The man who played Trimalchio was not even an actor but a famous Rome restaurant owner and old friend of Fellini. His mournful basset hound eyes were exactly what Fellini wanted. He is superb in the role.

Fellini is a true master of the cinematic arts; he was able to portray in this scene the psychological state of the upper class, who are enmeshed in an addiction to material pleasures to the point where their emotions become dull, as shown in the expressions on their faces.

The entrance of Capucine here in the role of Trifena is a great moment. One of the most memorable roles for this fine actress. The control she has over her movements, gestures and expressions is wonderful.

This scene in the Satyricon was written by Petronius as a criticism. The character of Trimalchio, the one throwing this feast, was a caricature of irrisponsible and obnoxious Nouveau Riche. Trimalchio was born a slave and became free and very wealthy before the events of the play, but instead of using his wealth to acquire education or wisdom he luxuriates in it and throws obscenely lavish feasts. In order to stroke his own ego, Trimalchio holds a mock-funeral for himself so he can see himself being mourned. The horns involved are mistaken for an alarm of a fire and the Vigiles (a mix of police and fire-fighters) kick down the door. The protagonist, Encolpius, is disgusted by this feast and uses the entry of the Vigiles as cover to leave.

God I love how often people either stare blankly at the camera or laugh maniacally for no apparent reason in this classic. My favourite film of all time. Pure aesthetic transcendence.
@Etherdave5 жыл бұрын
When I read Petronius it was pointed out to me that the banquet, although appearing to be composed of exotic foods from outside Rome, is actually all composed of ordinary Roman foods, including sausages, lots of organ meat, poultry, and pork. Trimalchio is a vulgar, unlearned man, but seems to know it, and revels in it, as he is nonetheless one of the wealthiest men in Rome. His banquets are certainly lavish, but they are shams, perfectly complementing the array of sycophants and brown-nosers that surround him. Only his wife dares to speak out against him, and gets gravy in the face for her trouble.

An actual Roman feast would probably seem this strange to us, they wouldn't look like the cleaned-up Hollywood versions we're used to.
@e.jenima7263 Жыл бұрын
Probably not. there makeup would be very Garish in our view because Clear Glass Mirrors were not a thing yet plus they had no knives or forks. Plus they would often Induce Vomiting so they could continue to et since some feasts could go on for days and things like Coffee again were not on the dinner tables yet so drinking a double strong coffee to 'Make Room" was not a option ither. Plus you had the entertainment of Strang deformed people we call freaks of the disabled at such events as well bc. they thought they were magical a common belief even up until the 19'th century.

@@e.jenima7263 That whole thing about Romans vomiting at banquets so they could eat more is a myth. A vomitorium was actually just the name of the passageway leading out of a stadium.

I remember I was a middle school kid and would turn on my TV in the morning before school. And the Pay Per View channel that advertised all PPV movies was showing this clip. The lady historically laughing caused a huge impact on me. I was left both confused and amused.

I'm sure Maestro Fellini took some creative liberties as a filmmaker and artist, but if Roman feasts were as surreal and unusual (to our eyes) as this, I for one would have loved to attend one!

Solebam haec ego puer apud Homerum legere. Nam Sibyllam quidem Cumis ego ipse oculis meis vidi in ampulla pendere, et cum illi pueri dicerent: "Sibilla, ti thelis?", respondebat illa: "apothanin thelo".
