Interesting observations on Smart’s passing woes. I’ve never seen such a streaky passer before. A lot of Celtics fans fail to realize how much this impacted the teams overall identity and continuity on offense. On any given night his passing/playmaking could be anywhere between Trae Young and Pat Beverly

@@Langeta-kun Yeah a lot. That finals against warriors really showed. They don't have a reliable point guard to facilitate and make plays for Tatum and Brown, that's why they had too much turnovers. No one sets them up and settles for an iso then turns to a double then gets stripped over and over.

I think Brogdan is staying cos his trade value sucks. Same with PP, no one wants them. If PP and Brogdan is traded for Caruso, then that's amazing. At this point, Grant will go cos he is limited offensively. Grant has no post game/inside game and only shoots from 3. At least Hauser can cut or slash...slightly bit better.

The emotional attachment that fans had with Smart is the only thing that is making the trade hard to digest, because everybody knows that Porzingis fits much better. His frailty and the sustainability of the productivity that he had last season are still concerns though. Also, I understand that the DW, Brogdon, JB, JT and KP lineup would be very potent on offense, but I’d rather see a balanced approach with Robert Williams instead of Brogdon. Although the offensive output would be lower, the defense should be dominant and generate more transition opportunities, while the offense should still be top 10 in its own right. Hopefully everybody stays healthy and it still remains to be seen who they’ll keep between Brogdon and Grant Williams.

I think an observation missed is Atlanta and Philly torched horford on the pick n roll, while Williams couldn’t space the floor on offense. Now with Porzingis, he is on the best bigs at defending the pick and roll while also being able to space the floor which you’re basically getting a combination of Williams and horford.

U should've seen just how frustrating smart is throughout the years. First four was all about his shooting. Once he fixed that, the frustration turned to his passing and decision making. I always felt this team would thrive more if they kept him as a sixth man. Gonna miss the dude no doubt but I'm also relieved the team won't have to deal with his flaws anymore. He was such a great guy on and off the court and a beast on defense that we fail to see the flaws that were also costing the team a chance to win it all.

Completely agree with coach. One great defensive possesion isn't worth screwing up multiple offensive possessions. Brogdon can actually shoot so defenders will think twice about clogging passing lanes cos Brogdon don't need to pass for Boston to score. Same with White, he also doesnt need to pass for Boston to score, he can create his own shot. This is why I think PP is staying cos as much of a defensive liability PP is, he can actually shoot the ball.

Coach I slightly disagree about your usage of the clip at 2:15 (attempted pass to Brown who is making a baseline cut) when you’re talking about Smart making bounce passes when he shouldn’t because the “defender is in a good position to steal it”. While that clip does end in a steal, I actually think it’s a better example of your earlier point about accuracy and bouncing the ball in the wrong spot. If you slow it down, you can clearly see the ball is only stolen because it bounces directly into the defender’s hand. If he had made the ball bounce farther away, he could definitely have slid it under the defender’s hand but still had it be catchable by Brown’s right hand. I actually think this was a very good, advanced passing read-the kind of pass Jokic makes regularly. I just think the pass itself was too advanced for Smart’s ability to deliver it.

As a celtics fan I can see why they moved off of Smart, as KP opens up so many different forms of offense and can allow Tatum to take his offense to a whole new level. While also taking pressure off JB. However I would have significantly liked to move off of Brogdon as well. He also made many mistakes throughout the season and had the 4th or so lowest FG% around the rim. Not to mention he was always being head hunted in the post season. If we had traded Brogdon I would have viewed this trade as an instant win. As our defense would have finally been fully complete and our offense would have 2 whole new dimensions to it. However since we gave up Smart I have to wait to see Brad’s next move before deciding fully what I think on this trade, but I already view it as win just not as much as the original Brogdon - KP - MM trade package

