Great assessment! What you refer to as melisma is known in operatic circles as "fioritura", or 'flowery', decorative singing. It's a testament to how secure her vocal technique is, the breath support and control, which allows her the flexibility to pull off that type of melisma/fioritura vocalism. If you binge watch enough of Celine's backstage or behind the scenes videos, you'll see Celine's talent manifest in another specific type of singing that requires great flexibility...yodeling! As funny as it sounds, it truly does show her skill. And while there is no video here on youtube, I've also once heard Celine playfully sing an operatic Rossini aria's fioritura passage. It blew my mind. Placido Domingo, the famous operatic tenor, once remarked that she has the talent to sing opera if she so chooses. Celine is truly a unique, stand-out vocalist, the likes of which we have never heard before. Your labeling of her as 'legendary' cannot be more appropriate.

When I watched this live back in '96, I knew beforehand she was going to perform, so I made sure my VCR was set to record. I then was able to watch it over and over again until KZbin was invented. :-)

Can you guys believe that during the last minute while hitting the last long note, she was having a major chest pain (that had started either at the start or before but was not as bad as towards the end ) and thought she was having a heart attack? I read her biography "my life, my dream" (French translation ) and she talked about this performance. She was put to rest for a few weeks if I remember well. But I mean: she had billions of people watching her live. In other words, most people on the planet? Her body pretty much wanted to shut down to obligate her to rest. The way she described it in her book, it pretty much sounded like a heart attack even though if was probably due to stress, pressure and fatigue. I think she actually fell down to the ground in the back stage right after this performance from being so weak. She's got so much control, it's unreal.

Miss Celine is so underrated by people. She is the best in my opinion and should be on every best singer list put out. I understand that some people don't always like her choice of songs but this voice is undeniable. So proud she is Canadian and a damn nice person. I had taped it on my VCR while watching it live and listened to it for years later. The days before KZbin haha. I remember Celine was performing at the opening ceremony and Gloria Estefan was doing the closing ceremony. It has to be one of the best live performances in my opinion.
