@LadyPrincessDiana6 жыл бұрын
Bendilin I think what Japan wants above all is consistency. If a character or series is first introduced as fun and light-hearted, they want it to remain this way, and same if it's introduced as dark and edgy, which was always Shadow's appeal. Any change from what they are used to is not welcomed at all, unlike what we like in usually like in the West, when things evolve unexpectedly to surprise us.
@SuperLucky76 жыл бұрын
Bendilin You could ask the same about the US seeing as we praised Jak 2 for the drastic change in tone, yet bashed Shadow the Hedgehog for being dark and having guns unlike previous games. At least in Japan's case it makes sense since Jak wasn't that dark before, but Shadow was so the game didn't change anything for him. Also, personally I actually enjoy Shadow the Hedgehog and think it was a pretty good game.
@PedoBearNomsLoli6 жыл бұрын
@Bendilin @Super Lucky 7 But at least with Shadow the Hedgehog, they made an entirely new character to be that edgy and dark character, rather than taking Sonic himself and twisting him into a dark edgelord as if some 10 year old gotten a hold of the character and made an edgy fanfic. Because that's what happened to Jak. Therefore, I can understand the Japanese sentiment since when I played the first game for the first time, I was like 'oh ok this is a light-hearted platformer with an adolescent "mute"'. But then when the 2nd game came around, I was like "whoa... this series just did a complete 180..." And apparently that blew the Western gamers and market's minds.....

Cheerful departure or not, Sony REALLY needs to come back to this franchise, as it seems like the only property they have left that appeals to a cartoon-esque aesthetic (especially now after Crash and Spyro no longer belong to them). If they realise that it doesn't necessarily have to be a "system seller" or a game that has to appease to current gaming "trends", it could do very well.

Virtually none of the developers of the Jak series work at Naughty Dog anymore, looking at the concepts for Jak 4 before ND started work on the Last of Us would turn you off from ever wanting them to continue the series. It had a good run, let it rest.
@littlewrench31566 жыл бұрын
I'm aware of it. Most of the crew left after 3 and X since ND was laying off loads of employees during their time revamping for the PS3. I can't imagine that would have left a good impression for a lot of them. Although, IF they do go back to it, they'd better stick with what it made special in the first place. I don't want another "Cinematic Sony Game that is totally not trying to emulate The Last of Us". I'm sick of it to death. So much wasted potential keeps getting thrown out the window because of this attitude. Here's to hoping that changes.

I agree the darker tone was good, while I completely felt like it came out of nowhere, the shift wasn't bad and it is still a good game. Both the first game and sequel games are good in their own right. It does help if you distance plays between them and compare them both on what they're meant to be not how much Jak 2 and 3 weren't like the first. I kind of wish that they did a sort of prequel/sequel where they go on another adventure between the first game and Jak 2. The jungle and light explorations of the first were really fun and it would've been cool if they could sort out the annoyances in the first such as the not that great control on zoomers and maybe give more levels with the bird. Oh and maybe more fishing games. You only got to do it once and then the fisherman laughs for the rest of the game.

Metroid's a really good one right off the bat, despite being created in Japan and 5 of the games being made there the series has never been a big seller in that country, meanwhile it's often regarded very highly in the West (to the point Nintendo's had some entries developed by Western companies like Retro Studios and MercurySteam).