Coach Nick, it's no secret that you haven't been a huge Smart fan over the years. While I don't disagree with your criticisms of Smart, I think some examples aren't really examples of his flaws. Like the shot against the Heat in game 6. Smart took the shot there because he had a decent look, and in the prior series Tatum went too late at the end of game and Smart couldn't get a shot off in the half second he had. He said in the game 6 post game, he wasn't going to lose another game because of something like that. Also, when you take a shot that quickly, you give yourself a opportunity at a second chance look. I think it's worth noting that Smart has been an awesome end of game player for the Celtics throughout his career, especially in the playoffs. He also has played through many injuries most people wouldn't and still remained an effective player while doing so. Last, I think it should be noted how key the Smart, Tatum two man game has been over the past 3 seasons or so. I think you're slightly off with your praise of Brogdon as well. Malcolm is an awesome play maker out of the pick and roll, a great 3 point shooter, and awesome piece off the bench. However; I don't think you can pencil him in as an end of game guy because he has a tendacy to get horrible tunnel vision. I think anyone who watched the Celtics this year knows that Brogdon occasionally will decide he's just gonna shoot no matter what. The other flaw with Brogdon is his finishing abilities around the rim are really streaky. He has more games than he should where he loses his touch or it just is slightly off for the night. While I do think he's an awesome piece I think you glossed over a few warts. That being said, there's even more places where Smart's absence could be beneficial, starting with his streakiness. Smart game has always been an up and down affair. When you have a gluttony of guards you would think that wouldn't be an issue, but given Smart's importance and history with the team, it sounds like the coaches this season struggled benching him during his down games. Another issue with Smart is his inability to play through a bad whistle. Smart has always had issue with playing with purpose and focus when the officiating starts to skew in favor of the other team. He gets hyper focused on trying to make the refs make the same calls both ways, and it has cost the team meanigful possesions on both ends of the court throughout his career. I think the team has always matched Smart's energy since IT left and these issues have, in the past 2 seasons, plagued the Celtics. I think there's a chance his absence this year could cause that to change.
@jay_ian5828
@jay_ian5828 11 ай бұрын
Moving another guard in Smart was good but considering Brogdon's health, they might need to go after another one. Pritchard is good but he's too small and always gets cooked in PnR. We could use that 2 FRP to get a backup point guard. We're already covered in front court, just need to manage Rob Will's and Porzingis' minutes carefully before postseason.

wanna know how good/important Marcus Smart is? He was traded alone. no second player or picks. Porzingis was happier than ever last season and healthy and gave litterally no indication of second guessing resigning with the wizards. This was awesome for the celtics, sent Smart to a relevant team in regaurds of where he would fit in, and We got, in my opinion, what we needed. An extra center to back up 50% availability in Rob Lob and 56 year old Al Horford...and we got Kristaps Por-effin-zingis. Go Celts!

Tatum and Brown did not run the floor in 2023 like they did the year before. This is the cause of the transition passing woes.

I think Brogdon and White are better decision makers than smart. Not only in passing but in shot selection. Talking about passes tho, he usually passes the ball 1 second too late. I realized while watching the video. He totally disrupts transtions by making kind of a very slow step to be aware of the situation. I get that Celtics fans love him because he's a dog and he would die for the colours, but I don't think he had the level of a starting PG in the league. You just have to look at his shooting % thru his career. He's in love with heavy contested shots. I think Brogdon is more of a willing passer than Smart and a better spot-up shooter. P.D.: I like how Westbrook is above Smart in every single turnover related category you showed up. PG has been selling him the whole summer on his podcast as a the starting point guard the Clippers needed to take a leap. He's standing up for his teammate but he's blind af.

People calling this slander, it isn’t slander it’s just facts. Smart isn’t a good or intelligent offensive player. He has frustrated me as a Celtics fan for so long now. Happy we made this move, but I’m hopping Brad makes another move for a playmaker with those draft picks. Maybe Dejounte Murray or someone of that caliber.

What are we talking about here? After 9 years there's no championship. Would these people want rinse and repeat? And if there was another trade to be made, what trade would that be?
