Hi Billy: The names of the bones of the finger are distal phalanx, middle phalanx and proximal phalanx( distal to proximal). The respective joints are DIP(distal interphalangeal joint), MIP(middle phalangeal joint) and the MCP( metacarpal joint) or knuckle. The thumb is slightly different with only a DIP joint and a MCP joint. Carl Geyer, MD.

I've been looking sooo long for this kind of MULTI-POV bow hold thumb position tutorial. Other fingers are easier to keep track of with help of a mirror, but not the thumb 🥹 So thank you very much!! ❤ very helpful! 🏆

Thanks, I have just taken up the cello again after 45 years. My hands are pretty decrepit. 🥺😱🤣 My short pinky on the bow hand keeps locking. This will help. Thumb and short pinky in the string hand also locks. I found I didn't have the stretch of strength anymore for a full size cello so I am practicing on a 3/4 size.

I changed my bow hold. I watched a video by Pablo Ferrandes and I realized he also felt pain -- after that, he changed his bow hold, and his thumb isn't anymore on this awkward position either, and the pain was gone and grip became better. I think all Cellists must watch that video too. I wish I knew that before. This story of the thumb position started with Casals. I don't think it should apply to everyone

so, what does being on the tip of the thumb give you?

When I try this bow hold I feel like my fingers are constantly slipping down the bow towards the hair, unless I lock my thumb, which causes a lot of pain with continuous playing. Is there a trick anyone can recommend to 1. Stop the habit of locking, or 2. Stop the sliding?

Appreciate this video a ton, didn’t realize my pink was supposed to supper the weight of the bow. When I’m playin the tip, of my pinky ends up balancing in the top of the bow and that makes my wrist hurt.

Your bow grip looks nearly identical to my violin bow grip. . . BUT my bow slides over horizontal strings. What happens to your hand when you play on vertical - ish strings?

My thumb and pinky is feeling sharp pain I don't get it. I play guitar and piano effortlessly, so it's not an injury. Can't seem to find the sweet spot.
