I remember back in 1990 Sporting Clube de Portugal was in financial ruin. Our stadium was falling apart, we hadn't won a championship since 1982 and the team was in shambles with players forcing the transfer. Futre our academy superstar fled to Porto and Fernando Mendes also an academy player everyone said was going to be our captain fled to Benfica. With Portugal becoming U21 world champion, Sporting decided there the youth had to save the club. Figo, Peixe, Jorge Cadete, were immediately into the first team. It was this generation that prevented the club from worsening its already chaotic situation and set a tradition at the club of calling young players that showed potential. Young players must be given the chance to succeed. Its not easy and the integration must be wisely managed but it is the best way to manage. There would be no Nani or Cristiano Ronaldo without Figo, Capucho, Peixe, Luis Boa Morte, Cadete, and other players that climbed the ranks setting an example and showing young players it is possible. Its possible but ONLY if the club trully invests in the youth.

If you don't take genuine strides to promote youth players and give them significant first team chances they'll all just leave as is happening currently. Really refreshing to see someone lament the lack of youth development in the UK, wish we’d do it more south of the border! That Scottish youngsters can’t come through the elite clubs’ academies hurts the national team too, and all in favour of vastly unknown signings from abroad. Same situation with England 10-20 years ago when the Premier League spent more. And it’s not a great deal better for us now, though I think the tide may turn in 5 years’ time as English coaches improve. And therein lies the key for Scotland - improving Scottish managers who take a keen interest in their national development. This channel is genuinely fresh air, that a fan who supports a club used to winning still wants youth development to occur, Scottish fans are much better than ours.

Lets deal with Mikey Johnston. Injury has nothing to do with him not establishing himself in the first team, it's because of his inability to make the right choices. There have been so many occasions in games where moves have broken down with him, due him losing the ball carelessly or running out of ideas, running into cul de sacs. This has happened far too often! He has been given plenty of opportunities to show that he has what it takes to be a first team regular, and he has always failed! Take the recent Hibs game, here he was given a start. What did he do when he had the ball, virtually nothing! One or two flashes and then allowing moves to break down with him, as they invariably do. It is interesting to note that he has hardly been seen since, even among the subs! In short he is not good enough. He has some skill, but he is essentially, a five a side footballer.

@lancevance58511 ай бұрын
I agree. They definitely do want to exploit it because the players are cheap, which increases the chances of profiting from sales at minimal risk which is Celtics favourite frugal model and as you say they get to build the brand while they do it. They'll sit back and happily take the fans money and smile as the club is embarrassed year after year in whatever european competition they end up in because they're all making money which is all they care about. The best way to develop youth is having an U23 squad that plays in a lower division, so that you have an intermediate step between academy and first team. In Italy we have a couple clubs who do it and my club is also planning it for next year. You can also call the more talented ones and give them a chance but it's not very efficient cause apart from the wonderkids like Yamal,musiala etc. For the rest its gonna be tough to get consistent playing time. Juventus for example has got so many kids out of their u23 like Huijsen,Fagioli,Iling jr, yildiz,etc. So if you want to maximise that it's the way to go, cause in the U23 it will be the perfect enviroment with lots of playing time against lower division professionals.

It’s not possible for clubs like a Celtics or Ajax to even get a chance at young player so it leads to them having to develop local talent. Which is now limits their talent pool hugely. A young Suarez likely skips Ajax and goes to Liverpool. Not like Celtics and pay high wages. They might as well combine Scottish Prem with EPL

I would agree with you. With the amount of money in the game now, the gulf between medium and giant clubs is enormous. I'm a Dortmund fan and our record signing cost €35m... Such is the competition for young players were either priced out (Kotchap, Viega, Simons) or can only keep them for 2 or 3 seasons max (Haaland, Jude, Pulisic). Clubs with billions now dwarf clubs with millions who have very fixed budgets.

This isn't a uniquely Celtic problem, a lot of europe's big clubs are completely unwilling to take the risk and "play the kids". Look at what happened to Barca, they got caught up in superstar signings, lost the "Barca Way", were forced to sell half a dozen financial levers, and let multiple talented youngsters leave. While recently they have given minutes to Yamal, Balde and Gavi (would also list Pedri but he is technically not a Barca academy player, he came through Las Palmas). They let players like Ezzalzoui walk, and never gave chances to Fati after his injury, instead inexplicably shelling out 50m for Ferran Torres, who is objectively worse than him in every conceivable way. And Barca, compared to other clubs, isn't doing that bad with youth. Which is sad. Teams need to be more willing to give youngsters minutes, even if it's just off the bench against weaker teams. Just to see if they have something

We need a reserve league. At celtic if you ain't in the team or on the bench you get zero action that week, no chance to test some youngsters or bring others back from injury

Rangers have tried to start this for years, yet the corrupt celtic minded spfl board always go against it, effectively screwing every scottish team and the national team

Yesterday Olivia Mcstay made her debut from the Academy for Celtic Women, age 15 1/2. Alongside players from USA, China, Spain, France, and Morocco. So it’s not all doom and gloom and there is room for breakthroughs.

