Thankfully, Lena is YEARS over these thoughts. It's been over 3 years since she composed this soundtrack. How much her mental state has improved, I cannot say... But. In the span of a few months, my mind recovered from its journey with depression, so wouldn't surprise me if that's what happened with Lena. All I know for sure is, Lena ain't at rock bottom anymore. Her recent works on Chicory show that. Celeste definitely helped Lena express and come to terms with herself. Chapter 5 (this track & one more) are perhaps the MOST expressive. And this is just another reason I adore this game so damn much. A truly hidden masterpiece.

@@nup5 This reminds me, not completely related. I follow this one artist and they spent so long working on a song thats meant to be sad, atmosphere of a lost land that was once so beautiful. They worked on that song for so long to the point where they actually got a little depressed from it. A thing he said about the track in his explanation was, " I think it's one of the darkest pieces I've ever written in, was actually kinda depressing after working on it after a while... Just because I had to listen to this, bleakness over and over..."

@@heybra1216 oh dang. I had not considered that working on sadder tracks may bring about depression, but from a psych view... that's perfectly logical. Although, in terms of Lena's tracks... there's subtle evidence that the songs were made because of her 'train of thought', and not the other way around. Regardless, that story is... interesting, to say the least.

I think some of the sound is reversed in the original as well, to make it nicer going backwards? edit: cross-referenced with the original, can confirm the piano here is played backwards in the original as well as a few other things

This track always gets me. Chapter 5 is perhaps the MOST expressive of Lena's real life struggles from several years ago. This track in particular is what got me hooked on this game. Everything before seemed to fade away as I ventured through the mirror... and the music was right on cue. From a composing standpoint, this track is really clever. From an emotional standpoint... this track is really clever... and spot on accurate...

I think I recall Maddy talking about how those game elements subconsciously made it into the final product (not including the obvious references such as color palette and farewell ending flags)... but I'm not sure. dude, the whispers were scary enough in the actual track, but this just makes me want to crawl up into a ball and cry… poor madeline… still, that’s such a damn interesting part of the song, and it really just contributes to the overall feeling of just utter dread i feel listening to this. it’s really relaxing and yet makes me feel like a pit’s opening in my stomach. all in all, totally a track i’d listen to in the middle of the night to just… think about everything.

I feel like the high pitched notes happening occassionally in a way somewhat mimic the high pitched crying that Madeline emotes at the start of this part of the level. Very fitting piece for the subject matter at the time in the level.
