Scotty, I have a 2007 Pontiac Torrent that burns a lot of oil, so I decided to replace the PCV valve, but on this vehicle, the PCV valve doesn't just pull out, there is some kind of bracket holding it in. I've seen some videos on youtube where the bracket holding the pcv is actually riveted to the valve cover. Does that mean that these pcv valves aren't meant to be replaced?

I feel so smart my car is doing that right now I was so scared and was saying there goes my head gasket. Over 6 months, 5 different mechanics, new plugs, coils, MAF, random catalytic efficiency codes, etc. And they kept telling me my car must be burning oil (though no signs) and I shouldn't bother. Last night got flashing engine light and massive misfires. Plug 3 was all gummed up. Again, engine must be burning oil and has to be piston rings. I'm done for they said. Found THIS video. Bought a valve and brought it back to the guy and told him to check. Original valve was SHOT. Probably hasn't been changed in 7 years (freaking Nissan!) Changed the valve. Changed the hose. Changed the 2 plugs. It's been only 12 hours, but it's running like a new car. No misfires. No stuttering. No codes! Thanks for the video! Probably saved me thousands of dollars and a crap ton of stress!!!!

My Sentra was smoking horribly. I found this video and was sooooo skeptical. Nothing I try for car repairs is ever an easy, cheap fix. However, I found a pcv valve for $2 and put it on. BAM!! My Sentra used to smoke really bad too. Like, two packs a day. Finally I was like 'look bitch, I ain't buying your cigarettes no more. You need to get on the patch or something.' Then it started taking Chantix and like three days later I went out in the garage and it was dead. Committed suicide.

I cleaned it up myself and I was still able to hear the noise it makes which proved that it was working. Once I placed it back and did an oil change. Its been ten days and my car hasn't lost oil yet. I got an 1976 F100 6 cyl a long time ago. It was running bad and had no power. The PCV valve in the top of the valve cover and the entire hose from it to the intake was clogged with oil deposits. I cleaned the valve (I was on the road) and used a stick to remove the clogged gunk from the pipe. It ran much better and got me home. I had a 1966 Ford Falcon that quit running in the middle of nowhere. After checking a few things I knew I wasn't getting fire to the plugs. I popped off the distributor cap and the very end of the metal on the rotor cap was gone, broke clean off! From the rivet to the center (coil wire contact) was fine but there wasn't anything on the end to send the spark to the distributor ends of the plug wires. Luckily my dad taught me to ALWAYS put the old tune-up parts in the trunk when I did a tune-up, that saved the day! I put the old rotor cap on and went on my way! Saved me a tow truck call, especially since cellphones hadn't been invented yet.

I really enjoy your videos. We are about the same age. I'm 66. I've been a gear head since before I started driving. I never was a mechanic by trade but worked in Dealerships in the sales end. People ask me if I am a mechanic and I tell them, no but I'm a decent parts changer and have some common sense. As badly as I don't want to say anything that can be read as profiling, I think that the people in my generation were and still are much more in tune with their car. This sin't everyone, by a long shot. I tell people that when I started driving, I bought my own car, paid my own insurance and had the money by the time I was 16. Naturally that is next to impossible today but my point is this. My first car was a 1953,. It had a 6 volt electric system, no seat belts, an AM tube type radio that took 5 minutes to warm up. It had vacuum wipers. I won't try and explain vacuum to them but just that the more you pushed on the gas, the less they worked. It had a three speed transmission on the column with overdrive. It didn't have power steering or disk brakes or power anything. We had to learn to drive, not just point. Almost all highways were 2 lane. You were forced to pay attention because you knew it was serious stuff. To get a license you had to do all the things you do today, plus know how to give hand signals. My second car was a 62 Nova. It was 5 years old and I was a senior in high school. It didn't have seat belts either, same radio. My point is this. We learned how to keep cars running because our parents were raised in the depression and feared it happening again. Cars were a lot simpler back then, but even today, if people take a personal interest in their car and learn the things that they can do themselves, it can save a lot of money. My dad owned a sling of service stations and taught me two things about cars. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, but little problems turn into really big ones. You have to have your car, so when something needs to be done, know what is important, but keep it maintained. It is always cheaper to keep a car running than to get one running. Sorry for rambling.

IMPORTANT!!!!! If your General Motors engine's PCV valve is enclosed in a "chamber", make sure when you replace the PCV valve, you're also adding o-ring "sleeves" to it! The new one doesn't come with the O-rings so match some at OReilly first. Without the o-ring sleeves completing a controlled air path, air squirts around the valve itself (throwing error codes doing so) and you can't pass emissions testing!

