From what I've learned its an issue with the oil return holes not being big enough so oil get left in the combustion chamber while running. Toyota fixed this in the later models 03+ by adding another hole, and the GT-S variants have a different engine altogether so it was never an issue with them. Apparently some people have taken their engines apart and drilled extra holes, but unless you know what you are doing I wouldn't recommend it. P.S. Your thumbnail is of an 03+ Celica which doesn't have the oil burning issue.

@Andrew Zorn in the uk we have a 't sport' variant, is this the gts equivalent?. Cheers

@@nmdpeaceout yes it’s equivalent to the gts, but you guys have a little bit more horsepower then us. I think the gts has 180, while the t sport has 190.

I had the issue on my 2001 gt automatic. It burned 1qt every thousand mi. I did a rebuild on the 1zz to see what I could find. The piston oil Ports where somewhat clogged, the piston rings where worn (but not bad for 140,000mi), and the thing that got my attention was the valve guide seals specifically the exhaust side. They were cooked. When I went to pull them out they crumbled like sand. Pretty sure I had oil pouring straight to the exhaust... Not sure though Anyway, it's fixed now. New pistons $89, rebuild kit $48. Plus two weeks of my time...

it is a well known fact that the140vvti up until 2002 facelift model have an issue with oil burn. the early engines allhad this fault due to oil drain holes in pistons blocking and oil rings gunking up. the factory redisigned the pistons on the facelift models. also the filter screen blocks on the 2 small internal block filters and causes issues. if you do regular changes, 3 to 5000 miles then your older engine will be fine. also seafoam or other oil additives are a good idea about 150 miles before an oil change as they liquify any carbon or gunge build up. this is then flushed out on oil and filter change. i have a 2001 140vvti with just 60000miles on it and it does use oil,but it runs smooth and the oil is clean,even when due for a change. if you have these issues you have to either get the 2003+ engine fitted or just keep on top of it. if you keep checking it weekly which takes 5minutes, its no big deal.
@briggaskin
@briggaskin 4 жыл бұрын
@Chris Ray in the uk we only had the oil burn problem until 2002 facelift model. On uk models the issue was sorted either under warranty or with a costly engine replacement. Maybe it depended on import stock levels in certain countries or certain engine batches.

As mentioned, there is a fix. 105000 miles and 5000 miles of frequent short trips before a change. Not sure, but the Toyota dealer said there was a transaxle leak and mentioned the fix. Both together were like $500 after I bought the car. Trust me, I run pizza in a GT on the weekends. 0 burn. Oil even looked clean at 5000 miles but I always do that or the recommended if less. 2003 Celica GT. The GT-S will blow up though. The 2zz is a bit problematic.

Same issue with my 00 mr2 spyder 1zz motor oil gone with in a week, I heard something about the precats failing than you start seing the oil consumption. I think there's a guy here on KZbin that explains the deal. I think drill extra holes in his pistons.

From what I have seen when opening up the valve cover on my turbo 2zz (yes I know he has the GT but the it has to do with the seals) there are circle seals that go around the coil pack tube opening. This can cause the oil to get through the plugs and ignite with the gas getting mixed with the spark. If this isn't the issue, the next one is getting oil in through air intake manifold (not really common on N/A cars but possible), and the third one are your piston rings not selling properly and letting oil in. Pretty much there's a leak somewhere that is causing oil to either be ignited with fuel+spark, or it's leaking out of the engine onto the road. Definitely use the recommended oil so it isnt evaporating or thinning out while under usage. other than those three things, i'm not sure what it could be for the 1zz. I would recommend a 2zz upgrade in the near future. Before you know it, you will have spent the same amount on oil rather than a gts. just my opinion! I know people have fixed this issued in the past. (I lurk on celica forums way to much haha) Good luck!

I have an 05 That was well cared for and is not all coked up with deposits on the inside of the engine. Despite this, at 160,000 mi it burns oil just like my 2001 GT did at 50,000 mi. Roughly about 1 quart every 5 to 600 mi when driven hard
@RetroTech27
@RetroTech27 8 жыл бұрын
Worth changing the PCV valve as a start as might help reduce oil getting into intake. Check engine by opening oil cap when running then look for blowby (excess pressure or even smoke). Long term either engine rebuild or swap for 2zz which would be more power and no oil issue. Or buy a GTS

2000 Toyota Celica Gt (Automatic) 190,000 miles. I go through about a quart every week. If not more. But I've heard there's some stuff you can buy at autozone that helps with the oil burn issue. It doesn't stop it but it definitely slows it down. I don't remember what its called but you can just ask someone who works there and they will help you find it. That's what I did.

The fix is to replace the rings and possibly pistons. The engine in the Scion TC and such had similar issue to the 1zz-fe. The dealerships are currently required to run a consumption test for qualifying vehicles. I believe the Celica is too old but it's worth finding out...

