it is actually an ancient cantacle, that S&G copied and made into a modern song, but it was definitely a much older song , a traditional English Ballad , and the sound itself comes from an even older variant of The Elfin Knight , a ballad from Scotland in the 1600s, S&G just made it accesible to the American market, yet it had been sung previously in the states by John Lomax in 1934,
