THIS VIDEO IS A RECONSTRUCTION OF THE FOLLOWING SITUATION IN FLIGHT:
04-AUG-2024. A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 (B38M), registration N8889Q, performing flight SWA3204 / WN3204 from Chicago Midway International Airport, IL (USA) to Miami International Airport, FL (USA) was about 80 miles north of Palm Beach International Airport when the flight crew donned oxygen masks, declared an emergency, reported smoke in the cabin and decided to divert to Palm Beach International Airport, FL (USA). Later the pilots reported that there was a fire caused by the cell phone battery and the fire was extinguished. Subsequently they decided to continue their flight to Palm Beach Airport. The airplane landed safely on runway 10 left and continued taxi to the gate.

HOW I DO VIDEOS:
1) I monitor media, airspace, looking for any non-standard, emergency and interesting situation.
2) I find communications of ATC unit for the period of time I need.
3) I take only phrases between air traffic controller and selected flight.
4) I find a flight path of selected aircraft.
5) I make an animation (early couple of videos don’t have animation) of flight path and aircraft, where the aircraft goes on his route.
6) When I edit video I put phrases of communications to specific points in video (in tandem with animation).
7) Together with my comments (voice and text) I edit and make a reconstruction of emergency, non-standard and interesting situation in flight.

This is an example of why we're not supposed to pack anything Li-ion batteries in our checked bags!!! If they catch fire in the cabin, they can be extinguished. If they catch fire in the cargo bays, we better pray 🙏 they have a good smoke detection system, fire suppression system, and a really close airport to get down to fast!! Awesome job by this flight crew and ATC!! ❤

The batteries are not really "hazmat". All they do is erupt in fire now and then.

To be fair, there are literally billions of Li-ion batteries in use and problems with them are very rare all things considered. You can't eliminate all risk from anything

It amazes me how many times the EMERGENCY Aircraft is distracted from the issue at hand by repeatedly answering the same question over and over and over. They will one day distract an full plane to it's demise by getting shoe sizes of any handicapped infant on oxygen with a blue pacifier carrying hazardous materials. I offer a solution: Side band Squak NOS and current fuel based on verified data on same system giving data on NOS (number of souls on board) and live current fuel all verified by Base\Airline, Flight Crew, Ticketing\Booking, and flight computer or other live fuel sensor data# - sounds hard but I could do it or anyone reading this understanding signals planes maintain\emit. ONLY emitting in-circle public data such as NOS and fuel I digress

right!!!! Sometimes multiple times, and 100 computers in the system must know this info. have the fire service look it up on a special website. What are they going to do? , hold back some trucks? It's a 737, plan accordingly. Plus, it will be hours before they really need a head count, if something bad happens anyway

It’s ridiculous and someday it will cause a real problem! They need to change the protocol or something, perhaps record the souls, infants and hazmat as part of the a taxi or takeoff checklist and have it readily available to the pilots at all times, on display etc. Same with fuel and time conversion, it should be readily available and in the same place as the aforementioned. Really, the pilots should be able to just press a button to convey the info to ATC.

I feel like they could get NOS from company before the emergency aircraft is even on final. I’m fairly certain it’s part of the gate agents paperwork. As far as the fuel remaining, a simple computer program could give a close enough Talley for sequencing and rescue/fire suppression. If the Aircraft just departed, it’s gonna have X fuel based on where it was going plus company policy divert/excess. ARF and ATC would both benefit from a simplified system for fuel management.

Aviate, navigate, communicate in that order. If the pilots were task saturated, then they would not be expected to answer all of these questions. Even in emergencies, there are procedures that must be followed. And it's "its" - "it's" is a contraction of "it is".

@@baddrivingnyc I think the point you’re (contraction of you are) missing, which is hard to believe since you appear to know everything, is that the current “procedure” seems flawed and likely a relic of time when the “communicate” part from your hackneyed phrase was done with much less technology than (not then) that which is available now.

An airtight box would create a bomb. And storing 100+ devices in a single container means the rest will catch fire when a single device goes up.

They need to be prepared on the ground. Emergency vehicles for fire etc. Souls in case they landed and need to evaluate the AC.

It's only a matter of time before a battery fire takes down a plane. Someone will violate the checked bag ban and ignite a fire. And of course a ban on these batteries on planes will never happen because convenience must come before safety.

@@N1120A Of course. Batteries are everywhere. My point is that the risk is considered minimal but it isn't zero and these fires happen a lot even if still a very small percentage in the scheme of things. And we aren't going to ever get rid of all risks but usually the main reason is convenience. But given planes are flying gasoline and electrical systems there will always be risk.

it already happened in asia before, so they take it more seriously there. they check checked baggage thoroughly in china, your bags will not fly with batteries in them

​@@N1120AHow are they stored? The batteries in the 787 are now mounted in a box that separates the cells and can vent in case of a thermal runaway. Such system would not be very convenient for cellphones and laptops.
