I don’t really know where you get your intel from. But Celine is a designer house that’s been around since like the mid 1940’s… They have had two logos since then, one the famous little elephant. And the other the two C’s leaning on the arc de Triomphe in Paris which the founder Celine Vipiana designed herself back in the early 70’s. Most ultra French designer brands have in one way or another utilised letters of their names in logos like LV, Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent, YSL, KL, Karl Lagerfeld and the list goes on… So that they now use the same logo when making perfumes again, it does not seem very strange to me… it is a very classic super Parisian brand. Who have perhaps not been as focused on the American market as Chanel or it’s likes have. So it has perhaps not been as known to that audience. But to give the impression that it’s a completely new brand who are just copycating other brands is a bit of a stretch to me… The brand Celine has always stood for very classic very conservative ideas. So their perfumes are completely in line with their brand and traditions. One can like their stuff or not. That is up for anyone’s taste or ideas. But one cannot accuse Celine of being new and ripping off others logos. It’s true that both Chanel and Celine have made use of their letters, but it has never been suggested even by Chanel that Celine ripped off their logo as they just followed a tradition that started even before Chanel. So I can’t really se why one should make such a claim now?!?

When I first smelled them in-store I was also not particularly impressed. It wasn't until I sat down and really lived with them did it click. Hedi has a design philosophy where the clothing is incomplete without a wearer, and I see the same thing happening with these fragrances. They're not meant to be some standalone piece to be judged in a vacuum. Once it is paired with the individual who matches its character and temperament, it creates a the whole is greater than the sum of its parts moment for the presentation of that individual wearing the fragrance. I treat fragrances like fashion accessories that help modulates one's presentation like an olfactory Instagram filter. I am not a vintage fragrance lover, nor do not particularly enjoy projecting a very challenging smell for my presentation. The criteria I use to judge whether a fragrance is worthy to be added to my wardrobe seem to be on the polar opposite side of your criteria. I enjoy a certain understated elegance and effortlessness in the fragrances I wear. Celine's olfactory aesthetic represents the now, and updates classical ideas for the modern young luxury fragrance consumer like me. Rather than wanting to project the image of being the "fragrance guy", I want to come off as smelling effortlessly good, luxurious, but with a sense of ease. Because that is the epitome of sophistication. Having your fragrance blare like a foghorn is anything but luxurious or elegant. That is more nouveau riche, if anything, and incredibly trashy and distasteful. From the onset you were already biased against the brand, and you expected to be let down. If you looked into what the Celine Triomphe logo's origins were about, you wouldn't have that interpretation that "they took the Chanel C's and twisted them in opposite ways". It is funny how smug you were about it too thinking you had a gotcha moment. You say you want to be fair, but you come across as anything but fair. It is so transparent that your agenda is shilling that vintage/challenging = good, and anything that doesn't smell like vintage/challenging = bad. While I will not fault your stance, I think it is quite myopic to think that's the only approach to perfumery. It is obvious that you struggle with being able to step into the point of view of someone else, since you fail to understand the perspective of non-vintage lovers or those who don't prefer challenging fragrances. It is like music. Different generations and audiences have their own aesthetic/taste. Your video on Black Tie and Bois Dormant have been incredibly biased so far and I wasn't going to comment for your engagement until you said something that I found useful in this video. Now for me to be fair to you, your specific choice to use "chalky" was something I didn't consider when experiencing that dusty quality. I think chalky is incredibly fitting for Bois Dormant since it is inspired by the suits by Saville Row tailors, and they often use tailoring chalk during the tailoring process. Chalky is very fitting, so I thank you for helping me make that connection. You're welcome for the engagement.

Interesting comment. There are always two sides (or more) of a story. I love Celine fragrances but struggle with their performance. Went through a decant of Black Tie and loved every minute of it but I used it up really fast. Now when I tried it again I found it boring. My taste is changing and I find Celine’s fragrances unchallenging. Very easy to like and to wear. Not worth the high price to me, but would love of a bottle of Nightclubbing☺️. Tried Bois Dormant yesterday in store and it was disappearing from my skin within 30 minutes.
@immortellefragrance4145 Жыл бұрын
@@thehonestperfumereviewer6336 Although I hate the high price, I'm also happy since it helps create more of a barrier for someone smelling exactly like me. Bois Dormant is pitched perfectly for its "character". It is like a love affair abandoned while there’s still heat, before its course has run, remains an unwieldy hurdle in the heart. You’re left with an ache for something not fully savoured when it was safe in your grasp. The passion gnaws while the regret sharpens. Memories lodge like a bullet in muscle; wistful what-ifs hobble your hesitant steps away from the scene of the crime. Did you blow it? Did they? Or did you both just narrowly save yourselves? Bois Dormant embodies this quiet force of longing. Green, bitter juniper is soothed by powdery clouds of iris butter. There’s an earthy rasp of vetiver roughing up cedar’s comforting smoothness. The trail persists in your wake, subtly, long after you were first lured by its soft voice. Muffled and melancholy, this ‘sleeping wood’ conjures the whisper of leaves on a forest floor as you slip between autumn trees, their branches nearly bare. It’s the smell of paper covered in the scrawl of a love letter. The words may yet have power, but they no longer apply to you. If I had to use a song to associate with it, I might choose this rendition of Music When The Lights Go Out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpCnZXWfftp7fq8

