Cemetery Strolls, True Story Special #17:
This is a video of the harrowing True Story of the Aberfan Colliery. On the fateful day of 21st October 1966, where most of a town's young Generation was wiped out by a landslide of coal waste. 144 people were killed that day.
Taking out farms, homes & a Primary school full of children on the last day of term. Many of those children & some of their teachers, never made it back home.
I would like to say a MASSIVE THANK YOU MUCHLY to my Wonderful Wife Rakina.
For stepping in to do the Narrating on this one for me.

Wow, firstly may I say thank you muchly for sharing your experience. It's Humbling to have someone comment, who's life was personally affected by that day. I hope the video didn't cause you any distress. I only want to honour the people of Aberfan. Happy Birthday on the 20th Phil. 🍻❤️

Well done with this thoughtful video. I was the same age as many of those who died and I remember it so well. It shocked me and made me realise that children die too, I hadn't thought about that before. I saw on the grainy black and white tv, the miners digging like only miners can to reach the children. I remember seeing the women of the village in their coats and head scarves, just as my Mum wore, passing rocks to each other, doing what they could to help. I remember hearing how Mr Beynon, one of the teachers, was found with five children in his arms where he tried to protect them to the last second. Now, as a man in his mid 60s , I have enjoyed my life while those children had none. I have always wanted to go and pay my respects but felt it might be too intrusive. Maybe next year will be the right time for me. It brings tears to my eyes too, I know just how Kev feels. Pete in Cumbria.

Beautifully put. I was 8 and well remember watching the grainy black and white footage on TV that evening. Have never visited but always felt I should as I have Welsh ancestry and the memory of that day always brings a lump to my throat.

When I found out about this tragedy I asked my grandmother about it. She was from Wales but did not know anyone who was in the tragedy. However, I have never forgotten about this. Something should have been done for all these families.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

😅I was completely overcome with grief when I visited Aberfan in the eighties. I sat in the memorial garden by myself and it was so quiet. Not even a bird sang. I visited the cemetery and that was very emotional. Your video brought back memories of a day filled with tears.

Thank you muchly for you lovely comment. I totally agree with the birds not singing & there always seems a black cloud over the place too. I shed a tear also, seeing the pictures that I've seen for 40 odd years.

I remember this day vividly as it was headlines on the news, one picture showing the lone hand of a child reaching out like a lone white rose. I was 12 at the time and have never forgotten the children or the people of that sad village. Always to be remembered 😢

My wife and I recently visited Aberfan from Australia to pay our respects to the people who perished on that awful day. I had read about it, watched videos about it, but the true horror was not evident until I walked the length of those graves of so many children and adults and read the heart wrenching epitaphs. Towards the end, I found it hard to read through my tears. My heart goes out to all the people of Aberfan. Boed i bawb orffwys mewn heddwch

Well done Mrs Spitfire for your commentary it must have been hard to do and thank you kevin. i was 10 years old at the time and this was the first disaster i remember. My family and i watch the tv till it closed down at midnight and we had breakfast on a tray the following day. But things just got worse for the family's after that .years after the offers from the coal board for a measly £50 for a childs life How those people suffered

Thank you muchly for watching. I thought it important for the story to be retold and the memories of the lost to be honoured. After watching a programme, depicting the tragedy and my wife, who gad never heard the story, yet it was something that always affected me. The picture of Tony, stuck with me, all my life, and to finally visit his place of rest brought me to tears.