I have a 2006 Honda Element Ex AWD. I purchased it 11 months ago and had my mechanic check it over and he said it was in great shape, plus I have every maintenance record since day one and it's had excellent care. I noticed today that it was a quart low after driving only 1200 miles, and I haven't seen anything leaking or smoking. So I went to Honda today to purchase an OEM pcv valve for $41.00 and will install. I pray it's the solution. Thanks Scotty, you're the best 😁

I know this video is approaching five years old but it surely helped me today because for years I always thought this valve was the device that sat down in my valve cover gasket. My old car has been burning oil for quite some time. Perhaps this simple and cheap fix has been the culprit all along (because I was only changing the top piece that rattles). Thanks 😎👍

Just a note.. The PCV on the Honda Civic(EG series) are made of plastic, and you can't unscrew them. You have to pull it out with clamps. And when you do, it will most likely BREAK into pieces. I have no idea why they made out of plastic.. So far I replaced mine twice and both times they broken into pieces.
@elydiaz1031
@elydiaz1031 5 жыл бұрын
i changed them on my civics... none broke. it helps if you spray some wd40 or other lubricant on the ring of the valve prior to pulling it out. a lil dab of the same product on the new pcv should help installing n removing in the future. beck n arnley are sturdier.

My 2001 Lexus ES300 was blowing out a ton of white smoke and burning oil, like 1/3 quart every other week. I observed tailpipe smoke on cold starts ONLY. Once running for ~30-45 seconds it was totally clear. It was also only 4~5 days per week. So it was not consistent in my case... It had good and bad mornings. I took out the PCV valve, soaked it in brake cleaner for 2-3 hours and scrubbed it inside and out with a long bristle brush until the runoff was clean/clear. There was a LOT of old oil clogging it up inside, or at least partially blocking it, and I think this was the cause of the intermittency. Majorly keeping my fingers crossed. Hoping this will carry me over for a few days until I can get a new valve. I am pretty sure this is the OEM PCV, I dont think the previous owner ever changed it. Hoping for the best and thanks Scotty.

You can test if it is a PCV valve. Take off the oil cap and see if its stil burning oil. If the PCV valve is stuck closed or clogged now you are venting the pressure into the atmosphere.

there four ways to consume oil 1-a leak 2-clogged ventilation system ( PCV ) 3- valve stem seals 4- piston rings-bore gouging-piston ring land wear before goint thru an engine rebuilding process, it is advisable to go thru the diagnostic process to my experience, in modern engine, the last cause of oil consumption is the piston rings and related parts, more than three quarter of times , I saved the engines with a replacement of valve stem seals in the worst cases and the engines performed satisfactory.

@jacquespoirier9071

+John Feltcher a good diagnostic point is when smoke is apparent on start, when using the engine brake then reaccelerate or when shifting at moderate to high RPM, the first thing to see is the valve stem seals, when the smoke density increases with the increasing of the engine RPM, the chances are good that the oil control rings are worn or filled with combustion disposits. when oil control rings are new, the contact with the cylinder bore is a fine line. When the ring wears, the contact widens, the capability to wipe oil decreases and oil burning increases When the ring is so worn that the expander touches the cylinder bore, there is no longer oil control by the oil ring and only rings designed primary for sealing compression can contain oil. On Chrysler engines, very often the engine burned oil and the compression rings were in good condition, the oil rings were filled with disposits of tetraetyl lead. On Ford and GM engine, often the fire ring were broken and fire ring groove were very worn too. probably than Honda engines suffers the same problem than Ford and GM engines.

I love your videos. You have inspired me. I even got a 1997 ford f150 and fixed it up a lot.I checked for head gasket leaks and none. also it runs very strong making me think there are no valves or piston leaks. I juts found out that there is a problem with the oil. it seems to be disappearing. I am pretty shur i replaced the pcv valve. there is no to little smoke if any coming from the tail pipe. I also pulled the pcv valve out and when running it i put my finger over the end and the extremely large amount of vacuum sucked it to the top easily. Is there anything else that can cause the oil to disappear because i don't see any leaks on the drive way. I don't drive much but want a dependable car. Thank you so much. You saved my mom 900+ because of you helping me to help her fix the catalytic converter using lacquer thinner < you are awesome please never stop revving your engines>

Check for oil pan or a rear main seal leak. The 302 bronco i have, thats mainly wear it leaks from. If its leaking from either of those 2, the pan and bottom of transmission near where it mates to the engine will most likely have very fresh oil residue, And you're gonna have to remove the transmission to service either of those seals. So pretty much plan on replacing a lot of stuff down there other than just seals. On a manual transmission the pilot bearing, rear main seal and transmission shaft seal is just a few extra stuff i replace along with doing a Clutch job. You're gonna have to remove the transmission to do any of those, so just do them all so you wont have to worry later on.