Crazy timing as Dior Homme silver stem was my SOTD. It was in the 50’s and overcast so felt like perfect time to wear. I have zero interest in Celine as I always thought they seemed like they were trying to be another Chanel. 9 times out of 10 the original of an idea is the best. Glad to hear you confirm my bias. 🍻

100% confirmed... not only that... but they are an LVMH owned brand trying to give off that heir of luxury... it was LVMH that destroyed the old school French Family vibe of quality Guerlain had going on ... dont really trust LVMH to be honest

Excellent video Ramsey. I’m actually a fan of Celine fragrances but completely agree that the Slimane/Dior Homme vibes are undeniable. The DNA is in every single one of their fragrances (powdery Iris/orris and vanilla) Spoiler alert: Black Tie = Celine’s version of Dior Homme Intense in my opinion.

While I should be fair in that I've never smelled Dior Homme Intense. The logical connection, based on lore, is that Black Tie should be the spiritual successor of Hedi's Eau Noire. It also smells the part too. It captures the syrupy sweetness of Eau Noire, and both make my stomach growl if I wear them on an empty stomach.
@RamseytheRam Жыл бұрын
@@immortellefragrance4145 i would take eau noire 100 times out of 100 over black tie
@immortellefragrance4145 Жыл бұрын
@@RamseytheRam The fact you never thought to bring up Eau Noire is not inspiring much confidence in your review of Black Tie. At first I was wanting to be charitable and assumed you only smelled Bois d'Argent, and never smelled Eau Noire before. The link between Black Tie and Eau Noire is so obvious that it practically slaps you in the face that Black Tie is Eau Noire's spiritual successor. While you would personally take Eau Noire, and I can't fault you since I have the original "cologne" formulation myself, soon after Hedi left Dior they banished it from stores and relegated it to limited distribution because it was too polarizing for the customers they were targeting. I can't tell if it is willful ignorance, or genuine ignorance, that you don't realize that if people don't want to buy and wear them, the whole project has failed. The modern luxury consumer would take Black Tie over Eau Noire any day, and that's the cold hard facts. Hedi polished away all the polarizing facets of Eau Noire and made it more airy and accessible for the modern luxury fragrance consumer. I find Black Tie a lot "easier to wear" than Eau Noire. I feel like I have to really been the "mood" in order to "pull off" Eau Noire. Depending on how you spray, and wear it, it is really easy to get nose blind to it. Shoving your nose directly to your hand/wrist is definitely not going to give you the best experience with it. I was going to write it off completely, since I already had Eau Noire, until I tried spraying it on the back of my ears instead. But even if you do that, I'm confident this olfactory aesthetic is just not what you're personally into.

Hi Ramsey! Have been very much into fragrance for 4 years and don’t have the history on perfumes that might be copied etc. But I hear you saying quite often that something ”was inspired by” or that a frag is his or her ”take” on a fragrance. Sounds like you are talking about something positive, maybe not quite as positive as creating totally new but still. Where do you draw the line between to be inspired by something or just copying it? Love the Celine DNA but wish they had a better performance and pricepoint. Will not pay those kind of prices for such simple beauty.

Thats a great question ... I guess its subjective on one hand where that line is drawn... also based on your experience. If you dont know Rochas Femme you could never think VC&A Gem smells like it right? I hate the house of Celine... at least so far... i have more samples to discuss on the channel 🙂

La Peau Nue and Black Tie were the ones that caught my attention because while they weren't original, I feel like they're very good examples of what they are (Orris dominant floral and Amber Vanilla respectively). Outside of those 2, I feel like most of them are good but for a collector/enthusiast like myself they seem redundant. That being said I do find Eau de Californie and Reptile to be awful hahaha.

@immortellefragrance4145 Жыл бұрын
@@Once_WuZi The "community" by and large despise Celine. There is however a vocal minority in the "community" that adore Celine. It is the people outside the "community" that actually resonate with Celine's olfactory aesthetic. The people outside the "community" represent a way bigger slice of the actual retail luxury fragrance consumers, than people in the "community". Their opinions, and wallets, shape the landscape. While I consider the Celine fragrances to have a unique voice and character, it is undeniable that they represent a very modern approach to luxury fragrances that also appeals to the Asian sensibilities.

I thought you described it perfect. Bois Dormant is very disappointing, but I am a fan of the brand. I feel like Menardo made Black Tie and its my fave from the brand , Parade is a very well done citrus thats easy to wear (not original and feels overpriced but still quality), and Rimbaud is a more modern version of the classic Caron Pour un Homme. I own those three, the other samples you have dont interest me much with the exception of Eau de Californie , thought its pretty good
