Matt eat his first tomato sandwich. I anticipate those for him almost as much as he does. You know you're family is wholesome when you "indulge" on a light bread tomato sandwich. Thanks for understanding what the major media outlets can't comprehend... that America craves clean, Godly, family oriented content!

My grandparents and parents had gardens and I always look forward to them. We have never been lucky enough to have the room for a garden. Maybe some day though I am 69 years old now, so God willing. I'm in the purist camp about tomato sandwiches too...they're the best! I'm born and bred New England. We wait a looooong time for our beautiful tomatoes. My favorite is a slightly toasted Italian bread loaf, sprinkle good olive oil, wee bit fresh oregano. Finish with salt and pepper. Slight variation on the "Matt Pressley special". Love them both. Funny how the thought of home grown tomatoes makes my mouth water. It's the little things that bring so much joy.

Even though I developed an allergy to tomatoes (and all the other nightshade vegetables), it was a joy to watch Matt's pleasure. People who have never eaten a homegrown, vine ripened tomato don't know what a real tomato is. I grew up in a Miracle Whip family and didn't like mayo. One time when I was about 10 years old, I was visiting my aunt and she made me a sandwich and put mayo on it, because I'd forgotten to tell her I didn't like it. Having been raised to be polite, I didn't say anything and went ahead and ate it. To my surprise, it was good! I liked it! So I told her that I didn't like mayo, but hers was delicious, and asked what it was. It was Hellmans (or actually Best Foods, as it's called west of the Rockies). I was an instant convert. I always bought Best Foods for about 50 years, but then when they changed from glass jars to plastic, the taste changed, and I didn't like it. I went to their website to ask if they'd changed their recipe, and found a whole lot of other people had noticed the same thing. The company insisted the recipe was the same, so I think it had to be the plastic jar. After that I started buying other brands, trying to find one I liked. Finally I asked for a jar of Duke's for Christmas one year, because it wasn't sold in California. Aha! I finally found a substitute for old Hellmans. I switched loyalties to Dukes. But I couldn't get it. Then during the lockdown, Kroger's (or Ralph's, as it's called here) started carrying it, and I started shopping there just to be able to get Dukes. Yes, it makes that much difference to me. Macaroni salad, tuna salad, carrot salad, deviled eggs, egg salad, Waldorf salad, sandwiches... What's summer without mayo?

I’ve been eating tomato sandwiches since I could handle a knife to cut tomatoes on my own, probably 7 or 8 years old. I use to bring my school friends home with me after school and we’d sit at our kitchen table and make tomato sandwiches until we couldn’t move. Well we are all close to 70 years old and we still go out to lunch monthly. We pick a different restaurant each month. Well in August I’m going to surprise the ladies and tell them I’m fixing them lunch. I’m going to have a couple loaves of soft white bread, a jar of Hellmans mayonnaise and a huge platter of sliced tomatoes on the table. They will love this because not one of us forgets to tell the story each month at lunch on how we used to sit at our kitchen table and eat tomato sandwiches. I will take some pictures and send them to you. We started this at about 7 years old and now we’re 70 years old! That’s a lot of sandwiches. How we got away with doing this at my home when I was a girl was, my mother passed away when I was 6 years old and my father worked on the road, so my five siblings and myself we were pretty independent. Everyone loved coming to our house, we got away with a lot of good clean fun! Have a good day fellow tomato sandwich loving friends!🍅🍅🍅🍅

