67 to 70, Celtic where the best club in the world simply because they played the best football, to be the first in Britain to win the European Cup, and with a team of scots was a remarkable achievement by any standards, I don't think even Real Madrid have won it with 11 spaniards in the team

Real Madrid won the 1966 European Cup against Partizan of Belgrade (2-1) with 11 Spanish players, no one foreign, the same as Celtic did in 1967.

@@portorico2319 No, DiStefano was no longer playing in Real Madrid at that time, in 1964 he left Real Madrid to play with R.C.D. Español of Barcelona, he would retire in this club in April 1966. Only one player who had won the previous Real Madrid 5 European Cups played and won the sixth, Paco Gento, so far the player with more European Cup/Champions titles in history.

65-66 semi final cup winners cup ; win European cup 66;67 European cup final 69-70 ; semi-final lost on penalties 71-72 ; semi final 73-74 ; 74-75 Quarter final ; don't think any other British team has a record like that at the time ; for me best British club in Europe at that time

Thankfully justice was done when Bayern scored their late equaliser and smashed the thugs from Madrid 4-1 in the replay. How painful that must have been. I Am pretty sure that Rangers were at home to Bayern, the same night Celtic played Inter Milan. There was 80.000 + at Ibrox, It the Celtic att was 70.000 +. That makes around 150,000 football fans in Glasgow that night. Amazing

Anton Jankovic nope would never have happened the police would put a stop to that the only time they play on the same day is when we play each other at the time 1 of them would have to be played away from home I don't know how old you are but the trouble it would cause is why both can't play in the city on the same day then you have the public to think of too traffic & everything else to think of

Celtic were a mighty team in the late sixties and early seventies, they took on all comers and beat them well. They stuffed a powerful but past its prime Inter in the final, beat the amazing Leeds Utd comprehensively over two legs. What has happened to Celtic nowadays???

It's not Celtic, it's the rest of football that has gone crazy, so that teams from countries like Scotland, Romania, Czech Republic etc now have next to no chance of advancing in Europe whereas their teams used to trip off the tongue back then.

Does anyone remember Rod Stewart drunkenly announcing Atletico as "Team of the Year" on the BBC awards show? (Sports Personality of the year, I think). He screwed up his piece of paper and held it out to Frank Bough to get rid of for him, but Frank maturely ignored him! Not true. Scottish clubs regularly did very well in european competition back then. Besides, you can only beat what's in front of you. That Div 1 in England was tougher overall is not really the point though - it is that Celtic regularly beat the best of the best. By your logic Man City are better than Real Madrid.

Yes, I'm ATletico de Madrid fan, and I admit it, our Argentinian players Ayala & Diaz, and also Paraguay's Benegas had a rough behaviour on the semifinal. And I know you hate Argentinians. Anyway, Celtic couldn't manage to score on that night, so in the 2nd leg Atletico had the bollocks to play real football and smashed Celtic by 2-nil. That's the story, this is it. By the way, Celtic were nothing in Europe from that moment forward, even more when the mighty Dalglish was sold to Liverpool.

How so? Celtic beat "superleeds" home and away. Terry Cooper was never the same player after wee Jimmy Johnstone roasted him. Liverpool were a fantastic team but Leeds, as good as they undoubtedly were, were clearly not as good as Celtic. Celtic appeared in two European Cup finals from 1967-1970 - the 1970 final being lost in extra time. They appeared in two further semi finals from 72-74.

One of the Best nights ever as a Bear, we gubbed nearly the whole German national side to reach ECWC Final and got home in time to see Dixie put His penalty into Orbit, Celtic fans wrecked nearly every Italian owned Ice cream Van, Cafe and chip shop in the East End, as usual terrible losers. that athletico team should have been thrown out of the competition after this game , it was an affront to good play and sportsmanship, managed by an Argentinian who came to do a hatchet job on celtic to get into the final today in 2014 we have a great athletico team with players who are worthy to wear the colours of a great football club celtic don't hold the present club responsible for 1974, we hold the players and the manager responsible, one of the athletico players who was sent off, said when I look back I am ashamed of what we did that night, he did what his manager asked, but to try to win a game by cheating only cheats yourself, because if you don't win fairly you have not won anything, all you have done is lose your self respect as a person

I've never forgiven they animals for what they did to jinky that night I was 8 year old my da got me out my bed & let me watch the highlights I can as LSO remember a day or 2nlater they're was a photo in 1 of my da's papers of jinky with a pair of shorts on & the bruises on his legs looked horrific the animals of Madrid had to play a game behind closed doors & fined if I remember correctly glad to say they lost the final still to this day I want them to be beat in la Liga & europe hh

I am of the same age as you and I too saw that match on the TV, only that I cheered Atletico on. I did not realize back then how roughly Atletico played that match, now I see... Anyway, Atletico is a great team (although I am a Real Madrid supporter) and has been one of the best teams in the Champions in recent years. I wish Celtic can reissue past glories and we can see it some time in the top rounds of the competition.