At first, I bought my 03 GT just cuz the 03+ bumpers were cooler looking to me (ricer alert!) It wasn't until a few months after owning it and relying on forums to help me fix it up was when I found out it was a small blessing in disguise. It's not that bad of a problem to have; just like a monthly payment on oil. At least it runs like you said lol

Basically the only way to fix the issue is a total engine rebuild because some of the spots where oil should be draining from the engine are too small and can get clogged if proper oil changes weren't/aren't done on the regular schedule.. I just purchased a 2002 GT and was made aware of the issue, however it also depends on what engine model you have because with the 02s with the new engine has fixed the problem

Hello upshift! I will tell you my opinion about this. I own a 2002 celica, which was bought in 2006, the car had the same oil issue and we were able to get a brand new engine from Toyota. We had to wait for them to send us an engine from Germany because the car was originally bought there. The warranty covered the cost of the engine, it was about 1300 euros i think. The new engine has been going for 6 years now with no problems at all. My last oil change was 5000 kilometers ago, and i checked the oil a few days ago, it was absolutely fine. So yes before buying make sure that it doesn't have any oil issues.. Mine is a 6 speed manual.

Hi Aron, I'm about to become the owner of a 2000 Celica GT manual shifted. I know the former owner (older couple) very good, he has allways been a mechanic. It has 178.00 km on the meter and i also asked him about the oil issue. He assured me it had never leaked a single drup of oil ever. If it did id get the car for free. So is it known to be that not EVERY celica has this problem or is it just luck? I know it's allways been taken very well cared off. Its in top shape, still totally stock and no scratch to see or sound to hear. I cant wait to own it! I've watched a good bunch of your vids and they realy helped making the choise to buy it. It's expensive. You have to take off the head and oil pan. Take out the pistons and clean the ring lands. Clean out the oil drain back holes in the oil ring and then drill 4 more holes in that area equally spaced. Put it all back together with new gaskets and head bolts and you should be good.

my friend i have good news for you- there is a fix! i have a 2000 celica gt, burnt oil even worse than yours and after the fix 400km NO OIL CONSUMPTION. you have 2 options: engine rebuild : new gaskets and piston rings(buy those that go into 2003 celica), if neccessary connecting rod bearings. cost in europe was around 1500 eur with work done as i'm not a mechanic. i think is US the parts are way cheaper so around 1000$ you can get it done. best to use OEM toyota parts. i actually bought them from US they were cheaper with shipping than buying here lol 2zzge swap: you can get engines imported from japan with a 6 speed manual for around 3000$ in US companies. i was opting to do this but shipping was 1200$ so no way in europe. if you decide to fix your engine i can help with info

My wife has a 2001 Celica GT automatic. ODO 265,000km. Burns oil like a pig. Lots of black smoke out the tailpipe if I go over 2000rpm. But I top it off every fill up. My mechanic said the valve O-rings are the culprit. But its not worth fixing due to the age of the vehicle. Just drive it. Toyotas last forever.

I have a 2000 Toyota Celica GT. I live about 125 miles from home to college and everytime I travel between the two, I burn about from half to a full quart of oil. It's getting ridiculous. Hopefully no scoring has happened on the cylinder walls.

215k and still no oil burning. Personally I think it depends more on how well the car has been taken care of in its lifetime. If the previous owner has done regular oil and filter changes than you should be fine.

lol "fix". it was basically a rebuild without pulling the crank. I ran my celica for 50,000 plus the 30-40k the guy before me had it burning a quart every 1000-2000 miles. 180,000ish the cat was shot and needed replacing. You can get away with just dumping oil through it for a long time.

I've read that checking spark plugs could actually help you find which cylinder could be burning the oil. As far as an actual fix. I have yet to find one my 2001 Toyota celica GT had that issue until I was driving down the high way and I stepped on it and boom my engine blew so I got a 2005 engine in my celica so I no longer have that issue. So id say invest in a newer engine. If you'd like I could make a video of my celica !

Hi! I would recommend you spend the extra $1000 on the GTS. You'll appreciate the extra horsepower, steering wheel shifters, sound system, and brakes. Plus you won't have to worry about having the oil burn issue. Although, I'd recommend a manual over an automatic any day. Good luck!

I got a new car because it can't be driven over 35mph. I still wish I could find a fix for it. I love the car. It seems like the only fix is a new engine though.

Amber that sounds like a coil pack issue- my car did all of those things and it just needed a new coil pack. I'd get it diagnosed and see if that's the issue!

This problem also affected the '98-'02 Corolla, as it had the same engine. The problem is defective oil control rings on the pistons, which Toyota changed for '03. There is no easy fix; it's either rebuild it or swap in a later engine. I have two '03 GTs (both auto) and neither one burns a drop of oil (and both have over 160k miles)

My 2002 had that issue before I bought it, the previous owner or the one before that started taking the motor apart. That's how I got it, and it's still that way now. Using it as a parts car, but if the motor was good, it would be much better than the 2003 I'm driving now. I really don't know how much the 2003 burns, I only drive it like 12 miles a week.
