That's one of my favorite things too. I could sit and listen to them talk all day! It's truly conversations you hear in my house or when my family gets together! We have the meat and potatoes of who we are in common. They are so funny, Its nice to see they are serious when needed but really enjoy each other and can LAUGH together without getting angry. I absolutely LOVE Tippers laugh. She has a precious from the heart laugh, it makes me smile every time I hear her! You can truly see the bond and love this family has for one another. Such a rare gift to see anymore.

My husband hated using lotion,or getting his hands so soft, but when they cracked and bled he'd have to use something! He found out about a type bag balm was pure lanolin and bees wax. It was in a plastic jar, gold trimmed in red. The stuff inside was yellow. He got it at the feed store. Hed put it on at night, and you can put a cotton glove or old sock. There are some other types bag balm but they weren't as effective, and cornhuskers was just like using water!!! My son-in-law's mother was a principal at a church school, there was a little boy who kept using bad words, so she told him she was going to wash his mouth with soap and water! She took him to bathroom, used soap and water, she asked him if she got them all out! He said "no teacher theres one still way back there"!!😅

You are right, those old folks were tough. My grandfather had an ingrown toe nail. He'd had enough, he walked out to the garage, lined his toe up with the garage door and slamed it down on his toe. Toe went black and the nail fell off. My brother in-law walked into his grandmother's kitchen one day and found her sitting on a chair sweating and breathing hard. Blood all over the floor she had dug her ingrown toenail out with a pair of scissors. She was taking a break before doing the next one. Took him a while to get over that sight. I could never do that, no way.

This was really fun to hear these stories. I didn't build houses for a living but I did carpenter work quite a bit and still do it today now that I'm retired. I can certainly relate to a bunch of those that Matt was telling about. Really, you know, people who do real work generally have some of these stories to tell because, an occasional injury of some sort is just part of it. One time I was trimming some bushes with a chain saw and I cut my knee real good and had to go to the urgent care and when my wife got home from work, all she found was a bunch of bloody gauze's on the kitchen counter and when she tried to call me I was being sewed up and couldn't answer the phone. I'm still in trouble with her on that one....

They each couldn’t eat a whole lot, they shared EVERYTHING! So after they cut the quarter pounder in half, divided up the french fries, and poured half of their Coke in a second cup, the old fella patiently waited while his Mrs. of many decades ate her lunch. The guy at the next table watched as the Mrs. ate and the old boy waited and finally offered to buy them another meal, thinking maybe they were short on cash. The old feller thanked him kindly and said, “Oh, I’m just waiting for the dentures!” 🤣🤣🤣

Poor Matt! Honey IS the key. Warm some on the stove with 1/2 c. of lemon juice. My mom always gave us this when we had sore throats. You got to be careful popping things in your mouth without thinking about it. I did that once, with a Shaker lemon pie I'd made, where you use the entire lemon, slicing it into thin, round slices. My brother was visiting, and we were about to go for a walk, but I was cleaning the counter first. The pie was sitting there, and in the empty space left after we'd cut our pieces out, a single, round lemon wheel was just sitting there. I popped it into my mouth without thinking, and it went down my throat WHOLE, where it flipped over and lodged firmly, cutting off my air supply! I ran into the living room, and my brother knew at once what was wrong, though afterwards he said he had no idea how he'd known. He jumped up and gave me the Heimlich maneuver. The lemon wheel popped out and flew clear over to the other side of the room, and after we'd both recovered (He said I'd scared him to death) we put on our coats and went for our walk.

I've been watching some of your videos the past few days. The things you make remind me so much of my childhood, spent with my mamaw. She made basically the same stuff you do and I miss her cooking so much. She passed away back in 1990. She used to can the tomatoes my papaw grew in the garden as well as making sauerkraut. She made lots of other things as well but these 2 were, and still are my favorite. I used to take a pint of her canned tomatoes and a pint of kraut, dump them in a big bowl and sit in front of the TV watching afternoon cartoons while eating every bite of it. I just loved eating it this way. No one else in the family did it like this but me. My mamaw never cared that I was eating so much of her hard work. In fact I think she actually like the fact that I loved it so much. After papaw passed away in 1983, I moved in with her so she wouldn't be alone. I was a very young adult and this situation worked out great for both of us. We got along great and I can't remember us ever exchanging a harsh word with each other. When it was getting close to time for me to move out of state and start my own family, I asked her to teach me how to make the kraut. We made a small batch together but unfortunately, I didn't think to take notes as to exactly what she was doing. After what we made was gone, so was she, and her recipes went with her. I tried and tried to remember exactly what she did but no matter how many times I tried to duplicate it, I filed to get it just right. I remember her telling me it needed to be made on a new moon so that when the moon waxes it will draw the brine to the top. She also taught me to keep the jars in a cool spot in the basement and to check them every day or 2 and wipe off any brine that's leaked out of the top. As a child it always seemed like it took months for the kraut to be done. I've been trying to make it again this past year or so and I think I finally got it. The first batch was way to salty and even though it had the right amount of sourness it was way to salty so the next batches, I lowered the salt, little by little till I got it as close to hers as I think I can get. I made a very small batch a few days ago and its on a towel curing in the kitchen. I can hardly wait for it to finish. So far it looks good with no mold visible. Usually when mold would develop, mamaw would just remove the top inch or so of the jar and it would be just fine. I watched you make kraut and I had never seen it made that way b4 so I think next time I have an abundance of cabbage, I'm going to try a few jars using your method and see if I like it that way. It looks much easier than how I've been doing it so if the flavor is there to my liking, I'm going to make it that way from now on. Both sides of my family are from the Appalachian region but I'm not sure exactly where. I do know my daddy's family came right out of the hills of Kentucky. My parents divorced when I was around 8 or 9 and I remember going to stay with daddy on the weekends and he would make chocolate gravy and biscuits for us kids for breakfast. Whenever I would talk about chocolate gravy, most ppl would look at me as if I was crazy. I guess they had never heard of it or it was called something else. We grew up eating lots of beans and cornbread, biscuits were almost a daily item with 1 meal or another. Bacon fat was used to fry just about everything. Some of the kids I went to school with made fun of me because of what I ate or the language I used. Now, as adult, I treasure that part of my life. We grew up not having much but we never went to bed hungry or dirty. So many ppl still look down on ppl from the Appalachian areas and that's so sad. Everyone I've ever known, whether family, friends or strangers, that come from around those parts, are the nicest, most generous people, you could ever hope to encounter. I very much appreciate you keeping this lifestyle alive and kicking. Appalachian cooking has got to be some of the best if not THE best cooking there is. Thanks again!!💛💛

Companion planting can be useful in repelling squash bugs. Try planting nasturtium, catnip, garlic, onions, radishes, marigolds, calendula, and tansy around your plants that are commonly affected by squash bugs.

Oh my, y'all! Once again y'all have helped me thru a sleepless night! I have actually laughed at the crazy things y'all talked about! I especially loved the vampeer story!! I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have y'all to visit with when I'm struggling! God bless y'all always!! Hugs and love from VA!

Mama always said that when you get something stuck in your throat eat the soft dough part of an inside of a slice of white bread and it’ll catch onto it and pull it off

I smashed my thumb in the car door back last August. The nail turned white and fell off! It's finally almost grown back and it took six months to come back out, you can still see it a little, where it was hurt. The worst part was the throbbing. My daughter said I should have put a needle in there to let out the blood but I didn't. Hope you get to feeling better Mr. Matt and always glad to see Miss Tipper!
