I bought the set so I could experiment with focal lengths and filters before I invested in good quality replacements. For that use the set served me well. After testing out the set I bought a high quality 17 and 14. Wouldn’t have known which focal lengths worked well for me without the set. Good review.

I'm using a 16 inch dob,and the filter set works great for me. In order to see detail with filters I recommend a telescope 8 inch aperture and above so that the filter won't be quite as dim. But great video man I'm with you,my least filter is the dark red it just feels useless very dark.

hmmm..... I’ve had this very kit, and I gotta say that I completely disagree. I’ve used all of the eyepieces and especially the filters. While I agree that the eye relief is poor in the eyepieces below 17mm while wearing eyeglasses, but thats standard for all plossl eyepieces regardless of the manufacturer. Taking off my eyeglasses at the lower fl solved that problem until I needed a newer prescription. But that’s due to my age (much older than you), not the eyepieces. You can’t fault the kit for the low eye relief. It’s inherent to the plossl optical design at lower fl. Optically, the eyepieces are quite good, and perform well in in my 250mm dia. 1200mm fl Skywatcher Dob. Regarding the filters, I’ve seen the details as stated in the instructions. So I’m wondering about your telescope, the amount of observing experience you’ve had, your observing site, and how well your eyes were dark adapted when observing with this kit at the time this video review was first recorded. This kit is meant as a starter kit, and fullfills that purpose quite well. I gave it to my daughter once I upgraded to all 82 deg. explore scientific eyepieces and orion’s filter kit.
@Mrcloc4 жыл бұрын
But you can use the 17mm plus the barlow to get you 8.5mm, and it would be better to do the same with the 13mm to get 6.5mm. The 6mm and 8mm are redundant in the kit. I agree it's worth buying, even if only for the 17mm, 32mm, moon filter, and case.

Buy the Celestron kit, take out the 6, 8, and 13, and drop in the Expanse (or cheaper equivalent) 6, 9 and 15. At the moment the Celestron kit goes for around $180. If you buy just a 17mm, 32mm, 2x barlow, and a moon filter, you're already on about $140. You can't buy a case like that for $40. An eyepiece case is one of the most useful things I got for myself. You could maybe have mentioned that the Expanse do have caveats. But I agree, they're excellent.

Hey Slymin, Great review on this kit. I was about to pull the trigger and order it but decided to do a bit more research,,, what do you think of the Celestron 93230 8 to 24mm 1.25 Zoom Eyepiece? It has pretty good reviews on amazon and looked like it could save a lot of space/troubles with having so many different eye pieces. Any thoughts?
@AstroBlender8 жыл бұрын
+David Seastedt That's a good one. I especially like that one if you don't have a lot of room to carry eyepieces, and it gives pleasing views as well. The zoom eyepieces also give you a really good picture of what focal length eyepiece you like to observe with. That way when you are ready to buy really quality eyepieces you can buy them at the focal length you know that you like. I hope that helps!

This was interesting to watch, we bought this at about the same time and have the same opinions. Was wondering if you were going to give props to the 17mm and the 32mm and you did. Personally I've gotten a good amount of use from the filters.
@tahmidhossain0074 жыл бұрын
could you explain how you got the filters work? been struggling with those.
@chappyman9994 жыл бұрын
The filters are best used for planetary viewing. Different filters can assist in seeing different features on the planets. I've found a couple very useful for Jupiter and Mars.
@davidsussman7476 Жыл бұрын
This is an older video, and the Celestron eyepiece kit has gotten worse and pricier at $190. I avoided it, as it now gives you some bizarre inclusions:eyepieces at 4, 6, 9, 16, and 32mm. The 4mm will be too strong for most telescopes. But it also includes a 3x Barlow! Utterly useless and a ploy to trick customers into thinking that they’ll have super-powerful eyepieces, even though three of the resulting focal lengths are unusable. I agree that only the moon filter is helpful, and those can be purchased cheaply for $10 or so. At best, a person might find one of the color filters interesting or useful. My only nitpick with this video is the presenter’s criticism of the 6, 8, and 13mm eyepieces because of eye relief alone (it seems?). The plossl design has less eye relief at shorter focal lengths; that’s the optical reality of them. Little can be done about it. Usually, plossls offer consistent, clear, sharp views (at very high magnification, the views get dark and a bit fuzzy, but that’s true in general for all eyepieces), and plossls are very affordable. Their only other small drawback is the smaller apparent field of view, which is around 50 degrees. Overall, nice video, though.
@MartyInLa2 жыл бұрын
I've got a Celestron 9mm Plossl, ya the eye relief is terrible, as is the field of view. It's kind of good looking at details of the moon, and Saturn for the 30 seconds it will be in your field of view if you can find it.
@albro88536 жыл бұрын
I have a 5SE and It's really funny how I have absolutely no problem whatsoever with the 6mm, 8mm and 13mm eye relief. I am able to clearly see Saturn with any of them. The filters yes besides the moon they are not used very much. But to me they are just bonus. With all 6 eyepiece at that price it's a steal. My scope came with a 25mm, so I have: 32,25,17,13,8 and 6 mm, I am pretty much all set for any kind of viewing. Actually I am using quite alot the 8 and 13mm, if you want to look at Jupiter or Saturn and do not want to see a very tiny, that's the one you use. The case also is very nice. The barlow needs to be replaced though. So I would say this kit is worth it save for the Barlow. The eye relief is never has bad as he is mentionning... maybe on the 6 mm it's a little tougher but even so... The 8mm or 13 mm definitely has Zero eye relief issue. It's definitely a good kit for the price for beginners.

I'm WAY late to this party but I have a question . . . is the short relief a function of these particular lenses or is it a function of Plossls in general?