Hi Tipper & Matt, Those tomato sandwiches sure look good. I grew up on a Heinz tomato farm, so we ate tomato sandwiches every single day as soon as they were ripe. We basically lived off of them. I never got sick of tomatoes. We didn’t own the farm we lived on, so when money was tight, as it often was back then, those tomatoes, the field corn along with any fish we could catch were our whole diet. We milked a few goats too, so we had the goats milk too. We were all healthy. In the early 80s, my mom was a single mom with house full of kids, working as a waitress for $2.01 an hour , so we thank God for those tomatoes until this day. Eventually as times got a little better, we were able to grow our own garden again and raise some animals and we all learned to help my mom and grandma can, so we had good food all summer and through the winter too. We didn’t have heat or hot water, so we chopped wood all year long to keep us through the winter. When the divorce first happened, we had to wash clothes on a washboard, wring it out ourselves and carry it to the clothesline, summer and winter. We eventually were able to buy a wringer washer that we used outside on the front porch and filled with cold water from the hose. You’d think that was all in the Little House On The Prairie days, but I’m only 56, so most people had real washers and dryers by then, but my mom lost everything we owned when my dad left, so she had to start from the bottom. It was harder for single moms to support their families back then because the culture just wasn’t set up to allow women to be the head of the household. She did it though, and I will always be so grateful to her for working so hard for us. I’d give her the moon now to make her life easier if I could. She’s 80 now and raising her 10 year old great grandson. She’s so good. She’s never had a time in her life to rest-as she raised my younger sister’s three kids after she got sick and passed away, but maybe .that’s what keeps her going. I love watching you & Matt in the garden because it reminds me of that hard work and dedication my mom and us kids had back then. I hope you get all the rain you need and that you can all stay cool. Be well & take care.

Thank you for letting everyone come pick tomatoes with you in your garden and making sandwiches. I was able to pick our very 1st Cherokee Purple tomato and we had tomato (BLT) sandwich for Sunday lunch. This tomato had a really tough core in it, my knife slipped and I cut my finger pretty good but the sandwich was really good! I think we used Hellman's growing up, although I did not eat mayo when I was younger. I had to grow to like it, I would eat what my parents called a "dry tomato sandwich". My husband liked Kraft mayo but now we have switched to Duke's. A comfort/memory from childhood is my mother's tomato & cheese open face sandwich. White bread, tomato slices, plenty of ground black pepper, topped w one slice of "flat cheese" (a Kraft singles type - talk ab something that is not so healthy to eat : ). She would toast it in the oven to slightly melt the cheese and that is still one of my favorite little sandwiches. Of course she would holler if she let it get too hot and then the cheese would be scorched bc she forgot about it in the oven.

And, like some of your plants, some plants have no flowers. Good to notice and decide for next year! Tomato sandwich chat was great, can't wait. I'm like Matt-1 a day until frost, basically. I never thought I would enjoy watching someone eat a tomato sandwich 🍅! Lol. It has taken me a long time to acquire a taste for fresh tomatoes. So I usually eat them in a salad or on any sandwich. But, I can totally understand the goodness of our gardens! And am thankful for the bounty of the food around us. I know how blessed we are. I have always thought that if one is not content with the simple pleasures in life! You probably will never be happy! Thank you for another terrific radioactive video 😊

Another milestone for the year in Appalachia! I'd put some bacon on it myself, but everybody's got their own way to enjoy tomato sandwiches, and that's okay. I'm glad you finally got some rain, we did too! God bless!

There’s nothing like a homegrown tomato sandwiches. I love the smell of a tomato plant too. My mom always bought Miracle Whip but I will eat any mayonnaise. I will eat a tomato sandwich with just the tomato but I will eat it with bacon.

I love how much Matt enjoyed that tomato sandwich...lol I've been getting a lot of tomato's from my plants along with tommy toes, banana peppers and cucumbers. You inspired me this year to give it a try in my back yard. I have limited space so we used what we could find. Flower pots, raised beds and grow bags. I was just so amazed at all my harvest......I thank you for inspiring me. I've had enough to share with my son, daughter in law and my grands, which makes it that much more special when we can share. As for mayo, I use to use Hellmans but last year I switched to Dukes. I'm about like Matt, I really can't tell much of a difference. Thanks for sharing part of your life with us. I always look forward to visiting your channel. Love and Blessings from Eastern Kentucky

Does anybody like their tomato sandwiches soggy? I used to work a split shift as a telephone operator. I’d make my sandwich to have after work. So very good.