@Despatche3 жыл бұрын
@@BloodRedFox2008 This isn't true at all. The first three Metroid games sold about as well in Japan as elsewhere, huge considering Japan is just one country about the size of a US state. The first game in particular sold over 1 million in Japan alone, and was studied hard by basically every video game developer for years. This is a myth from the same people who brought you "F-Zero GX didn't sell that well" (GX sold about as well as X did, roughly a million and a half copies). The truth is that Metroid generally sold less game after game *anywhere*, which is especially shocking in the case of Super Metroid because it released at such a great time.
@Despatche3 жыл бұрын
@@Lugbzurg This is pretty mixed up. The original Sonic games were very cutesy. The Mega Drive in Japan was always seen as a niche thing that could not really compete with the SNES, despite the majority of Mega Drive games being made in Japan instead of in the US or Europe (though EA sure tried). Even the PC Engine outsold it there. Instead, the decidely less cutesy Sonic Adventure games sold quite a bit better in Japan than the old Mega Drive games did. It's not clear why, but it almost certainly has to do with Sonic Adventure tapping into the same "street" aesthetic that was a big deal back then. And so you see Sega often appealing to Sonic Adventure specifically when they market Sonic stuff in Japan, particularly for anniversaries and such. Funny enough, Jak II/3 tap into a somewhat similar aesthetic, and there's really no good reason why Jak II didn't do well in Japan.
@dylansurendranath30913 жыл бұрын
Another good example of such a game is Demon's Souls, the game that started off the Souls series. Its original Japanese release did not sell very well, due to the brutal and punishing difficulty not gelling well with the Japanese crowd. Therefore, Sony refused to have it be released in the West as a result. However, people in the West had discovered Demon's Souls through word of mouth, about how "refreshingly punishing" it was, some even going so far as to find ways to play an emulation of the Japanese version. FromSoftware, the developer behind Demon's Souls had noticed this turn of events as well, however they knew that Sony owned the rights to Demon's Souls. In order to release Demon's Souls to Western audiences, they partnered up with the publisher Namco Bandai, which pretty much gave birth to its spiritual successor, Dark Souls. And thats how the entire Souls series became available to us! I know that's a lot of information I just talked about, but it is a strong example of a game that is beloved by Western gamers but shunned by Japanese gamers.

Not enough info. The reason Jak 2 sold poorly might have had nothing to do with the tone-shift. Shifts like these are very common in Japanese games (Tales games do this every time). More likely there was simply too much competition at the time (the Japanese gaming market was way more saturated with new games, many of which were only released in Japan, than the Western market was). Alternatively it could be that the first series didn't do enough to make people want a sequel. Some people probably didn't like the censorship in the Japanese version. Maybe the cover wasn't good. I never asked for an industrial atmosphere full of guns and excessive violence, and it's not what I wanted from a Jak and Daxter sequel. There were certain things I really loved about them (the Dark and Light Eco powers are awesome!) but ultimately they leave me feeling empty compared to playing the original Jak and Daxter. I hope one day they are able to reboot this series and take it in a direction that is more fitting with the original. @Isa the Rebel If I'm heavily involved then I can tell you that the atmospheres will not change. Any full on reboots would only enhance the key plot points and atmospheres of the game while introducing and refining more mechanics for travel and fighting. This should be the approach for any serious developer but of course there's external things that could always shift thing around like rules, money, politics, or voice actor availability. I personally want to avoid those factors as much as possible
@Jay-LT_5132 жыл бұрын
@@zaizen4359 Yea I would find it very difficult to even improve the temple in level design, it's definitely one of my favorites too. Well in a reboot or just mod added missions I have ideas on expeditions.. Jak is an adventurous Hero at his core after all. This would give environmental variety and give Jak 1 fans a good way of having that style without taking away from the other. If you ever look at the map of Haven city from the large power lines of Barans palace then you'll see that there's actually a lot of forest land with precursor sites and then snowy mountains. I also would then get the chance for enemy variety and an excuse to introduce more boss Battles.. I really love them. Perhaps Monster Hunter World will inspire this singe it sounds like I'm describing it. Have you played that?

I feel like the direction the series was a bit unnecessary, but I liked it. With that being said, the gameplay has a lot of potential but needs some improvement. This is a case where the devs did good in not giving a shit for the Japanese market and focused on US (or more). Sometimes a market is way to niche to adapt to and you can't blame yourself. Japan I know also has a problem with Korean based characters or plots such as mangas written in Japanese but made by a Korean not developing further than a manga. They have very specific standards and its not worth it making a generic product just for one island of a country.

I wasn't even aware that this franchise had so many entries, I remember playing the first game and... that's it, I did know some people that played it and nothing after it too... I live in Spain and I pretty much never heard of any after the original aside of the Daxter solo game. I don't know how sales did over here but I'd say the awareness was greatly lowered starting on the second game.

The way how the Japanese censorship towards how you can no longer kill the civilians is quite a bit more amusing when you remember Megaman Legends. In the Japanese version, you cam more or less kick dogs to death. But in the US version, if you try to kick them, they will only react once, and you can't make them drop to the ground at all.

