I think the heart symbol went back to ancient Rome where originally it wasn't a symbol but a picture of a fennel seed that was used as an extremely effective contraceptive, so effective it's seeds were worth more by weight then gold and it's picture was sometimes printed on coins, until it was eventually harvested to extinction. My memory is fuzzy on speculations as to how it evolved as a symbol after or during that but I think it started a s a lust symbol that then evolved as a love symbol that spread to nearby cultures due to the simple and unique shape of it.

The ‘Celtic’ Heart was recently found in Hedeby, Heithabu, an old Viking Town just South of today’s Danish border with Germany. So, maybe a visitor from the British isles, or - the other way around? Cheers