How? He's been papped out to league one on loan and is unlikely to make it back into the Brest first team next year so will probably be papped out again.

we would be as well scrapping the youth set up. we dont use it, its just a waste of money currently, and additional heartbreak everytime you see a morrison or doak go to bayern or liverpool.

Scottish young lads don’t get the chance to develope ready made foreign players have been coming in over 30 years now in my day every top club in England had at least 3 Scots in the first side.

Some generally are not good enough , coaches have never been great either , Celtic can’t afford to put a 16 year old on during league games as they always want to win, it’s not worth the risk, over recent years there’s been about 20 have moved abroad or to English clubs
@colinmcmillan5920 Жыл бұрын
So true man wasting talent too often n signing foreign projects which are a hit and a miss look at robertson n hickey they were on celtics books n we lost them they have turned out to be great players Need to sign proper first team players instead of projects and use out own academy players as the project players for the first team only way to give these boys a chance to show what they can do

yeve not spoke about the fact theres a massive jump between youth team. there is no longer a proper reserve league in the SPL as most other first teams will have those players in their first team squad. you havent even offered a solution or reason here. The managers n coaches will decide if they are good enough for our first team or not and give them game time but not ahead of first team players who deserve/need game time or when matches are important which is pretty much all games now. Youve pointed out the obvious once the player gets to the point they need game time against stronger opposition they will leave for a top team elsewhere and play in their reserve league but am not sure what your point is 🤷🏽
@flashbackfootball1367 Жыл бұрын
I made the point several time, give them more of a chance in the matchday squad coming off the bench rather than always signing squad depth options. That in my opinion could be the solution. You get five subs nowadays plenty of opportunity to give the young lads who deserve it the chance to develop. Better use of loans would also be an option. As I mentioned Adam Montgomery who did well at St Johnstone last season and doesn't look any worse than bernabei but was sent off to Fleetwood this year to rot. To me it doesn't make any sense. And, I think it wouldn't be as much of an issue in my opinion if we were still signing Scottish talent from other SPFL teams.
@theretrofrets Жыл бұрын
thats not a solution. theres too big a jump from development stage to first without a reserve league, other league or stronger opposition. the first team is the first team for a reason. we have 25 players that are all good enough to start in SPL and hopefully for european games. Thats why we buy older players from other acadmies now. yeve not spoke about anything like.
@flashbackfootball1367 Жыл бұрын
I disagree, I think if they're good enough they could make the jump in time. And how does buying older players from foreign academies help us to have homegrown players with a connection to the club?
@theretrofrets Жыл бұрын
it doesnt but its the model of the club to make money because we dont have thay middle ground for young players to develop. so you think you know better than the manager/coach about the quality of our youth players?
@flashbackfootball1367 Жыл бұрын
Lol obviously not. I just refuse to believe that they are all complete mince and would just shite themselves in fear and forget how to kick a ball in the face of the might of Livingston, Ross County or st Johnstone as you are suggesting.

Let’s be fair both old firm clubs are producing no Scot’s whatsoever.It’s a joke when they keep buying cheap foreign crap on top of it
@tazp123 Жыл бұрын
The problem is you dont get the right experience being brought on with 20-30 minutes to go... We should be starting the developing players and subbing them off when we are desperate. Imagine a fresh kyogo and hatate coming on at 70 minutes, what game isnt recoverable this way?

You know your academy is bad when Ben Doak has had more first team minutes for my club Liverpool than he ever did at Celtic when we have salah who plays in his position that to me should be Celtics biggest wake up that a player they had is currently getting game time at Liverpool he should be starting for you lot every week

Unless you’re playing in a game involving the top two clubs in Scotland, the atmosphere, crowds and financial rewards are far better even in a top L2 club in England. If you can’t talk English, have got dreadlocks or an X or a V or a Z in your name, my recommendation would be to get out of the top few clubs in Scotland.

Personally think dembele was rushed into the first team which isn't always a good You mention Bayern, Barca a d city playing youngsters the difference between them and doak is they are probably better prospects then doak and that's coming from a liverpool fan plus I'm not saying doak won't be a great player because I think he will be but musiala is one of the best youngsters in the world along with lewis and gavi The problem is youngsters don't want to play in Scotland the lure of the bigger leagues calls to youngster's
