I would like to share a story and hope it blesses some of you. A few years ago, my husband and I sold our home and moved onto a small farm in the countryside (we are in rural Germany). We moved to avoid receiving the 'thing/s which we cannot mention by name' without getting our account marked. The house we sold had a rhubarb plant. I was bummed that it did not go to seed the year we were selling the house. We found an old homestead for sale, which was sitting empty for years. When we went to the inspection, my husband motioned for me to come over to him. He said, "have a look at that!" and here was a huge Rhubarb plant... seeds all over it. lol. To me, the Lord was reminding me to trust him and that He is our provider. Not to fear what man was scheming and plotting... but to just "trust me". He is so funny and so good. Of all the plants which had seeds... it was the very one I lamented over. He knew. He loves us.

My son went to be with the Lord in 2022 I got rid of a bunch. I also struggled with the passion for homesteading. But praise the Lord it’s coming back! Getting more animals back this year but need to repair a bunch of stuff from the winter storms we got.

I used to have weeds…..now that I call them “native wildflowers”, life just feels easier. 🤣 Danny , I love having trees as well. Bought my home in 2012 - I bought the house with the most trees (I cannot live in a development with no trees!🌳). I’m on only a 1/2 acre, but I have figs, Asian persimmons, and blue/ras/black/elder-berries. I have a mature pecan. It’s a wonder to live on land that continues to bring forth these gifts. The more I care for the property, the more it gives to me in the way of food, insects, birds and rejuvenation. I don’t have a pond, tho I’ve allowed a ditch along the road to go feral. This brings me 3 species of frogs and toads as well as oodles of dragonflies. I feel sorry for homeowners that only have lawns. They are missing SO much of what the good Lord provides. It all started in a garden, didn’t it? ❤ Love you both, God bless you.

I moved to a rural Louisiana lot and discovered it was once a hill and all the topsoil was bulldozed away. So to have a garden means buckets, digging tools, a garden wagon, forest soil, grass clippings and chopped leaves. I tried to plant a fig tree and was unable to dig a hole in the hard packed red dirt full of gravel. So I got a hole 8 inches deep after three days and managed to save the tree by adding old potting soil and forest soil around it, cardboard boxes in a ten feet circle, grass clippings and chopped leaves/pine straw, lots of water, weeds and fertilizer. So I got a pick axe this year and was able to chop holes, add some forest soil and got over a dozen more fruit trees planted...figs, dwarf everbearing mulberry, and pineapple guava. My garden is slowly expanding. I experimented with making one long row right in the worst spot by adding forest soil and mulching the sides thickly with grass clippings, pine straw and chopped leaves. Other areas in my garden are flattened 6 to 8 inch round wagon loads of forest soil and some places are layers of soil, leaves, pine straw, green grass clippings with soil on top. But things are growing much better than before. Thankfully there was a giant blackberry patch here, so that was great.

A friend here, has put his 1 gallon potted bushes or trees, just out of the pot, and built up around it, so it sits on the ground, it does take more watering to get it started, but eventually the plants roots made their way down through...maybe an easier way?

Thanks for sharing! A little story about loquat. I used to live in San Francisco. A half block away from our flat was a little corner store (very common in the city - they were all over every neighborhood). This one was owned by a tiny woman in her 80s from Burma (now Myanmar). Once I had some sort of bronchitis and was coughing a lot. Iris noticed, and one day handed me a small, dried fruit looking thing she had from behind the counter, and told me to eat it. Within half hour, my cough was gone for hours. It was dried loquat!

I've watched your channel for years now. I've been planting fruit trees in my yard since I started watching you. I don't have much land but I try to put as much have many animals but I have had quail and rabbits, and still have chickens. But I do have alot of of different kinds of fruit. I bought a dwarf mulberry to plant near my house. But I have a full size tree I got from a guy on Facebook close to me. My favorite is my wild strawberries 🍓. They are tiny buy mighty. I got a start off my neighbor's weeping willow ( for aspirin if I need). I can't seem to be able to grow apples but I have a sandpear, peaches, plums, figs, fuyu persimmon and loquat trees. I also have a lemon tree as well. To go with that I have raised beds to grow my veggies. I also adore my wild black berries.

I would not care if my property looked like a literal jungle as long as it was that well stocked with edibles that sustain not only my life but the wildlife as well. The loss of a pretty yard is a teeny tiny price to pay for the reward that this kind of property pays out in return. I think the place looks beautiful actually. So in the end it actually is beautiful to those who know what is actually happening. God bless brother to you and your wife. I absolutely love watching you guys.

I'm so hopeful all my mulberry trees will make it. So far not flowering. Elderberry bushes covered are hanging in there too. I'd love to have a willow tree or two or three lol Not picturesque but definitely lots of eating and beneficial plants. Thank you for sharing and yes growing stuff in the landscape most won't have a clue what is edible.

Being from Minnesota, I've never heard of most of the trees and bushes you speak of. But i do have fruit trees, 4 different apple trees, 4 contender peach (so good) 5 different pear trees, 4 cherry, blueberry, grape, and raspberry plants. More dandelion and white clover than you could want. Plus my in ground gardens and raised beds. I have chickens, i grow meal worms. I'm thinking of getting rabbits for fertilizer. Just have to look and see what they need for keeping. For trees I've planted several maple and crab apple, planted an oak. And I let scrub trees grow for fire wood and what not. I stopped mowing a patch of grass 15feet wide by 1/2 acre long for habbitat for pheasants and other fowl. We need to do what we can, little at a time. To make our yard edible.

I am absolutely loving this content and style of delivery! Im letting the poke go to seed around my place so i can get it from edge of yard instead of the snakey pasture lol. Poke sallet is my favorite green! Really trying to figure out permaculture! I need permaculture for dummies lol

Perma Pastures Farm and The Permaculture Consultant, among MANY others, have good information. The principles are the same, but the application depends on the specific situation.

Great conversation, guys! Spring is a good time to take stock of perennial trees and berries that are the foundation of the homestead: citrus in Dec/Jan, berries start in April, peaches and figs in June, and nut trees finish out the year 😁

I've seen people on KZbin fix their grazon issues by growing corn. They didn't know if it'd be safe to eat so they tossed what they grew but they followed the corn up with beans and had zero issues, so it seems that corn will fix the grason issue. For what it's worth. ❤

I planted those Sawtooth Oaks everywhere. But I’m starting to put in the Dunstan Chesnut trees. Cash crop, and you can eat them vs the Sawtooth Oaks. I love your diversity!

The line is down at work, so this was a nice surprise. Our parts are 3 hours away. They have to pay us for four hours regardless, so, of course, we'll sit.

I have an edible yard. I've worked on it for years. I've also planted edibles for birds specifically. The birds love the yard, which means I don't have many mosquitoes here. They hop in the trees before dusk and munch on the mosquitoes. It's great to watch. Before that, I could barely go outside without being eaten alive. I'm one of those people that seem to have blood every mosquito in the world prefers LOL

I'm like you on being a mosquito feeder. lol I can be standing with others outside and I'm usually the only one they like. Saw more dragonflies here last year so hopefully they will help some including more birds.
