I recently upgraded my trusty Samplitude ProX3 to the finale chapter of my musical life with ProX-8. X-8 included Melodyne which was cool but I'm not yet ready to make the jump to X8 because I'm still polishing up some masters in X3. However, I have begun delving into X8 in anticipation of a full integration soon and I'm working on a tune I recently recorded in tribute to my brother who passed in March of '2020. I specifically wanted it to be a very simple tune so as not to distact from my lyrics. At 71ish my voice is not what it used to be but after months of practicing take after take I have been able to get a combination of takes that I'm happy with. Because this song means everything to me for him I want it to be as perfect as it can be. So I decided to look into Melodyne just out of curiousity. So I will begin looking into initial tutorials for Melodyne...but...after watching this video, I can't help but wonder what they did back in the day before all this technology when singers were either "GOOD" or they sucked! I can't be the only one who feels that making something like music "TOO" perfect is taking the soul out of it! After all...isn't that what music is all about...SOUL? It certainly is and always has been for me!
@celemony Жыл бұрын
Hey Steven, thanks for your comment! Even back in the days studio engineers had all sorts of tricks up their sleeves to make singers look and sound as good as possible. 😉 This doesn’t necessarily mean that the music has to lose all of its soul. These are just tools, and it’s up to you how much or how little you want to use them. Nothing has to (and probably should) be 100% ‘perfect’. It’s all about you and your taste, and Melodyne gives you control over whatever you decide to edit. But yes, please leave the soul in your music by all means! 😎

@@celemony Still an analog guy...back in the day before digital there were still only so many things that could be accomplished or maneuvered to make a singer sound AGAP...[as good as possible]. Not sure why they would concern themselves with how they made them look though. That said...once I discovered I only have the basic version of Melodyne I fumbled thru a few sessions and found the parameters to work with and was able to pull together a pretty decent vocal track. Although my voice certainly isn't what it used to be, it was a pretty humbling experience. And to your point...it's those subtle touch ups that can give the best results. Though being stuck between two worlds, I feel fortunate to see and take advantage of many of these digital advancements that I would not have been able to in the days of yore. So that's one point for digital. I do find it quite ironic though that the digital industry continues to design software that attempts to capture that "Warm"...or as I call it "Analog" sound... That might explain this major comeback of vinyl. I'd be really curious to know what Barry Gordy and the Funk Brothers would think on this subject. As a product of the 60's, I'll still take pure unadulterated & unfabricated soul over this current digital alternative...till my day is done.

Hi guys, quick question. Let’s say I have several notes that are all different and I want to change them all to the same note. How do I do that? (other than doing that one at a time). Just to be clear, let’s say I sing CDEF, but then I want to change all of those notes G. Thanks
@celemony3 жыл бұрын
You could create a custom ‘scale’ with one note only, select all blobs and, with ‘Pitch Snap’ enabled, double-click. Alternatively, click the empty box next to a note name in the Pitch Ruler to select all notes of the same pitch at once and move them to the destination pitch.

Those F notes at the top were flat and should have been F# in the key of DM, my OCD bells were ringing because you didn’t address them. But nice tutorial anyway.
@AspenTruth4 жыл бұрын
This is one of the strengths of Melodyne. Major thirds, minor thirds and the netherworld in-between is a performance subtlety. Obviously right on the note is usually what we intend in many cases, BUT the somewhat flat major third in a “blues inspired” melody is something that is completely intentional. Against a major chord, the slightly pulled down 3rd is “a sound” - it is an important distinction in just about every style (except perhaps classical compositions). What truly makes Melodyne brilliant in this situation is in the ability to either leave that exactly as sung, or even alter a performance to introduce this sound. As always, the visual of the GUI is a great shortcut but the ears always win. Melodyne is the simply the programming aid to do what we use to do - Make the singer sing it until we had enough tracks to make a ‘“deserving” comp. This took hours in the old days with even the best singers.
@reeyotch764 жыл бұрын
@@AspenTruth I came to the same conclusion. During prep for this video, I even corrected those notes to F#. It sounded correct for the key, but wrong for the song. That distinction, and the ability to place those notes in any place that feels right, is what makes Melodyne so cool.

Thank for an amazing video and an inspirational beard dude!! So Im newnto melodyne and I love it. Working in Live 11, after tuning a vocal I then realised that I wanted to edit the vocal wave form a bit. It took me a while to realise why nothing I did was changing (because the audio was now playing from melodyne, as opposed to the vocal track playing through melodyne. How can you make it so that any subsequent edits you make to a take are automatically reflected in the transferred audio in melodyne?
@TabbyCallaghan2 жыл бұрын
Hi great video one thing I am confused about are you saying that you are able to load in an instrument as a pitch dictator if so how is that done or is it that melodyne is applied on other instruments in the session and that it reflects in the vocal session?
@celemony2 жыл бұрын
What Rich means is that you can use other instruments as a visual reference in Melodyne studio. Also, Melodyne can analyze any chords and display a scale grid that shows chord notes only or a scale that fits the chord. This will also help tune vocals fast and easy.

Can we apply to a whole song which we receive? How do we use the standalone to work with a whole song? Can it break the track into parts/stems? I wish there were a full song based/top-down approach focused tutorial/playlist (this is not at all a critique, I am merely stating this in hopes that the content creator (Rich) may see this, believe that it may be a reasonable request, and decide to create the series).