Jak's goatee was removed in the Japanese version because the Japanese have a disliking towards facial hair. They see it as dirty and the person as lazy and it's actually harder to get a job if you have facial hair in Japan.
@sykeraid49446 жыл бұрын
'Tis a shame since so many figures that are revered in Japanese culture (Emperors, samurai, even deities) are given facial hair. Even when Japan westernized in the late 19th century, many men adopted facial hair styles mirroring that of westerners (Emperor Meiji for example). Problem was that when facial hair declined in style with the West so too that it declined in Japan. And with facial hair becoming popular again in the West, it isn't gaining track in the East. And I'm going to make a wild guess and say that East Asians are attracted to femininity, whether male or female; if a guy can look more like a chick, the hotter he is.

I myself would've liked the ability to at least enable via toggle or cheat civilian invulnerability in Jak II & III. I've yet to play the games for myself, but when spectating my oldest friend playing the trilogy back in the PS2's heyday (Along with a whole collection of the console's classics), I found it so juxtaposing that the goal of the game was to join the underground & save the city, but it was almost unavoidable to kill it's civilians during gameplay especially during the more challenging vehicle time trials. Don't get me wrong, I did not find the overall change from Jak & Daxter to Jak II unappealing, but that one tid-bit struck me as a bit too much (Plus I never really got why they stopped calling the franchise "Jak 'n' Daxter"). Besides, decking civilians Deus Ex: Human Revolution style has it's fun!

Jak and Daxter is one of my Favorite Video Games Duo, Series, and Fantasy Adventure Game, and I hope they make a Official Fourth Jak and Daxter 4 or a Game about Mar/Jak as a Prequel Game that sets up Jak 2. From Marcus a Friend and Fsn
@Jay-LT_5132 жыл бұрын
You want a Mar game that's before 2? So in the 300 year time skip because Mar was prominent 200 years ago.. that's how old the city is and he built it.. after that his bloodline ruled until the recent years of Jak 2 where Baron Praxis took over. Given young Jaks age this would have to be at most 5-ish years before the events of Jak 2, hell it's very possible that it was just before Jak landed in Haven city. It would explain why they were in such high performance and ready to arrest Jak suddenly
@marcuso49342 жыл бұрын
@@Jay-LT_513 a game featuring Mar as a character would be an awesome game if you consider the the beginning of the second game shows a Metal Head invasion. I still hate the series tone shift to this day. If they wanted to go darker without alienating the fan-base, they should have made 2 a title that slowly introduced the more "edgy" elements to the series.

What if they remade the first game nowadays and did that? Introduce a bow and/or a primitive gun and have a few deep story parts like maybe how Dark eco warped Gol and Mia minds. Then do Jak 2 Hope you answer even though this is years old

@@Jay-LT_513 I probably would have been more fine with the tone shift if they did it like that back in the day, could have even had the climax of the 2nd game have Jak sent into the setting of 2 and realizing before the final fight that there was no way back. Why change something that was good and was working? Nintendo gets this. You keep the character the same and with the same charm and simply make new gameplay and worlds around it. There is a psychological connection between the people and the characters, Japanese are wiser.
@ignacio64542 жыл бұрын
@LEO&LAMB Actually now I completely finished Jack 2 and I think it was INCREDIBLE, a really good game. Still I would like that Sony could give us the old innocent Jack and make games around him. And the same with the older Jack. I guess the point I was trying to make in the original post is that when you make a character progress so much, grow, change, age, etc. You are bound to lose the ability to make new games for that character. Instead Nintendo were intelligent in making Mario ageless and unchangeable, and by that they can continue making games forever about Mario if they want. Cheers then.

I think he was using emulation, which explains why not everything was perfectly rendered, like the shadows. The Lost Frontier is a game you should stay away from. It loses a lot of what makes the original games so great. You lose the comfortable movement and controls, the variety, the interesting characters, the high framerate, the seamlessness of progression, and the polished level design in favor of linearity, stiff movement, flight segments that take too long, and tons and tons of weird and lazy gimmicks as their idea of variety.