I wondered if it was my telescope that was out of focus. I found the 6 and 8 mm totally useless. Like looking in a kaleidoscope with a really dark fuzzy image and the fuzzy image keeps moving all over the place. I highly DON'T recommend those sizes. The eyepiece kit came with my telescope so it wasn't a waste of money but I will probably sell it and buy a few really good ones in 40, 32, and 25 and use the barlow if I want to get more magnification. I like the point you made about having the best on hand for showing people the most stunning images to get them excited because it's more disappointing for me when I show someone a disappointing image. Thanks for your review.

@johnjriggsarchery24577 жыл бұрын
Hi, everyone has their own take on things: I favor going with wide fields.. Like Explore Scientific in 82 degrees. Instead of having a lot of eyepieces, I would suggest two really good wide fields, whether ES, Orion, or Baader (they all have good eye relief), and then adding a Barlow. The Barlow in real terms doubles the number of eyepieces. I'm sorry, Plossl, but spend a little extra and have 2 wider fields that serve a lot of purposes. Heck, if you cant afford two good wide fields, get one along with a good quality Barlow. We can live without planetary filters, but you're right, Moon filters are a good thing.
@AstroBlender7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I always use my 2" eyepieces now. I have some of the older Explore Scientific 70 degree series eyepieces and they are great. I have used one of their 100 degree eyepieces, and wow... just incredible!

How do *these* celestron plossls compare to the celestron Omni? Those are also plossls, aren’t they?
@k.h.15873 жыл бұрын
Hard to say because both the kit and the omni have changed manufacturers over the years. The old kit that was 4 6 9 15 32 was made by GSO as were the older omni. The omni are fully multicoated and supposedly the kit plossls have lesser coatings. The current omni is made by synta and I have the 9 12 and 15 (and an older 40mm gso omni) and am pleasantly surprised. The 15 is really nice and and the gso 15 s had horrible edge issues, no sharp field stop and the current China made ones don't have that problem

Tell me what telescope focal length and diameter you used these items on. Tell me? Perhaps this was not the right set for your scope. What are you using them on scope wise? you could imagine that this set may work poor on some scopes but perhaps great on other scopes. What is you focal ratio:? tell me. Me, I buy the scope first and then try to find a MATCHING set of eyepieces that should work well with my scope specifics. After that I move to filters to meet my Observing needs. If these items were NOT matched well with your scope to begin with how can you give them a poor rating? You know how to choose eyepieces for YOUR Focal ratio and Focal length right? Do You? Each Telescope you own should practically have it's own set of Eyepieces. a few though may crossover depending on focal length. Not a biggie here, but More Info on the Scope you used here would have been better. Thanks. Keep it up.

Yes, these were used on a Celestron 8" Schmidt Cassegrain at f/10 and reduced at f/6.3, so focal length about 2032mm and 1280mm. Yes, I know how to select eyepieces for a specific telescope. At f/10 these eyepieces should perform fine, but the 6mm and 8mm weren't up to par for me. At f/6.3 the edges of the field of view have significant coma and oblong stars all the way up to the 17mm eyepiece. Perhaps they would work better in something even slower like a Celestron NexStar 4 SE at f/13. In my opinion though, an eyepiece that has distortions at f/10 isn't a very good eyepiece. Thanks and take care.

It's how much distance you can place your eye away from the eyepiece, to see the full field of view. Let's say if you have a eyepiece that has 10 millimeters of eye relief, that means you can place your eye 10 millimeters from the eyepiece to see the full field of view. Instead of putting your eye right up to the glass.

Dude lost all credibility when he said the expanse is better. Wider maybe, but sharpness and ghost reflections are much worse in an expanse and this has been known for a while. Forum schmoe plossl hate and the blind leading the blind is clearly influencing this. Clearly the lack of eye relief and difficulty of use is translating into poor views which are NOT the case. Seeing is NOT being taken into consideration here. There is a reason televue does not make a plossl smaller than 8mm and previously 7.4mm , and 8mm is pushing it but certainly useable. The 6mm does give good views if the seeing permits and the scope is cooled and collimated. Because a 6mm expanse has a bigger eye lens and a little more eye relief and a much wider field, it makes a more pleasurable experience, but in critical planetary observation the 6mm plossl is probably going to show more detail. 17mm plossls tend to be a sweet spot, but the 13 shouldn't be bad at all. Methinks the smaller lenses as well as the fact that the higher you go the softer it gets no matter what you are using, is influencing his perception of the quality of the view. These are made either by GSO or Synta who both make decent plossls, I find the synta (China) plossls to be a tad better than GSO (Taiwan) plossls in my experience but it is a subtle difference, and the GSO made 15mm plossls had edge issues so the older set of 4 6 9 15 32 that was GSO made is not as good as the 6 8 13 17 32 kit that I can't say for sure which one makes it since I have not been in the industry since 2011, but I suspect it is made by synta like the current omni plossls which were made by GSO in the past. Same applies to Orion Sirius and highlight which had a long period of being made by GSO, but the ones that come with their synta made scopes (25mm and 10mm) are made by Synta and I found them to be a tad sharper than the 26mm and 9mm sold individually made by GSO. In general I don't suggest 6mm and even 8mm plossls due to the same reasons, but if they are all you can afford, they do give textbook views (in most name brand ones, there are poor quality plossls out there now from off brands like svbony or some generic ones), and are only difficult to use due to the tiny lens and lack of eye relief. I find 12mm to be where a plossl starts to become easy enough to look through to not be a difficult experience.

This guy is just bashing this eyepiece kit he says it’s a bad kit but he doesn’t tell you a good one or compare it to anything

It's compatible, but i think after listening to the video that the best option would be to heed the advice, find what is needed and buy them separately!

*by 'them' i mean those items that will certainly be used! A decent Moon filter, light pollution filter and a good zoom eyepiece!
