Julie Fowlis presents no. 1 of a series of Celtic music made at home, featuring musicians playing across the internet from Scotland, Ireland, England, USA and Mexico. Locations given under ‘Show More’ are from where the musicians recorded, which is often not from where they originate.
This episode includes Julie Fowlis and Èamon Doorley (Scotland), Zoe Conway & John McIntyre (Ireland), John McCusker & Mike McGoldrick (England) with John Doyle (in North Carolina, USA) and ‘Rodrigo y Gabriela’ from Mexico playing in various combinations.

To repeat my previous message. Julie and Eamon are treasures to savour. It is a disgrace we are deprived of such sublime music and artists on UK mainstream TV. Instead we have to endure TOTP 1980s on BBC4 which is what is supposed to be the UK's cultural and music station. But never mind Julie. You have the undying admiration and love of those like me who know what a wonderful musician you are and a fantastic credit to our country beautiful bonnie Scotland.

The joys of BBC ALBA. The only TV station in Europe dedicated to the preservation of the wonderful Gaelic languages and sublime music. Julie's intro is just perfect.

Wonderful to listen to and watch! Question, Julie, what is the name of the adjustable drone instrument that you are playing in the first piece?
@iantibbetts22
@iantibbetts22 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jason, it's called a 'Shruti box', an instrument which derives from Indian classical music and plays like a hand harmonium, but with on/off key positioning to pre-select a consistent drone.

@@iantibbetts22 Ian, thank you kindly for your reply. Fascinating instrument. I recall now seeing a Shruti box elsewhere online, and the player used a foot-pump on the box while playing a melody instrument at the same time. One day...

How in the world was the coordination between musicians in different locations managed? I kept looking for any signs of mikes, monitors, headsets, or any way for the players to hear one another. Never saw any till the last set with G&R.Totally mystified.

Not wanting to take away the magic, but the musician(s) in one of the places will create a backing track to which the others record, and send their recorded audio track back to the producer. After mixing, the finished audio track is re-distributed to all the players, and then they film themselves (usually two or three takes from different angles) while 'performing' to that audio track. Not quite as romantic as it looks, but unfortunately you can't do it live over the internet.

@@iantibbetts22 Yes, exactly ... that's how we've been doing those "virtual" sessions here. But in the resulting vid you see folks at least wearing earbuds if not a full headset. You end up with a vid that looks like the final set where Gabriela & Rodrigo are playing along to the track that ( I assume) Julie & Eamon had laid down. Not sure how Zoe & John were able to hear. I see mikes in Julie & Eamon's and Zoe & John's segments, but no headsets. Has some some tech been developed to allow musicians to hear and record without generating feedback?

@@PhillProbst Maybe they had speakers but the video was filmed without sound ?
@iantibbetts22

I would guess the vocals yes, but for the instruments, it would have been tough to "reproduce" an audio track, so maybe the sound of the instruments that you see on the video was the version that you hear live ... but I don't know for sure.

@@iantibbetts22 I think I may have figured it out. Your suggestion that the video was recorded without sound is close to the mark. I noticed a few details that suggest a solution. Gabriela is playing acoustic and so is wearing a headset. Rodrigo is playing electric, no doubt plugged in direct to the board and so can hear the mix on the studio monitors, For the other segments a couple of details tell the tale. (1) Multiple camera angles. (2) Slight mismatch between mouth movements as seen in the vid and vocals as heard. So ... the audio portions were recorded first and the video segments were recorded separately in several takes with the musicians playing along with the prerecorded audio. The the audio & video were then merged in post to produce the final product. My best guess, anyway.

It's 2024 and lockdown is over. These programs will be used in the future to show how people coped during this time and the resilence of the human spirit. Keep safe everyone. Thank you for programs like this. You kept me sane. R.I.P. All those lost to us during this time.
