This is the only "how to hold the cello" video I've found that addresses where the bouts should be relative to the knees. It's exactly what I really needed to know.

I am a middle school strings teacher and I am watching videos with teaching techniques. I really appreciate your comment about how to set the cello on the knees, and above the right knee. I will add that to my teaching for sure. Thank you.

Very helpful video. I have been playing for years. I realized however that the basics mean a great deal as far as sound quality goes. I've been watching all manner of people (some famous) set up to sit with the cello now... hoping to find a position that works with me :)

Hilariously, my favorite 'cello chair' so far is my goat milking stanchion. It is the perfect height, and surprisingly comfortable. :P

It seems unnatural and uncomfortable to have the point of the bout digging into your left knee. That's what my first teacher (a violinist, not a cellist) taught me. It's better to just rest the cello *onto* your left knee (i.e., with the knee behind it). This is secure enough because the middle of the other bout naturally rests against your other knee. At least that's what I do.
@Learn2playCello

And you are not alone. I encourage all my students to secure the cello between the knees. Observe professional orchestra cellists on KZbin or at a concert. You'll see that occasionally one will rest it on the knee but the overwhelming majority secure it between the knees.

This is a really good video for someone who is learning how to play. He is right about how it is only a little different for women setting up the cello on your body. I like how he tells us with the spine should be straight and with the height of the chair whether it is right or wrong. The only thing that is negative about this video is that he said that the angle you have the cello at is different for all people. Yes. What if it is a little bit easier for someone to have it a little higher than their sternum. I was taught that as long as I was comfortable where the position was at but it wasn't too high or low, I was doing fine.

Thank you so much for this video! I’ve always strained my right shoulder when playing, but never been able to figure out why. Now I realize it’s because my posture was off. Thanks a ton!

I just tell people to put the C string tuning peg by their left ear.

Also make a C shape with the left hand with the thumb opposing the middle finger. I have them change elbow height to switch strings while I bow their hand and bow perpendicular to the length of the string and demonstrating dynamics, sollbuto, staccato, legato, ponticello, etc. The student has to feel the flex of fingers, wrist and elbow while not moving the shoulder. Now they can practice on their own.

I find if I put the C peg next to my ear, and I'm sitting up straight, then I know exactly where to position the cello when playing or just sitting at rest.
@kennethslavett1177
@kennethslavett1177 9 ай бұрын
The cello needs to be held leaning slightly towards the right. This makes it easier to play on the upper two strings which are played on more frequently. If it leans to the left, you have to reach further to the left which makes playing with power more difficult.

Thank you so much! I was looking at my performances and I noticed that my cello position Is much more different than the other cellos in my class. I was worried that I messed up the most basic cello skill ever XD

It's a video about holding the cello properly, not about human anatomy. IMO, 'chest' would be a better term to use anyway.

6:18 learning to reposturing myself from this video has made my performance better. My old posture had the middle part behind the cello on my sternum and my instrument held horizontally.

since everyone's legs and torsos are differente, following this indications strictly will make you fail. You should try to play on differente lenghts and contact points and feel how your left arm fall on the air confortably, then take that line and put the fingerboard following it That´s why you will find great cellist with the cello not on the sternum or withouth the knees with the "perfect" touch on the sides

Be careful of cheap piano benches, they normally don't have the fine height adjustment we associate with piano benches.

the problem for me is my freaking breast!! i am a big woman for a young age, the problem is my breast are big tendency both of my shoulders are higher than the correct measure. and it hurts(right shoulder) to the point that i stop in the middle of my piece.. it so hard... 😭

Make sure you are not lifting your bow shoulder while you play. So often students use one set of muscles to hold their arm/shoulder up and then another set of muscles to push the bow down. They are constantly fighting themselves until everything hurts. Watch the video on a natural bow stroke and see if it helps.
