@@f0urstr1ngThe Lisbon Lions were not all Catholics, you've just made that up. Ronnie Simpson's dad played for Rangers for one thing, so doubt very much he was Catholic. And famously, nor was Stein. Our achievement was legendary enough without having to make up your own facts to make it seem even better. Not sure if you're a Celtic fan or one of those people from outside Scotland who always blindly assume Celtic = Catholic and Rangers = Protestant, which was only true for the latter.

Compare and contrast the undiluted joy and elation on show here to the reaction of Man City fans to victory in Istanbul, all based on the scale of the achievement. Lisbon was magical because it was against all the odds; Istanbul just happened to be when they finally won it. With all of the financial advantages enjoyed by City, it was just a question of when. For Celtic, with a team of local lads, it was indeed something very special.

im a Celtic man,but Rangers were in the cup winners cup final the same year,sadly they didn't win,because it would have been incredible for Scottish football if both of Europe,s premier trophies were in Glasgow,and the only manager from the English clubs at the Celtic game was Bill Shankley, i miss the days when the game was for the common man and not ruled by money grabbing crooks right across the board,all the best to you.

Fantastic colour quality for 1967. And Lisbon holds the title for the prettiest venue for a European Cup Final ever.. the only final I have seen in broad daylight! As a non Celtic fan I can't deny the romance of this game - Inter were the original low block team who would score early and close the game, nearly impossible to beat.. and in the event of defeat all that Pirelli money would find its way into the ref's pocket! So up against those odds Celtic played a patient game, even when 1-0 down and most teams against Inter would admit defeat - that's when they started playing! Inter had no answer, other than kicking the opposition, and Celtic became the first team north of Iberia to win the European Cup.. the stuff of legend we are still in awe of 55 years later!

I remember watching the match on our wee black and white tv. Played on Thursday 25th May, 5.30pm KO. The whole of Scotland was glued to the tv, the streets were deserted. @FalseTeeth-o4y maybe a easy route to the final, but to say Celtic hot “lucky” in the final is really pathetic. They completely outplayed a great Inter team, and were massively worthy winners. 2-1 flattered them, even their captain Mazzola said they massively under estimated Celtic and as a result deserved to lose. The Lisbon lions will go down amongst the greatest of club sides from these isles.

You refer to me as if I’m a Celtic fan, I’m a match going fan of Manchester City, I just happen to appreciate massively this achievement, and no matter how you try to de value Celtic’s achievements in 1967, your making yourself look pathetic. Show some respect to this fantastic team of local lads who conquered Europe, the first based British club to do so. For any club to win every trophy it entered in one season is amazing, and no amount of dissing from your like will make the slightest difference. 🤡
@ants9230

@FalseTeeth-o4y Is it not possible that they were just a great team? You think that beating the Swiss champions, the French Champions, the Yugoslavian champions who had already eliminated the Spanish champions in the previous round (I guess they were lucky too?), the Czechoslovakian champions who had eliminated the Dutch champions in the previous round (let me guess, they were lucky too?) and then the Italian Champions (who had won the tournament twice before) somehow detracts from the achievement? This was one of the most one sided finals in the history of the tournament. Some other stats from the match; shots on goal 42 - 5, shots on target 24 - 4, corners 10 - 0. Also bear in mind that the Yugoslavian champions were finalists the previous year Not to mention that in the following 5 years, Celtic were runners up, semi finalists and quarter finalists twice. You clearly don't know much about European football in the 1960s. If you did, you would realise that nobody really cares what you think.

A fully home grown team from Scotland who were all born 15 miles away from Celtic park going to Lisbon against that brilliant Inter Milan team who won the competition 2 times back to back in 64 and 65 and beating them this will never be done again. RIP Jock Stein you absolute fucking genius

As the great Scottish journalist Hugh McIlvanney put it, Glasgow Celtic won the European Cup with a Glasgow & District select. It's not like that now, of course, never will be again, but it was truly special.

I'm amazed at the level of Celtic then. They completely squashed Inter! And with good football, and some intelligent play. Many Scottish teams couldn't muster that kind of cleverness level - even today

Younger viewers might want to reflect on how powerful Inter were in the 1960s. Twice winners and seen as invincible. Most neutrals didn't fancy Celtic chances in the final.

57 years later, this is still the only side in the world to win the true Quadruple of top flight domestic league, primary domestic cup, league cup/secondary major domestic cup, and primary continental championship all in the same season. The feat has been possible at one time or another in 97 countries and is still possible in 48 countries. 1989-90 Yokohama F. Marinos and 2019-20 PSG came closest to joining the Lisbon Lions, each completing the domestic treble before losing in their respective continental championship final.
