The outskirts of San Diablo, NV, typically referred to as ‘The Wasteland’, have been the home to many tragedies and conquests. A rural desert landscape consisting of rugged mountain ranges, toxic Cacti, and aged “giant” palm trees. During the assembly of the United Cargo System, the small city of San Diablo saw a large migration of people seeking new opportunities in a new environment.
San Diablo became the largest and most influential ‘port’ city- a city where the United Cargo System trains loaded and unloaded. Quickly rising form a population of around 12,000 to 2.8 Million. A dramatic change came with it, as well as many stories of lives being lost and families being seperated while attempting to migrate to San Diablo.
The most popular setting for these stories, The Wasteland, has earned a reputation of being an eerie, desolate area of land that claims the souls of those who venture too deep into it. Many local accounts tell of people hearing faint guitar playing and whistling traveling through the wind. As well as the ghosts of packs of wild stallions traveling in the distance. One man even told the story of his survival and a lone horse carrying him back to the San Diablo wall when he had ran out of supplies and lost his GPS.
With ‘New Highs Same Lows’ Celly Irez attempts to captures the energy and emotion of The Wasteland, venturing out to the desert itself, and even recording acoustic guitar (Cowboy Lambo’s main melody) and writing entire pieces (Benji) live within the silence of the barren land.
